AVENGERS: ENDGAME Director On Possibly Helming A DC Movie; Reaffirms Desire For A SECRET WARS Film

Now that the Russo Brothers are just about done with Avengers: Endgame, questions regarding their next project have begun to arise. Will it be a DC movie, or their dream project of The Secret Wars?

For over a year now, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have talked about their dream project of helming a Secret Wars movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the directors have previously indicated they will take a break from the superhero universe following Avengers: Endgame, Joe Russo reaffirmed that it would be the Secret Wars to draw them back to the MCU.

"I keep saying Secret Wars, cause that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid, was Secret Wars," Joe Russo said when asked by MTV News. "This notion of like, you know, event storytelling, and I think that’s part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films. The notion that like you can contain so many different characters, and so many different points of view, and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us."

As the directors have pointed out numerous times in the past, now that Disney has acquired Fox and the X-Men and Fantastic Four are back with Marvel Studios, a Secret Wars movie is entirely possible. However, given how far down the line Marvel plans these movies, this sort of ensemble blockbuster might not come to fruition for quite some time. If it did, though, you can bet it would be a way bigger cinematic event than anything we've seen in the MCU thus far. This would be a monumental undertaking, but if there are any directors who have proven capable of managing ensemble movies, it's the Russo brothers.

Beyond the MCU, the directors were asked if they would ever consider helming a DC Universe film. While they didn't jump at the idea of entering the ring with DC, they didn't exactly rule it out either.

"I mean, our brains are so fogged at this point that I don't know we can consider anything," Joe responded. "But, you know, you never say, 'never.'"

One Marvel director who didn't say no is James Gunn, who will be directing Suicide Squad. Gunn agreed to helm the DC film after he was let go by Disney for some inappropriate tweets that resurfaced online; however, realizing there was no one better visionary for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney and Marvel Studios recently announced that they would be bringing Gunn back on board. As a result, Gunn is now directing both Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Would I totally be down with the Russos returning to the MCU for a Secret Wars film?? Freaking YES!!

With regards to the Russos doing a DC film, I highly doubt it. A lot of the stuff the Russos have publicly said they love about working at Marvel just doesn't really exist much if at all currently in the DCEU.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Also considering that before the merger they had been in talks with Fox to finance their production company (even though it fell through a couple months later) I think they stay in the Disney family and we hear about that deal being finalized for them to work on other stuff through Fox until they are ready for more MCU goodness.

@LongMayHeReign - that's a good point too bro.

I don't think that the Russos would say no to doing a movie for Warner Bros; WB has put out plenty of great films. But I just don't see the DCEU being a good fit for them.

@HeavyMetal4Life - if DC would give the Russo's Feige level control I'd be up for it. but DC seem to think they know what fans want more than the fans or directors so prolly not gonna happen. DC's latest efforts much better but still got a long way to go. I could only imagine a Russo's justice League, Flashpoint, GL Corps, etc tho. Oh the beauty!!

@SuperManes - agree with a lot of what you said there

@SuperManes - It's DC having no leader guiding any of this correctly, and WB being run by idiots calling the shots. I'll be the first to say, outside of Batman, I don't care much for the DC comics side. IF the Russo's ever got to do a Batman, that be cool...other than that, fuk WB as they are a train wreck and will never get a real dc universe moving. All of these one offs like Wonder Woman, Aqua, and Shazam are decent movies, but are not world building much at all. It's more we'll throw this in there to reference, just in case we can actually make this work. Same ole disorganized shit, different day with wb.

@HeavyMetal4Life -
Phase 4
The story involves a subversive, long-term invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, a group of alien shapeshifters who have secretly replaced many superheroes in the Marvel Universe with impostors over a period of years

'Secret Invasion' would be Avengers 5 - with the characters who were replaced by a Skrull appearing in Captain Marvel; 'Secret Wars' which is where they were during the events of Secret Invasion.

Phase 5 - Dark Reign
It deals with the aftermath of the "Secret Invasion" storyline, which led to a shift of power in the Marvel Universe toward Norman Osborn.

Thor 4 would occur during this time adapting Ragnarok and Fear Itself as Thor faces a rival to the throne and Earth is threatened. 'Seige' would be adapted to be the storyline for the Avengers 6 and either feature the Dark Avengers attacking Asgard OR the unprovoked attack on Atlantis which would allow for the introduction of Namor as a justifiable villain who would later turn heroic.

The main theme of Phase 4, 5 and 6 would be the idea of public identity. Skrulls who steal identity, Osborn who manipulates public image and finally Kang the Conqueror who represents the potential for them to fall into being exactly how the public views them as.

@willyburz - Well I wouldn't say never. And not every film has to be connected for the sake of world building. I mean Nolans Batman films didn't connect to a bigger DC world but they were great standalone films.

@HeavyMetal4Life - the nice thing about they mentioning Secret Wars is they're aware of Doom's part in that one and the type of villain he is. That alone already brings a smile to my face.

I say give em a Justice League International movie. They love the team stuff and it would be fun to see em doing a more comedy film than the heavier superhero dramas they been doing. I also just love the JLI.

I'm honestly still shocked at how WB went after Whedon and Gunn.

I wouldn't be surprised if they got the Russos 5 years down the line.

After a few years to get the X-Men and F4 rolling, a Secret Wars style movie would be fine by me (as long as there's some better antagonist than the Beyonder: actually having Doctor Doom hijack the thing and become nigh-godlike is a fun twist). Maybe the Celestials or even the Grandmaster having somehow landed on his feet and gotten some cosmic juice on his own (fueled by a grudge against Thor and Hulk for Ragnarok).

But as much as I loved that trade paperback as a kid, too, it's not a great foundation for telling emotionally meaningful stories about characters, which is still Marvel's bread and butter. (The 80's series most directly centered on Molecule Man of all people).

And there's still a non-negligible chance that Marvel Studios and WB will get their ducks in a row for a Marvel vs. DC crossover movie*, where the same premise (a malicious force throws these characters together to make them fight) might still be useful and fairly novel. I wouldn't want to waste the one chance at getting "everybody to fight" on just Marvel's everybody.

* Not any time soon, of course, but maybe ten or fifteen years from now, and allowing older actors to reprise their roles with CG de-aging or even all-CG reconstructions/merging of actors to present an idealized version of the event. Superheroes are huge right now and may stay that way for a long time, but there will always be a desire among fans and creatives to go bigger. Marvel vs. DC always presents the final frontier of bigness for the genre. And if bigness represents profit potential, then I wouldn't rule out producers becoming enamored with the idea.

^^ That's why these guys are so good with these characters.

It shows in their work on Community. This is just a MUCH larger scale, obviously.

@L0RDbuckethead - just another reason among many why the Russos are the greatest comic book directors. They just get "it" in every way possible.
