With over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, 2018's Aquaman is easily the DC Extended Universe's most successful release. As a result, it's no great surprise that a sequel has been in development since almost the second the first instalment made such a splash, and we now have an update directly from the King of Atlantis himself.

Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show to talk up his water company Mananalu Pure Water, Jason Momoa confirmed that he wrote Aquaman 2's story treatment before director James Wan and writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick expanded on those ideas and penned the screenplay.

"After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea and the best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it," Momoa teased. "And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off and all of our hearts are in it."

"Instead of just like getting a script and doing that like you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers so that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there."

As for when work begins on the sequel, the actor added: "I leave in July and we start filming."

Very little is known about the plot of Aquaman 2, though it's expected that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will take centre stage as the villainous Black Manta. Orm is also likely to factor into the story in some capacity, and we'd be surprised if the movie doesn't add at least one new bad guy.

I’d like to see Orm trying to live life on the surface.

Going to the super market...bowling...rushing him in time for Dancing with Stars.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - He just came up with the initial treatment, and that Wan and his writer took over and honed it. I'm hopeful; Wan's one of those directors that I just trust implicitly.

@MUTO123 - Yeah it gives me hope that James and his writer have responded well to his pitch.

Weird…

First one was a visual feast but one of the stupider cbms ever when it came to plot and script.

I would've said there's no way the story for Aquaman 2 could be worse than the first one

I was wrong

Given that Jason Momoa is a 5 year old hyperactive child trapped in an adult body I'm guessing his treatment went something like this...

"...and then I come in riding a giant shark and it shoots laser beams from its eyes and then the bad guys explode and then I jump on a giant whale and it flips out of the water and I ride on its back while it surfs a wave onto a beach and people are like clapping and cheering and the bad guys run away because I punched them so hard..."

Something like that anyways LOL :-)

I hope that means we're getting more Temuera Morrison then, considering how big of a fan Mamoa appears to be of him.

Also, sequels where the lead is a co-writer (Ant-Man and the Wasp, Deadpool 2) tend to be goofier in my opinion, so wonder if this one fits the trend.

The first was so close to being good. The cast was having by fun, production design was great, and action entertaining. It was just such an overstuffed, poorly scripted movie. Hopefully they can get the script in order on this one. This franchise does have potential
