Filming is progressing for Marvel's highly-anticipated superhero extravaganza The Avengers, not only with a potential "New Mexico" set visit for specified media sites, but a new casting call sent to an airbase in Wilmington, Ohio. According to SHH user OB12, the following was emailed:

Marvel Studios will be filming portions of “The Avengers” in Wilmington, Ohio and is looking for interested Wright-Patterson Airmen to appear as extras. They are looking for approximately 50 males to portray Navy Carrier deck crew, Carrier maintenance crew and a few pilots. The scenes will be shot Aug. 1-4 in Wilmington on a simulated Aircraft Carrier deck.

The film is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Cobie Smulders. It is due to release in May 2012.

Extras will be paid $80 for 8 hours and time & 1/2 after 8 hours. Catered meals are included. If you’re asked to do anything beyond extra work, your pay will be adjusted.

This film is a DoD-supported film via the U.S. Army Entertainment Office, but your participation is purely voluntary. You must have your supervisor’s permission, fill out the IMT AF Form 3902 for Off-Duty Employment and be in leave status. Permissive TDY is not authorized.

A "simulated Aircraft Carrier deck?" Of course, that must be the SHIELD Helicarrier. It's great to know they're looking for experienced men, rather than locals. What do you think?

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig), the film releases worldwide May 4, 2012!

All I can say is Cap better be their leader. If Iron Man is the leader, the movie will suck.

And does anyone remember them saying in 2013 they would reboot the Avengers? Is that still happening?

Intruder@ I believe they were when they started, but are now their own branch of the military.

@Intruder Long time ago there was an article where Feige said that there were going to reboot the Avengers for 2013 so the audience would still get to see more. He said like, people will be so amazed they will want to see more, so in 2013 we'll have a reboot.
Guess I was wrong, then. Good though, an Avengers reboot would suck.

@Intruder Yeah okay, thanks for proving it wrong, I didnt want some Avengers crap reboot anyway.

@Nephillim - When a film is supported by the DOD it means they co-operate with them by letting them use military bases and personnel. They also lend them advisors so they can be as realistic as possible. This is all done for two reasons: the military doesn't want to be portrayed badly in the film, and as a potential recruitment tool. FYI, the DOD didn't support the producers of Independence Day because they refused to remove any references to Area 51.

@Intruder & Brash - The Air Force used to be part of the Army as the Army Air Corps. This changed shortly after WW2 when an act of Congress created the Air Force.

The Marines are part of the Navy. Marine officers use the same rank as Army and Air Force officers which may lead to some confusion. Marine pilots are stationed on aircraft carriers along with Navy pilots. FYI, the Coast Guard uses similar rank and ratings to that of the Navy, although they are part of Homeland Security.

That is your civics lesson for today :)

It was a DHL Airhub for years. Then they closed it and donated it to the city. Now it is One of the largest runways in America with like 100 permanent parked planes. Used to be an actual airforce base though. I love the pic of the Hulk with the Wright Patt Air Force Base sign. Too Awesome. I know a lot of people at that base.

How is the pilots for this going to work? Are they going to make the Helicarrier seem like an actual piloted ship? If so, that would be quite amazing. Are they still filming at the Airport or have they moved on? If so to where?

Damn, I'm asking to many questions that won't get answered....
