SHANG-CHI Director Destin Daniel Cretton Will Helm Lionsgate's Live-Action NARUTO Movie

Destin Daniel Cretton made waves with the underappreciated MCU pic Shang-Chi, and he's now signed on to helm a live-action adaptation of Naruto, one of the biggest mangas in the world.

Although there has long been talk of a live-action Naruto film, the announcement that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has joined the production feels like a significant step toward the project's actual realization.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Cretton will be writing the screenplay for the Lionsgate-set movie in addition to directing it.  Tasha Huo wrote a previous draft of the script.

At one point, Cretton was in line to direct Avengers 5, back when the pic was still subtitled The Kang Dynasty. He's since departed the project but is still attached to direct a Shang-Chi sequel.

Currently, Cretton is working on another MCU project, the Disney+ Wonder Man series, which stars Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.  Cretton is spearheading development on the 10-episode Marvel Spotlight series alongside  Andrew Guest (Hawkeye). It's thought that Cretton will also direct several episodes.

Principal photography on Wonder Man began on  April 5, 2023, but was halted over the summer by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Filming resumed in January and seemingly remains ongoing although the production was marred by the tragedy of a rigger falling to their death earlier this month.

The release dates for the Naruto movie and the Shang-Chi sequel are both unknown at this point, so it's unclear which one Cretton will tackle first after Wonder Man.

In a press release, Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto gave his blessing for the project. "When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process."

First published in 1999 in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, Kishimoto wrapped up his fan-favorite series in 2014 after 72 volumes that collect 700 individual chapters (think comic book issues).

A successful anime adaptation was launched by Studio Pierrot in 2002.

After concluding the original manga, a sequel series following Naruto's son, titled Boruto: Naruto Next Generations was launched in 2016 by the assistants who worked on Naruto with Kishimoto. However, Kishimoto would eventually take over the sequel in 2020 amid declining sales.

Currently, the original Naruto manga is the 6th best-selling manga title of all-time with over 250 million volumes sold worldwide.

Hard to even imagine what this will look like, this will have the most pressure of any live action anime adaptation ever. I hope they can do something cool

I have no stakes in Naruto as a franchise, but I guess good for him for being able to jump straight to a new big profile project after losing another.

@FinnishDude - yeah

I guess this does delay Shang Chi 2 further which is a bummer since the first is one of my favorite recent MCU projects but oh well.

This is going to be so bad. Some animations don't need a live-action treatment.

Anime + manga + live action = failure.

@RegularPoochie -

The article and my point was they are making a theater movie, not a niche TV show. When that succeeds, let me know.

@DocSpock - there many good live action anime/manga adaptations. Both the Rurouni Kenshin series and Alita show anime can be done in live action. One Piece isn’t some niche product. It sells more than supermen and Batman I bet. Also the show is one of the top shows on Netflix.

@TheSuperMex -

again, talking about a TV show. This article is about anime/manga being made into a theatrical movie.

Though the people who love it don't think so, it is a niche thing. The larger general movie going audience doesn't know much about or care about anime/manga.

If they turn this into a movie released in the USA that is a big hit, I will admit I was wrong. But that is NOT going to happen.

@DocSpock - I like how you ignore Alita and Rurouni Kenshin.

@RegularPoochie - in fairness I think the one piece live action series is vastly overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's easily the best attempt at a live action anime adaptation. But it's still an objective downgrade from the anime. And the only reason I'd recommend the live action series over the anime is due to time commitment.

@DocSpock - doesn't mean shit if it's a movie or tv show imo

@Origame - also of course anime and manga will always be better🤷‍♂️
Origame

@RegularPoochie - yeah, but if it's always gonna be better then what's the point of basically frame by frame adaptations?

It's not even like they're doing the American superhero approach of using the stories as a guide for original stories. Literally the first season of one piece was just the intro to all the main characters followed by the first arc near beat for beat.

@Origame - also fair, but they wanted to see wha reception is wich I also understand.

Damn , that’s actually a good choice!!.

He can handle the emotion , characters & action (especially if he gets the Shang Chi crew for it) so I’m excited.

Hope it turns out well.
