BOX OFFICE: THE AVENGERS Pulls In $20M From Midnight Showings, But Fails To Break Record

Marvel's superhero ensemble made a whopping 20 million last night from midnight screenings, but is still over $20m shy of the record set by a certain young four-eyed wizard..

Fans have been wondering if Marvel's The Avengers - arguably the most anticipated CBM in history - would manage to break records for midnight showings last night. The movie has already made $300+M internationally already, and is expected to make a killing Stateside too, tracking off the charts in every category and with every demographic. But according to Deadline, The Avengers was unsuccessful in beating the $40+M record set by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2..

Rival studios tell me that Marvel’s The Avengers from Disney did not set a record for midnight showings — and made $20 million from about 2,500 North American theaters. The midnight record is still Warner Bros’ Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $43.5M. Disney has not released an official number yet.

I wouldn't feel too sorry for Joss Whedon's epic though. In addition to the $300M it's made already, word is that the movie could be on track to earning an additional $585M by Sunday alone, from debut screenings in North America, China and Russia. Plus, the movie did set a record for midnight earnings for a super hero movie, so there's that. You can check out my 5 star review of the movie HERE

Avengers' 1st film versus Harry's 8th film. Realistically, i wasn't expecting it to break that record anyway to tell you the truth. But the billion is just around the corner ;)

Yeah... I agree with Shaman this is the first one. So I think its doing very well for that... with 20 million on midnight showings, wouldn't that be second place in midnight showing records?

Anyway hope it continues to do so well. :D

Saw the midnight showing of Avengers..... FREAKIN AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

The build up was compelling. Showing how they finally become a team was well done. Individual character dynamic was excellent. Definitely have to see this again.

I cant imagine another CBM will match it this summer. This set a new standard. But if TDKR is anywhere near as good, then this summer kicks ass

Seems true...I arrived early, and my theater wasn't even full.

Next I have to try the Dbox seats at UltraStars... the seats vibrate to explosions, tilt during chase scenes, lean back to feel like the plane took off. Like Mini Star Tours for any movie. Avengers is the perfect movie for this

That means that Avengers made about the same as The Hunger Games midnight showing which keeps it on track to $150 million +. The big test is whether the movie will drop 50% or 70% after the first weekend.

Yea but there are still some people like me who have college classes early Friday morning so we elect to go during the weekend. Harry potter came out during the summer so I kinda expected this

There's a huge factor that's not being mentioned, Harry potter was released during the summer; kids were on vacation and out like drones.
