Marvel's Official Website For The Avengers Gives Vague Teaser About The Loki Threat

A cryptic line in Loki's bio may hint at the outcome of the climatic final showdown between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Loki in Joss Whedon's Avengers.

Over at the official website for Marvel Studios' Avengers, each character has a bio as part of the site's slick new design. There's isn't any new information there except for when you read Loki's bio. This isn't a huge revelation by any stretch of the imagination but I believe it does merit some attention.

BIO: "After his bid to overthrow the throne of Asgard was thwarted by his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the evil Loki (Tom Hiddleston) retreated to lands unknown to plot his revenge. Not just against his brother, but against Earth, whose inhabitants Thor now protects. Loki, now returns with a nefarious plot to conquer Earth and will stop at nothing to see his vision realized. When his misuse of power threatens the entire planet, it may take more than The Avengers to stop him."

What could this cryptic line possibly be referring to? My initial thought was that they're teasing that Odin would be a factor in finally putting Loki down but then I remembered that Tom Hiddleston has previously stated that Odin will not be appearing in the movie. My next thought was that some other character would be turning up to assist the team but then I remembered that Kevin Feige has stated that no new heroes will be introduced in the film. Finally, I remembered that Tom Hiddleston has been stating in numerous interviews that Loki is a very "complex character and a shape-shifter" and it's possible that Loki could change sides to become good. Based on that info from Hiddleston [you should really go back and read that interview] I think it's possible that we may get a reversal of Loki's development in Thor. When we first met Loki he fought alongside Thor and The Warriors 3 and was only a tad bit mischievous and scheming. It wasn't until he discovered the truth about his parentage that he went all-out villain. Taking Hiddleston's quote at face value, it seems that we may get a reversal of that development in The Avengers and Loki could start out as a villain but waver and ultimately falter by the end of the movie. Perhaps, elder brother Thor is able to appeal to what little goodness remains within Loki? It would certainly be in keeping with his comic book counterpart and would account for that "it may take more than The Avengers to stop him" bit at the end of Loki's bio.

Still, this is only speculation on my part. That line could very easily refer to The Avengers acquiring a device from Odin's vault or maybe someone from one of the worlds Loki visited in-between Thor and Avengers [Feige stated no heroes will cameo, he said nothing about villains] will be that extra-something that tilts the victory scale in The Avengers favor at the end of the day.

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures1, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which crosses over several Marvel superhero films including Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio, in August and New York City in September.

The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States.

Anyone else think that Sam Jackson firing that rocket launcher at New York is actually an alien or maybe even Loki? Why would Stark be flying right next to it headed in the same direction? I dont think he's flying in the same direction to juct get blown to pieces. Maybe he is, idk...we'll see.

Just a thought.

The Avenging Loki!!!

Very cool, I know that they are going to introduce some cosmic elements into this movie! We're going to get some Loki, maybe skrulls and hopefully some Thanos or maybe even the Watcher.

Cool, I saw this yesterday, was wondering when someone would bring it to CBM's notice... :)

Graphic City Interesting stuff, glad you brought it to everyone's attention! :)

And there came a day, a day unlike any other. When Spider-man and Batman faced each other at the box office. Each fighting for the audience, but on that day, The Avengers owned all.

Disclaimer: I only meant this as a joke, but this comment is sure to bring all the Bat fans hating so please take this lightly and laugh at the good hearted humor it was meant for.

It may take more than the avengers. Or it may not. Maybe it's just a way to say it's going to be really [frick]ing tough and a way to generate speculation in forums like this.

Or it could simply be referring to SHIELD.

We have a war that's supposed to be bigger than all the others put together that will start AND end in one movie and now it's supposed to be even bigger? How can they pull it of?
jj2g
jj2g - 11/19/2011, 1:23 PM
I am not going to read into too much here because if the put Thanos or someone of that caliber in the first film then that means they are TRYING to make the sequel or SEQUELS flop. There is gonna be no one, not even Joss, in their right mind would do a bone head move like that and then when it is time to close out the series they used their biggest one already, come on! That would be dumb. Now look, if it was Justice League and they did Darkseid it would be okay because having darksied be the villian is great but Thanos is more powerful than darksied and hulk put together, and darksied is the DC version of Thanos, think! That would be too much in one movie, it could just mean SHIELD or other heroes. Just don't read too much into it until the movie comes out, maybe I could be wrong you never know it could also mean that maybe asgardians come in to help or another alien group (kree/phanlax) come into help them mostly kree because they would want the cube too. AHEM! THIS COULD ALSO INTRODUCE MS MARVEL IF KREE COULD APPEAR IN THIS!
jj2g
jj2g - 11/19/2011, 1:31 PM
Also if they do Kree it would be able to let more cosmic and/or superpowered one onto the team because, let's face it, the team is mostly human, the only superpowered one is Thor and Cap doesn't count cuz he is still human just and perfect ability one, and advanced one i should say. Hulk is just a monster that carries rage and Iron man is a human in a suit that give him powers to do things. Everyone else die hard humans. Made my point, they may want to invite more superpowered ones and cosmic hereoes bc Feige did state Guardians of the Galaxy which means they want more than relaistic movies and human heroes.

Interesting interesting

I agree with Intruder thou!

It could be that Loki join Avengers against a bigger threat! Which hopefully is Thanos!

Red Skull would be awesome too but i remember Hugo Weaving saying something like he doesnt want to play the character anymore. It would suck to see the role recast!
Mads Mikkelsen would be cool thou!

@Spidey
Did I say anything about Bane's motives? Has anyone said anything about Bane's motives? Do you know his reasons for attacking Gotham? Because I don't have a clue so far.The old 'try to take over the world!' cliche' is just lazy writing.Loki being out for revenge and to hurt Thor through hurting humanity is a valid motivation I can get behind. But to rule the world seems shortsighted and lame.I mean, why the hell would Loki want to?He has a universe to pick from, including Asgard itself,so why bother ruling us? I hope there's more to it because I want to like this movie!

Loki is awesome. He was probably one of my favorite characters in Thor, apart from the Son of Odin himself. Believe me, I don't usually cheer for the villains, but Loki... he was just amazing, and technically he's not a villain, not directly. The way he decieved Thor, it reminded me of Scar in the Lion King. Strangely.
