Too bad the mystery of the alien race has come to close once the film was premiered. And even though we know they are the Chitauri, I still think it will go down as one of the best kept secrets in Hollywood.

As part of Marvel Minimates Series 45, a 2-inch minifigure of Loki’s Army Footsoldier will come out in early May as part of a two-pack with Maria Hill. And be on the lookout for a rare variant set, which will pair the Footsoldier with his even more intimidating General! Then, in July, look for the 7-inch Marvel Select figure of the Footsoldier to hit stores, along with a bridge battle display base that connects to Hawkeye’s display base, forming a larger battle scene! These Loki’s Army Minimates and Marvel Selects are only available in comic shops and specialty stores. - artasylum.com

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig), the film releases worldwide May 4, 2012!

Is there really a difference between the footsoldier and general? I mean, does this have any impact in the film? Just curious

Before anyone says they don't look like the Chitauri let me explain.

No one has ever seen the Chitauri in their real form. This could be another form they made themselves or it could be their true form. Who knows so stop complaining. They look cool so it's not a big thing. :)

Talk about a buzz-kill choice for a Marvel alien race. The "who"? Really? Why not just call them the bullarfnians from the planet Snarx?

Underwhelming.

Damn it did you really have to put the name in the article? I mean yes I already spoiled myself, but without spoiler tags in the headline, those who don't want spoilers might be pissed...

As in those who want to still look at the pictures of the army without being spoiled... like back when no one knew.

Chitauri is just another word for "Skrull",so it's the skrulls, and at the same time they aren't :P
FOX owns the skrulls I think,you know,rights and sh*t.

Yeah, why do they keep calling them Loki's Army and not Chitauri? It's not a secret anymore.

So its still not a secret for those who deliberately avoid heavy spoiler articles to still speculate and are waiting to see the movie?

@rockerdude:
This is from the Marvel database, may explain?

The Chitauri were able to mimic human form and absorb human knowledge, apparently by ingesting the bodies or brains of the humans they imitated. In their natural form, they appear to be large, and reptilian, but no clear images of their native form have been shown. Although the drone workers were nearly mindless and not much more durable than humans, the high-ranking officers such as Kleiser possessed super-strength to rival Captain America, superhuman stamina and durability, extremely rapid regeneration, and the ability to see or sense invisible objects or people.

But for marketing purposes, don't you want to be more specific and say that these are the Chitauri and not just Loki's Army?

If you don't like spoilers, you're on the wrong site. The aliens being the Chitauri has been known since this past weekend. Here's another one for ya': Darth Vader is Luke's father.

Got this right from the Marvel comics site.
I didn't know what they were so I needed to find out (yes I'm a recent convert from DC).

Earth-1610's counterpart to the Skrulls, the Chitauri are a shapeshifting alien species who have attempted to conquer the Earth, most notably during World War II and again in the early 21st century.

The Chitauri claim to be part of "the immune system of the Universe", wiping out disorder and free will wherever they find it. They seem to prefer to act behind the scenes, mimicking and influencing the social and military methods of the species they are currently infiltrating. For example, they aided the Nazis in their attempt at world conquest by providing them with the technology to create a nuclear bomb carried by an intercontinental ballistic missile. However, this attempt was thwarted by the prototype super-soldier codenamed Captain America. Through the entire conflict of World War II, the Chitauri were being driven out of their operations in Africa and Europe. And even from their main Japanese training camps in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Following the end of the war, the Chitauri withdrew to make new plans.

Hope this helps people new to the whole Marvel Universe thing.

The regular 616 Skrulls were later introduced into the Ultimate Universe. It's something like they are mad that the Chitauri used their race's name and think of the Chitauri as terrorists. So basically, the Chitauri and Skrulls are two separate races, even in the Ultimate Universe.
