Marvel and IMAX have released a new featurette celebrating 10 years of bringing "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" to life on the big screen.

The video takes a look back at all the MCU films that have thrilled fans worldwide for the past decade. From Iron Man to Black Panther, some of the franchise's biggest names talk about all the epic superhero battles and adventures that have kept fans begging for more.

Next month, the partnership between Marvel and IMAX will up the ante with the release of Avengers: Infinity War. Ten years in the making, worlds collide as the heroes of the MCU face off against Thanos and his Black Order. Infinity War will mark the first Hollywood film shot entirely using IMAX cameras. This means the audience will be immersed in the action like never before.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo designed Avengers: Infinity War for IMAX. In addition to it being filmed entirely using IMAX cameras, the movie will be presented in IMAX’s expanded 1.9:1 aspect ratio. Only in IMAX theaters will the movie expand vertically to show up to 26% more of the image than standard theaters – providing IMAX fans with even greater scope and immersion.

Fans can experience Avengers: Infinity War in IMAX theaters on April 27th.

Isn't Dolby Cinema supposed to be better then IMAX

@Porkyporg - in my opinion, it is. But that's just me, popular opinion is that IMAX is better.

@Porkyporg - some feel it is cause you get the recliner seats, but the screen is just as big but I'd say the surround sound is better in Dolby

@QUITEMASSIVE -

where I live we have both Dolby & Imax
the recliner seats and the surround sound on Dolby are good on Dolby theaters
BUT
Atmos DFX Theaters
are the best thing I have ever experienced
even the screens are a lot bigger than Imax
recliner seats ?
that's a bonus !

You're quite right about that. In terms of picture quality, Dolby Cinema is in fact the best way to see a movie over any other format right now, because of the fact that they project HDR images with their dual laser 4K projectors. This allows you to see brighter, vibrant, colourful and lifelike imagery with great contrast levels. It's even great for 3D viewing as the projectors drastically negate the dimming effect you'd experience when you put on 3D glasses, if you were to watch a 3D film on standard screenings.

The only other format that come would close to Dolby CInema would be the IMAX Laser format, as it too uses similar projection technology with dual 4K laser projectors that project HDR imagery. They'd both actually be neck and neck, with Dolby slightly edging it out based on technical data. But that sort of varies depending on the venue, so they both may end up looking similar. Standard IMAX Digital venues have what are called: Xenon projectors, which are dual 2K projectors, but aren't as good as what Dolby Cinema and IMAX Laser has.

In terms of audio, Dolby Cinema still beats it all out with their Dolby Atmos sound system. However, IMAX Laser venues have introduced a new 12 channel sound system that's even better than what's already in place for all other standard IMAX digital venues.

Now, if you do decide on going to a Dolby Cinema screening, for this movie, over an IMAX screening, one thing you will be missing out on is the aspect ratio that will be expanded exclusively for all IMAX screenings. The aspect ratio this movie was shot in was 1.90:1. However, only IMAX screenings will present the entire movie that way. Whereas elsewhere (including Dolby) will show the film in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Which basically means you'll lose out on seeing more of the top and bottom portions of the movie that were shot, as they'll be cropped out and letterboxed with black bars - akin to how the trailer looks.

Here's a comparison of how this movie will look in terms of aspect ratio, between the IMAX and standard version:

Standard:

IMAX:

Personally, I'd seek out the nearest IMAX with Laser venue. Also, you may even get lucky as one of them might have a really massive screen.

okay I'm sorry, but I'm just not getting on board with the whole IMAX thing. Is this not just actually going BACKWARDS for us? Why are we essentially reverting back to the almost square-like set up of like an old fashioned CRT television screen? What's great and special about film is the wide ratio. Because our natural field of vision for humans lends itself to a predominantly vertical structure.

The IMAX set up may be really really big, yeah, but it's still basically like a TV screen, no... ? I just don't get it. (though I am more than happy to be thoroughly schooled if that's what's out there to happen. I always welcome new and helpful information)
