Kevin Feige On The Success Of THE AVENGERS, DC's Plans For JUSTICE LEAGUE And More

The Marvel Studios President talks about the success of The Avengers and why he believes director Joss Whedon was the right man for the job. Feige also discusses the way in which DC are handling their Justice League movie and teases the team dynamic of Guardians of the Galaxy.

While the majority never doubted that The Avengers would be a success, a lot of box office analysts didn't think it would even manage to beat Iron Man 2's haul of $620+ million. Well, $1.5 billion later and it's fair to say that they couldn't have been more wrong (although it's doubtful that anyone predicted that it would become the third highest grossing film of all time). The superhero ensemble was also a critical success, receiving unanimous praise from fans and critics alike. Talking to MTV News' Josh Wigler, Kevin Feige had this to say about those incredible figures and why writer and director Joss Whedon was the right man for the job.

"We've had the good fortune of having a lot of dreams come true. I still remember six, seven years ago, thinking about casting Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. 'It's outside the box! It could be like Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow! It could take off!' Clearly, we're there now. That being said, you can never honestly expect this kind of success and be any kind of reasonable human being. I was just hoping it would be the biggest Marvel Studios movie of all time. It's got to beat 'Iron Man 2' or we really screwed it all up. And we more than doubled that."

"We believed that Joss could handle the spectacle, along with the amazing crafts people and technicians we hired, but never letting the characters get lost among the spectacle. We knew it would be a big movie with big visual effects. But I never wanted these great character who we love and have established in other films to get lost in the spectacle. 'And now they fight aliens!' We wanted the characters to stand out, and that's Joss' signature. I think he did his best job yet with 'Avengers.'"

As for how he feels about Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment's plans for a Justice League movie and the different approach that the studio is clearly taking, it's clear that he believes Marvel's way was the right approach despite offering a diplomatic response. It's also interesting to note what he says about the team dynamic we'll see in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. "There's no rule that say you have to do it one way or the other, though I believe that what was unique about 'Avengers' was not that it was a group of superheroes, but a group of superheroes you knew and loved from other [films] all coming together. It wasn't like 'X-Men,' which is inherently a team-based film, or 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' which we're working on right now and is also a team-based film from the start. It was all of these people from other stories coming in and merging for one story. That's what was cool to me about 'Super Friends' when I was a kid and that's why I wanted to do 'Avengers' the way we did it."

As WB is still twiddling their thumbs about how to do a JLA movie, Marvel/Disney is already full force with Phase 2. Fiege is right, there isn't a rule on how to approach this, but when someone leaked that WB/DC was exploring parallel cinematic universes, that's when you knew they don't know what the hell they're doing over there.

I agree, part of the fun with The Avengers was their solo movies before & you knew that they would get together. I think some people on this site don't want solo films before JL is because they want a JL movie now.

Yeah having parrell cinematic universe seems odd. However one thing you could argue in favor of it though: If JL flopped and has nothing to do with the solo films, then it might not affect the solo films.

However that is the only "loose" argument I can come up with for it.

There is not right or wrong way of doing it. Without sounding harsh, Marvel needed to do the solo movies to give their characters expose. Before IM1, Thor, Cap Am these characters were not in the league of Batman, Superman and Spiderman.

DC/WB, in my opinion, should make MoS (Make sure that is a great movie) and then a Batman reboot - Then put them in the same movie that will make huge money without the need of the other characters.

Awesome. Ant-Man is a must to be in Phase 2 though! Please squeeze him in! Black Panther would be a good one to squeeze in too.

Knightrider - 9/19/2012, 1:54 PM
Also the other thing to take into account is Avengers made 1.5billion that is almost a billion more than any of their other films.

So this clearly shows you that many people who watched the Avengers either hadn't watched any or all the solo films before hand, so solo movies first from a general audience point of view is really needed.

People will show up if a movie is good and appealing - WB/DC have the appeal aspect with having Superman and Batman in the same movie, they just need to get the "good" part right.

@superotherside According to Louis D'Esposito, Ant-Man may or may not be part of Phase 2. I hope it does. Then again Louis seems like he doesn't know what he's talking about, he's like Matt Tolmach. Both just need not to talk.lol

"hat was your benchmark for Avengers? Pretty easy mark to hit, I'll give him that. Lol" Well I'd say 640 a mil box office take is hardly a given in this day and age. Iron Man 2 was riding the wave of one of the best CBMs ever made, people were really looking forward to that and the initial numbers proved it. Had the movie been better it would have pushed 1 bil from repeat viewings.

GOTG better be done well, or Doom will be very disappointed. Doom recommends that DC not make a JLA movie it is DOOMED to fail as hard as the GL film.

Parallel movie universes almost comes off as though WB isn't sure if they want a future project associated with another if it was to fail...

Translation: if JLA fails we don't want it associated with our batman reboot
SageMode
SageMode - 9/19/2012, 3:54 PM
With the exception of IRON MAN and THE AVENGERS, the Phase 1 films were moreso stepping stones and leadups for the Avengers rather than trying to make themselves landmarks as solo films. But with that out the way, the rest of the MCU, i believe, will be alot more innovative individually.

Justice league will be a huge success of course but really I don't see how it could be anywhere near as good unless you go the marvel rout. It doesn't have to even be about post credits(those certainly help) but if they don't at least have the actors from their singular movies its gonna blow but make tons of doe

Man man man things are looking mighty low for DC... especially when you consider that things are so hot for Marvel right now they can envision a "Phase 2" taking such a risk like going "Cosmic" with 'Guardians of the Galaxy' instead the taking advantage of the "Avengers high" to introduce more Marvel greats like Black Panther and Doctor Strange or Power Man & Iron Fist or going after reacquiring Fantastic Four and Daredevil!! Feige and crew must feel like they can do no wrong, and that Justice League can't touch them, not in time...

As for a JL movie in 2015 going up against Avengers 2, that sounds like putting a .357 Magnum short-barrel right on the temple to me, then hearing Danny Glover spit in your face "No no don't play around, don't nibble on the barrel!!" from Lethal Weapon... all I can say is that Man of Steel had not only better be the BOMB and then some, but DC had better be using it bigtime to set up their own 'Cinematic Universe.' I mean cameos from Diana Prince or Barry Allen or Hal Jordon/Ryan Reynolds. NO TIME TO REBOOT; settle down that nasty suit and fast track GREEN LANTERN 2 with even more DC "Cinematic Universe" stuff like, I don't know, the new Bruce Wayne. Feige and Marvel had "THE PLAN," but DC doesn't have the kind of time left for the same kind of plan....
