The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has signed on to voice the title character in Legendary's upcoming live-action adaptation of the Pokémon video game, Detective Pikachu.
He'll headline a cast that already features up-and-comers Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Supernatural).
Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is helming the big-budget feature with a script from Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) and Nicole Perlman (Captain Marvel; Guardians of the Galaxy). Filming is expected to begin mid-January in London. Also, Reynolds' role is being described as "motion capture in nature," but whether or not he's actually the one in the mo-cap suit is yet-to-be-seen.
Plot details remain under lock-and-key, but the story is said to pick up when the father of Smith's character is kidnapped. His disappearance will force the young adult to seek out Pikachu's help in finding him and solving an even bigger mystery. Newton will portray a sassy journalist that will help the duo in their quest.
