Fans have been wondering if Marvel's The Avengers - arguably the most anticipated CBM in history - would manage to break records for midnight showings last night. The movie has already made $300+M internationally already, and is expected to make a killing Stateside too, tracking off the charts in every category and with every demographic. But according to Deadline, The Avengers was unsuccessful in beating the $40+M record set by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2..
Rival studios tell me that Marvel’s The Avengers from Disney did not set a record for midnight showings — and made $20 million from about 2,500 North American theaters. The midnight record is still Warner Bros’ Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $43.5M. Disney has not released an official number yet.
I wouldn't feel too sorry for Joss Whedon's epic though. In addition to the $300M it's made already, word is that the movie could be on track to earning an additional $585M by Sunday alone, from debut screenings in North America, China and Russia. Plus, the movie did set a record for midnight earnings for a super hero movie, so there's that. You can check out my 5 star review of the movie
