Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will take the helm of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but the filmmaker won't be shooting that and Avengers: Secret Wars back-to-back...

By JoshWilding - Jul 28, 2022 07:07 AM EST

The day before Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation, some very interesting trademarks surfaced online for what appeared to be a number of upcoming movies and TV shows.

Among them were Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, both of which were then confirmed by Kevin Feige in San Diego. The former, directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, will be released on May 2, 2025, while The Multiverse Saga's finale is set to follow on November 7 that same year.

However, it appears the movies won't shoot back-to-back. Variety reporter Justin Kroll also reveals that the plan is for a different filmmaker to take charge of Secret Wars. That means Cretton will only helm The Kang Dynasty, leaving the door open to the Russo Brothers to return to the MCU to direct what we know is their dream project.

Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were filmed at the same time and it proved to be a massive undertaking, but it also made sense because those movies told a two-part story with the same characters and actors.

Now, we can't help but wonder just how different these movies will be. Could it be that Kang the Conqueror's defeat comes in The Kang's Dynasty, with the aftermath of the battle - a twisted new MCU as unrecognisable as the one we saw in the comic book version of Secret Wars - explored in the next movie?

It's hard to say, but there are movies and TV shows set to be released between these two adventures for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Perhaps those projects will explore the fallout or even set the stage for a small group to fight back against whoever rules over the new MCU? Once again looking at the comics, we wouldn't be at all surprised to see Doctor Doom step out of the shadows to defeat Kang and remake the world in his image.

Hopefully, more details will be revealed by Marvel Studios during September's Disney+ Day and D23.

It's got to be someone that's directed for Marvel before you'd assume? very surprised they give Secret Wars to anyone new

If they don't manage to bring the Russo's back I'd say it's either going to be Payton Reed, Ryan Coogler or maybe Jon Watts. this could be why he left F4?

I don't see Favreau coming back though, he's got his plate full.

Adil and Bilal? They could be cool...depending on how Batgirl turns out.

@UniqNo - seems clear that Watts left F4 for his new Star Wars show that is currently filming.

I like the Peyton Reed idea, especially with him doing Quantumania.

@thewanderer - Possibly, but that's already filming. Realistically Avengers 5 and 6 would probably need to be filming by end of next year, which still gives quite a bit of time for pre-production....Not sure about post though!? With all the VFX comapines now black balling Marvel haha.

@UniqNo - Jon Watts left F4 because he wanted a break from superhero stuff. Highly doubt he'd come back to do THE biggest superhero stuff lol

@KWilly - You're right, he wanted a break, but didn't say he was done. Release dates differ by about a year though, so that's still enough time. And i got a feel Secret wars will be having Spider-Man playing an integral role.

@UniqNo - I think Quantumania is done filming? But good point about the post-production that Reed would be involved with.

@thewanderer - no in regards to Watts, his skeleton crew thing is already filming, so after filming and post, i'd imagine he'd still have time to jump onto secret wars later next year. Just guess work though as obviously we don't know who it's gonna be. But i'd also imagine it will be someone who's already involved in another marvel property.

But let's not forget Whedon only came on board for his 2 avengers movie, so it could also be someone with no prior involvment with good credits to their name.

@UniqNo - this may not be a popular choice, but how about Chloe Zhao.

@thewanderer - Haha, i didn't want to be the one the say that name, but it crossed my mind.

I appreciated Eternals for what it was, elements of the story, the feel it had that differs from the rest, the shooting locations and the wonderful cinematography. It also seemed the cast got on with her and when you're doing an ensemble piece like secret wars, that's important.

But Eternals was just boring and lacked proper pace. The villian(s) was crap, and the leads weren't that engaging. I'm not sure if she's to fully blame, but she is listed as co writer.

With all the moving pieces in a production like Secret Wars and the liklihood it will be using a shit load of green screen i can imagine she won't be into that however.

She would be a divisive choice though, that's for sure.

@thewanderer - I enjoy Eternals so I wouldn’t be Opposed.

Make sense, considering they are more than likely going to be filmed back to back.
No idea who could it be, though.

Definitely going to be another current MCU director. Or former. Wouldn’t mind seeing Favreau return. If not, Coogler gets my vote.

@GhostDog - I'd love to see Favreau back, but I think he's going to stay pretty busy with Star Wars.

I hope not! That's too much work for one director in such a short period of time.

Duh? That's far too much for one director to take on. Two Avengers movies in 6 months.

Even two Avengers movies in a year took two directors.

The Russo's deserve this one. They keep talking about wanting to do Secret Wars.

@IronMan616 - I think they would rather reboot X-Men instead.

@soberchimera - Never heard them say anything about X-Men. They should get Secret Wars since they keep talking about it. Plus they want to use the '85 version.
Uhhhhhh

@IronMan616 - They want to use the inferior version? Hard pass on them then lmao
IronMan616
IronMan616 - 7/28/2022, 3:19 PM
@Uhhhhhh - They should do a combination of the two so you can get characters that have died to be in the movie. Either bring back the actor/actress or or recast. Easily explained via multiverse variants.

I really hope for the Russos so we get some stuff from SW84 and not only SW2015(if you could say only when it will only be a very loose adaptation)
WakandanQueen

I assumed as much, but these films are (currently at least) coming out way too close to each other for them not to be filmed... simultaneously? Like, maybe even as one. Guess Feige has some clear plans for each film and there will be tons of communication between Cretton and whoever does SW.

Watch Feige give it to Boden & Fleck lmao.
