Joss Whedon: "The Avengers Is A Ridiculous Concept"

The director - who is currently shooting the project with stars Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr, and Scarlett Johansson - admits the comic-book based film, is slightly unusual, and will be humorous as a result.

Director Joss Whedon recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming movie while making the press rounds.

Whedon: "For me, a movie works if you put people in dire circumstances and they find it funny.

"It's just like the comics - the fate of the world always depends on what happening, but if it gets self-important and dull then nobody wins.

'The Avengers' is a ridiculous concept. It's a very motley crew, so there's always going to be humor in something like that."

Joss also admits he particularly enjoys watching all of the actors come together and "geek out" about their co-star's outfits.

He added to Total Film: "It's so rare that you actually get everybody together, but it is fun when you do.

"The best part is watching the way they geek out with each other. You get someone dresses as Captain America going, 'Wow! It's Thor!'

Ridiculous you say? Of course it is. It's ridiculously awesome and while it's arguable to say it will be the greatest comic book movie ever, because many will swear by Donner, Raimi, and Nolan. I dare say it will be the single biggest "Geek Out" moment in comic book history!

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based upon the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which crosses over several Marvel superhero films including Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans. The Avengers is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2012 and tells the story of Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., who recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August.

Based on that statement it seems that Whedon is definitely putting his patented spin on the movie. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing I'm just having a hard time visualizing that in terms of the Avengers.

@GraphicCity - It's not necessarily a good thing, either.

And I don't think Nolan has any reason to fear Whedon.

In other words its gonna be drenched in uncalled for jokes and light situations that put it in the same realm as Fantastic Four. Thanks but no thanks, most I see people gettin out of this is seeing all those heroes on the same screen...about it.

I agree. It IS ridiculous. Why would a god, a soldier, a billionaire playboy, and some super spies get together to fight evil. I mean: I can see some of the characters from the original team getting together. Tony and Hank are both scientists. Janet is part of the package deal with Hank. Even so.

I can't wait for the film, though.

EH let's relax with the "this will be the best CBM ever!" attitude. Very untested director here. At least Favreu showed some chops with Elf and Zathura. I'm more skeptical about this movie than anything but I definitely WANT it to be epic.

Trudy- I don't think Nolan knows what fear is. I mean put yourself in his shoes for a minute. The man can give people a turd on a stick and light it on fire while convincing everyone that it's actually spectacular. Of course i'm not referencing anything he's done specifically.

@jjmeylar - I have an answer for you... because it's FANTASY. Why would an alien, a detective in a bat costume, a fish man, and a really fast guy get together? Hate to tell you this, but that's how they drew it up in the comics, minus a few characters (the lamest ones) of course.

Please keep the humor to a minimum. The Humor in Iron Man was fine. That was mostly due to what Downey brought to life to the character. But please don't go out of your way to try and make it a yuck fest with weird masturbation jokes and dogs humping the heroes legs. You know- don't be Michael Bay.
