AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Say Hawkeye's Story Arc In The Movie Is "A Long Play"

There's been a lot of talk about why Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye has been missing from the Avengers: Infinity War trailers and posters but the Russo Brothers have now offered another explanation for that...

Avengers: Infinity War is a huge movie so it seems fans will have to accept that not every single of their favourite heroes will get a significant amount of screentime. In the case of Hawkeye, however, there's been no sign of Jeremy Renner's founding Avenger and a lot of people have taken exception to that.

We know that he'll be in Avengers 4 as set photos have confirmed that's the case but what about this first instalment? Is it possible that he won't even make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War?

During a recent interview, Joe and Anthony Russo were asked what the deal with Hawkeye is and the former made it clear that he will have something to do here. "We keep saying, 'Patience is a virtue.' We did not forget the twice-nominated Jeremy Renner. We cooked up a story for him that is a little bit of a long play. Not a short play." Anthony then echoed those remarks promising, "All will be revealed." The question for all of us now is, what exactly could the filmmakers be referring to?

We don't know but it seems as if they definitely have something important in store for Hawkeye; we'll just have to be patient and wait and see what it is and whether it will satisfy the hero's many fans.

He was seen wearing Ronin leggings and a Ronin black coat, so it's safe to say he will probably have some sort of covert mission, we'll see Ronin infiltrate some secret facility to steal some intel or something like that, then it will be revealed it's Clint, which will be a good twist for non-comic fans, and great fan service for us. I could even see Widow going after him, them fighting, Natalia realizing it's him, letting him escape, something like that.

@Asturgis - I think the Black Widow vs Hawkeye fight thing has been done enough now? Agree with the fan service/non comic points but i 'd prefer his journey or infinity stone related journey be something of great importance

Asturgis - 4/12/2018, 2:37 AM
@OptimusGrime - It was just an example. It doesn't have to be Natalia. I just would enjoy a scene where he's seen as the enemy, is on a secret mission given to him by Cap, for example, requiring a different identity so he wouldn't be associated with the Avengers, and then the audience realizes who he is when the good guys try to stop him and fail.

@Asturgis - and a full sleeve tattoo. It's safe to say that Hawkeye that we know is a skrill. Ain't no one getting a full sleeve while thanos attacking.

Or it's a multiverse version

@Asturgis - I have heard that when IW picks up, Clint is off in Japan fighting crime as Ronin. Idk how true that is, but I have heard it form people in the film industry and read it online in leaks.

@Vigor @nebula
EXACTLY.
as I see it there are only a few options here... which makes more sense?
1. Hawkeye got a full tattoo, haircut and new outfit while thanos was attacking and then comes back to fight more stylish during A4?
2. Ronin is the real hawkeye and the other hawk is a skrull
3. Its a hawkeye from a multiverse

@PBIRD - I say again
Vigor
Vigor - 4/12/2018, 11:39 AM
@PBIRD @nebula - what would make it even crazier is if ronin hawkeye (who is the real one) has an entirely different personality more in line with the comics version while faux hawkeye is the one we have become familiar with.

Really flex renners acting chops

@Vigor - I love it when actors play two characters in the same movie with widely different personalities. For instance... FACEOFF.

Nicholas cage playing John Travolta trying to play Nicholas cage.

Renner filmed for at least a couple of months, but the vast majority of that was after they wrapped on Infinity War and he has said in an interview that he is mainly in Avengers 4. They did cut his hair earlier on though, so I think he will make at least one appearance in Infinity War with his his new hairdo. Also, Renner seems happy with the role which must mean he gets some proper character development - that is his thing, especially if the character is dark and conflicted. I also think the Russos wanted to do something good with the character, since they have said Hawkeye is a family favourite and the reference to Renner's oscar nominations acknowledges that his talents have been underused.

Ive got to be honestly, while admittedly I haven't read much of him in the comics, I don't care about Hawkeye in the films.

It's nothing against the actors performance in the films or the story they have given him, I just think his character is somewhat pointless when Widow fills the "secret agent spy" role in the team.

I would much rather screen time go towards characters like Wanda and Vision. They themselves are unique power set wise to the avengers and that can lead to unique stories such as them attempting to control and/or contain the power they possess

Origame - 4/12/2018, 3:15 AM
@StormXmen123 - I know right? And they didn't even really develop him other than being like "he has a family". And even that little we only got for the second Avengers movie. Not to mention his introduction was as "guy with bow and arrow" when we were watching a Thor movie.
Ronan3Accuser
Ronan3Accuser - 4/12/2018, 3:17 AM
@StormXmen123 - while I understand where you are coming from. They still need to have non-powered humans in this universe on the team. It is so people still connect with humanity and not worry that these superheroes/villains are always trying to destroy the world.
Justier5boyo
Justier5boyo - 4/12/2018, 3:18 AM
@StormXmen123 - Thankfully the Russos and the writers don't give a shit about who you think screentime should go to eh? Especially when they are much more capable of crafting "unique" stories without having to regulate it to "who has a higher powerlevel" nonsense. Get ready to sit through a Hawkeye story arc completely helpless. Perhaps whine about it to the russos afterwards? Either sucks for you.

SecretWarrior
SecretWarrior - 4/12/2018, 4:06 AM
@StormXmen123 - I'm just going to go ahead and say that all three characters have not been given enough screen time to establish their characters. I guess it's because RDJ and others need more screen time which makes other screen time suffer (still love ya RDJ!).

That being said, I do still feel what little screen time they have is very good and used effectively. Or as effectively as it can under the circumstances.

I particularly like how Hawkeye keeps popping up as a mentor figure/ life coach for Wanda. It also maximizes their screen time because they both get screen time because their in the same scene

Idk, it reminds me of the “Why isn’t Superman on the Justice League posters?” thing. I mean, just put him on the poster, we know he’s in the movie, what could it possibly spoil?

@TerryTerrapin - That doesn’t make sense, especially in this day and age. Might as well not put anybody on the poster then. It’s legitimately the worst kept secret, especially when they’re going around telling people he’s in it anyways.

I’m just saying, it’s a poster with super heroes in dramatic poses. Just put the guy on it and call it a day.

@newhire13 - Maybe because he is not in Infinity War or just in one small scene at the end or a post-credit scene
Deonox
Deonox - 4/12/2018, 6:21 AM
@newhire13 - To be fair he might only have a cameo. Maybe he only suits up as Ronin. Maybe he does die and the set pics are from the multiverse, who knows. But until we see the movie, we can't make that call
