Walt Disney and Marvel Studios have announced a new distribution agreement with Paramount Pictures, resolving which studio will handle the worldwide distribution for the much-anticipated Avengers movie, as well as the third Iron Man film. Check out the official press release below.

BURBANK, Calif. – October 18, 2010 – The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios announced they have reached an agreement under which Paramount will transfer its worldwide marketing and distribution rights to Disney for Marvel Studios’ The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Paramount will remain the worldwide distributor of the upcoming films, Thor and Captain America, as well as the previously released Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Under terms of the new deal, Disney will pay Paramount $115 million for the transfer of the distribution rights to Iron Man 3 and The Avengers to be paid on the theatrical release dates. These monies will serve as a minimum guarantee against the distribution fees.

“In completing this agreement, Disney will now assume worldwide marketing and distribution of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 and leverage these two highly-anticipated films across the multiple global platforms of The Walt Disney Company,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “We appreciate the tremendous momentum that Paramount established with these iconic Marvel characters and look forward to propelling the brand even further in the coming years.”

“Five years ago, when Paramount and Marvel made our initial deal, both our businesses were in very different places,” said Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures. “We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the terrific Marvel team over these years and proud of the work we have done together. Today, this new agreement is the right deal for Paramount, for Marvel and for Disney. We look forward to working together on Thor and Captain America, and we wish Disney and Marvel the utmost success, in what we know will be a very productive and wide-ranging partnership.”

"Paramount has been a wonderful partner in helping Marvel Studios bring our characters to the big screen," said Alan Fine, Office of the President, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. "This agreement makes sense now that Marvel is part of The Walt Disney Company."

Paramount will release Marvel Entertainment’s Thor and Captain America worldwide beginning on May 6 and July 22 of 2011, respectively. The Avengers will be licensed to Epix under Paramount’s existing pay television arrangement.

Well, that makes sense! I think they mentioned this a while ago anyway...it'll be strange to see the Disney banner come up on screen before the movie starts though, lol! :P

I love that picture how everyone except Hawkeye(Renner) looks serious, Scarlet totally looks like Black Widow and Stark(Downey)has that cool but serious pose and Cap(Evans) looks cool and Thor Hemswoorth loolk totally godly

Disney does market their shit off the charts though, and more Avengers exposure

Distributing and marketing have nothing to do with creative control.

From the "About the Company" Section of any given Disney film-related press release:

"Feature films are released under four banners: Walt Disney Pictures, which includes Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, Disneynature, Marvel, and Touchstone Pictures, which includes the distribution of live action films from DreamWorks Studios."

All banners fall under the "Walt Disney STUDIOS" company umbrella, but as you can see, not all of them are distributed under "Walt Disney PICTURES".

With them crediting Marvel as it's own banner, as they do with Touchstone, it's much more likely that when the Avengers comes out we'll ONLY be seeing the Marvel logo in front of the film.

awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! marvels getting theier own film banner!!!!!!!! this means that form avengers & iron man 3 forward all marvel films currently at disney will have the marvel logo before the film with the small underline of "A WALT DISNEY COMPANY". this probobly means the runaways,ant-man,& docter strange are going to be distributed by disney in the same way as well as all other planned films. because of this news, disney is now probobly planing on buying back the rights from fox,sony,new line,so start counting down the days cause you never know what will be announced!!!!!!!

That'll be weird, does that mean that we'll not see a Iron Man Trilogy set? Different companies (unless under the same overall banner) almost never put products together, that'll be odd...

At least Paramount will still get to distribute Thor and Cap. They have done a wonderful job, and if Disney didnt buy Marvel, they would have kept doing it. I really dont mind who distributes it. Now if the Spiderman reboot can be stooped, I would approve :)

Everyone likes to freak out about this but just look at Pixar. Disney distributes the movies but Pixar is in total control of the movie. The same will happen with Marvel Studios. Disney is in the money making business and business is good at Marvel Studios.

its finally happened, it was inevitable, as long as Disney doesnt interfere with Marvel, the future is looking very bright for Marvel Studios

@josh
you are right, it will be slightly weird for the first couple of years seeing the Disney sign but we will get used to it after that

very interesting @ MaxJaybo

@ComicCritic
God I hope that happens soon, but the way I look at it is Marvel and Disney may have to wait until they have turned most of Marvel's major characters into movie and tv franchises and then with the major profits they will buy back all the other franchises and in the meantime they will wait for the franchises to come back to Marvel Studios naturally which of course happened with the Punisher

Why all the Brandon Routh comments for an article about Disney and The Avengers/Iron Man 3?

Anyhoo...this is great news. Disney is a marketing POWERHOUSE and The Avengers will be the culmination of a very ambitious plan by Marvel Studios and to have the "House of Mouse" handling the distribution rights is just fantastic for all parties involved.

Disney paid Paramount $113 for the distribution rights and this will serve as a minimum guarantee against distribution fees.

Disney is so lucky to get that under their belts and the movies will probably be a lot more successful with Disney behind the wheel because they can almost always get people to see their big release movies :)

StuckInPanels
StuckInPanels - 10/18/2010, 7:17 PM
@Neumn13....not necessarily...Disney owns some companies that have released R rated movies and they might be the place for any R rated Marvel movies....which if you think about it...who besides Punisher and Ghost Rider could get R ratings?

So does this mean when we go into the theater to watch'em we'll see the disney logo after the marvel logo? If your a parent who brings their kids into the theater early make sure you got the right room...

I think this will be a good thing. Disney movies and all of the ones from studios under Disney are usually always well polished films. Disney knows how to make great movies that apeal to alot of people which is what the idiots at fox constently fail at.

Can't wait for the Anhilation or world war hulk to hit the big screen under Disney. Watch out George Lucas!
