JOSS WHEDON: Talking SHIELD, HULK & DC Movies

In an interview with Deadline to discuss his version of Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon eventually allowed the conversation to turn towards his Marvel projects and, in particular, S.H.I.E.L.D., which he discusses in this excerpt from that interview.

On S.H.I.E.L.D.

"That was fun to do, but again, too much work. The idea of the Little Guy is something that I am very fierce about, and there has never been a better Little Guy than Clark Gregg. That intrigued me, this world around the superhero community. It’s the people whose shop windows get blown up when the Destroyer shows up. It’s the more intimate stories that belong on television that we can really tap into the visual style and ethos, and even some of the mythology, of the Marvel movies. I think we’ve put together another really great ensemble headed by Clark. And how much it’s actually seeding or hinting or reacting to what’s going on in the movies is something we’ll let play out as we go. For me the most important thing is that people fall in love with it on its own merits, rather than constantly asking, “Is there gonna be an Avenger?” Well, there’s not gonna be a Hulk because that guy’s too expensive.

"I will be as involved as I can be – mostly on a story level. On the TV show I can say, “No, do it my way.” I’m just trying to keep it exciting and meaningful and surprising."

ON THE PARAMETERS OF HIS MARVEL CONSULTING ASSIGNMENT:
"I understand what Kevin [Feige] is going for and where he’s heading, and I read the scripts and watch cuts and talk to the directors and writers and give my opinion. Occasionally there could be some writing. But I’m not trying to get in anybody’s soup, I’m just trying to be helpful. Every time you work on a project it’s a little vacation from the project you’re working on the other 23 hours. That’s the thing – it replenishes you to do something else. And they’re very aware that if I’m too tired or busy to help with anything, that’s fine. But if I can help and not get in the way of the actual filmmakers, that’s what I’m going to do.

ON HULK SPIN-OFF MOVIES:
"The Hulk is the most difficult Marvel property because it’s always about balance. Is he a monster? Is he a hero? Are you going to root for a protagonist who spends all his time trying to stop the reason you came to the movie from happening? It’s always a dance. I don’t think the first two movies nailed it, but I don’t envy them the task. It was easier to have him in a group than to build everything around him. I don’t think there would be any problem getting a movie together that had enough Banner, even if there was also Hulk. But if he was only Hulk for the entire movie I think Mark [Ruffalo] at some point would go, why am I here? I would be less inclined to pursue a storyline where the Hulk is only ever the Hulk. Mark [Ruffalo] and I loved the Hulk and went over and over the concept of rage and how it should manifest, and that part of it was fascinating to both of us. But when it comes time for the Hulk he has to put on the silliest damn pajamas you ever saw, a tiara made of balls, and a bunch of dots on his face and growl around like an idiot. The real heart of the experience ultimately becomes playing Banner. And people fell in love with Banner because I think Mark has you from the first time he shows up."

ON THE DC CINEMATIC UNIVERSE:
"I don’t keep that close an eye on it. But I loved Batman Begins so much and thought Christopher Nolan nailed Batman in a way that nobody ever had. It couldn’t be more different from The Avengers, and the Marvel and DC universes are different animals. If they actually crack the code which has not been done in terms of creating a shared sensibilities where all the movies are interesting and come together, I’m going to be thrilled. I have no fear that we’re going to be stepping on each others’ turf.

"It’s not easy. It’s not a simple trick. The Marvel properties with the exception of Batman who has often been described as the Marvel character in the DC universe are much easier to translate to a modern audience. Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern are so far above us and their powers are amorphous and that makes it 10 times harder. Even when you’re doing a fight, it’s harder to write a fight for Thor than it is for Captain America because he’s that much stronger. I loved what I was doing on Wonder Woman. Clearly I was an excited party of one. I wrote the movie, I felt good about the characters, the structure needed work, I did another outline, they read it and were done. There wasn’t even a phone call."

@thefirstavenger Where did you read that ??

He mentionned Cap once, and that was a mere comparison with Thor.

As for the Hulk, he said it's tough. Tough for him. Believe it or not, there are other directors other than Joss Whedon.

like ive said before, hulk movie makes no sense right now. whedon is putting a stamp and seal on it. quit requesting a solo movie when it wouldnt make sense to do it when theres no story there that could go with their future plans. just throwing in a hulk movie is a waste of money and time.

@brazilianbatman
he meant superman, wonder woman, and green lantern are powerful in terms of audience and their legends for lack of better words. theyre characters that need no introduction to the general audience. those guys are big in name

its harder because thor should just be able to summon lightning and fry everyone. thats why. thor is a god but in these movies he needs to sink down to a level where he looks vulnerable but again, hes a god. why do you think he only fought worthy opponents in loki and hulk. in one scene he pretty much took down a couple leviathans with one hit of thunder. it wouldnt be an intense action scene if hes just mowing through everyone.

Ed Norton doesnt work as well within an ensemble cast. Terrence Howard asked for too much money for a supporting role. Rourke is the only one that got the shaft.

Whedon is only repeating what is common knowledge throughout Hollywood about DC characters. Be outraged if you want but he knows tons more about making movies than everyone on this site combined.

The Hulk is a difficult movie to pull off because the idiots who continue making the movies want to make it an origin film. The Hulk stole the show in the Avengers and has proven that he could have his own solo movie. The Leader was introduced in the Incredible Hulk and would have made a great villain for a Hulk solo movie. To solve the issue of screen time between the Hulk and Banner, they could take a page out of Avengers EMH and have Banner appear as the Hulks conscious and interact with the Hulk when nobody is around.

Would love to see another Hulk movie. If the do do another movie, they should take a page from INDESTRUCTABLE HULK and have be an agent of SHIELD where Banner basically says to Nick Fury, "tell me where the villain is, and I'll aim the Hulk at it." They kind of hinted at that during the climax of INCREDIBLE HULK. Really want to see the Leader, cuz that would be cool to see a villain that the Hulk has to outsmart.

I thought every Banner was great, if I had to put them in order it would be:

1: Mark Ruffalo
2: Edward Norton
3: Eric Bana

As great as they all were, my DEFINITIVE Banner/Hulk will always be Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno.

@FOOM exclude me from your generalization, I have literally read hundreds of books about making movies and am writing books, screenplays and scripts at this very moment. I know quite a large amount about making movies as I research every aspect about movies I not only like but also the ones I hate. I am a writer and film buff along with an avid researcher of near everything I come across which is how I have my IQ at the level it is (178), I devote myself to anything I set myself to do. It is not good to generalize. I probably know quite a large chunk about what goes into film making.

You know what. If Dave Bautista doesnt get Drax he would make a perfect absorbing man. He needs to be big. Like prison inn mate who has nothing better to do than work out and beat the crap out of people. Thats Crusher Creel.

We have hardly heard the hulk at all. Hulk smash. Puny god. Errrgggggggg!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does that about sum up all his lines? I enjoyed his dialogue in Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes. Especially his banter with Hawkeye.

In my opinion, Warner Bros. will never live down the fact that they booted Joss Whedon off of their Wonder Woman movie. That was the absolute HEIGHT of stupidity, and Joss went ahead and proved that by making one of the greatest comic book movies of all time... for the opposing team.

WB needs to get their act together and put out a good Wonder Woman movie. And a good Flash movie. And a good Green Lantern sequel.

She was poisoned by the abomination. In turn Ross as the Red Hulk killed abomination. Would actually work in film. Absorbing man got his powers from Loki in the comics. Lokis in the MCU so they could even accurately translate him if they wanted.

@DioFoRio - I think it mostly has to do with Catwoman and Elektra failing so badly. Most companies are just scared that female superhero movies dont work

I would LOVE to read his Wonder Woman outline/script.... as well as Geoff Johns Flash script... I bet they both nailed it on the head. then came Warner bros with their opinions and ruined anything good.

Well Whedon is successful at turning female leads into hits. Take your pick from all his shows. They had a chance and they passed on it. Could bite them in the ass.

He ALWAYS says the right things! LOL

And by the way, STOP with your fan casting!

You guys ALWAYS look for an actor that looks like the character as drawn in the comics!

Which is NEVER the best way!

Weve all seen that any actor can look like a character if they take the right precaussions, bulking up, make up, wigs, etc.
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 3/7/2013, 11:47 PM
Bautista doesnt look like Crusher Creel. He just has the right build. Crusher Creel was a ripped mutha in the comics.

Its very difficult to create excitment in a battle when the characters are so powerful. That what Joss is refering to when he says certain characters are too powerful.

If you verge on the indestructable and can easily defeat anyone in your path then where are the stakes??? Where is the threat to life and limb? Why should we care?

They gave Thor a decent threat by taking his powers away for large parts of the film. But when he has them his fight sequences tend to be either too quick or too easy. When he was fighting the frost giants I never felt for one second he was in any danger. In fact I kinda felt sorry for them. And the Odin shows up to save them - why??

The only reason was so he could get mad at Thor for being a dick and having Laufey tell him they were at war.

All those cosmic DC characters suffer in the same way.

@billytwohats

But Zod and Supes are on the same level. Whedon had to tone down Thor in his fight w/ Iron Man, or else Starks would have been curb stomped.

WYLEEJAY - 3/8/2013, 12:24 AM
When characters that powerful clash, it should be felt. Like when Superman fought Doomsday, they punched each other so hard the shockwaves blew out all the windows. Marvel only really showcased this kinda power in the Incredible Hulk so far. When the two of them slammed into each other in the street.
