Will Tom Hiddleston's LOKI Return In THE AVENGERS 2?

The English actor behind Marvel's Mischief-maker and first Avengers baddie Loki, Tom Hiddleston, explains whether we should expect his reprisal in Joss Whedon's 2015 sequel even after the Thor sequel.

Now finished with filming for Thor: The Dark World, Tom Hiddleston's acclaimed portrayal of the God of Mischief, Loki, will have spanned three films by the end of 2013; a record for any villain of Marvel's cinematic universe. And considering Loki caused the big assembly of The Avengers this year, could he appear in Joss Whedon's 2015 sequel? The English actor answers, via MSN:

“I don't know,” he said. “And that really is the honest answer. I know I've been known for obfuscation in other quarters, but I have no idea. I haven't spoken to Joss. He's definitely doing it. So I suspect not, only because I think that probably the audiences are tired of Loki being the bad guy. Maybe the Avengers need somebody else to fight. But I'd love to be part of it again.”

Marvel Studios head producer Kevin Feige hasn't been shy about having Loki appear in several movies like his comic-counterpart. Plus, The Avengers mid-credits teaser did indicate that the notorious Mischief-maker has unfinished business with another big villain, Thanos, who is rumored for the 2015 sequel among other things; though that aftermath could easily transpire in a third film.

However, given that Joss Whedon recently turned in the first outline of the highly-anticipated follow-up to The Avengers, and he's yet to contact Tom, Hiddlestoners don't get your hopes up; especially considering his fate in The Dark World won't be known until next fall. What do you think?

Marvel Studios already describes their highly-anticipated sequel to the No. 3 highest grossing film of all time, “Marvel's The Avengers,” as another “big cinematic event.” And expected to feature the reassembly of iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow & Nick Fury taking on a new unexpected enemy, new additions to the superhero team up of a lifetime are possible.

Expecting reprisals from Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” sequel is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. And set for release May 1, 2015, the film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to the sequel, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

I don't mind him fitting into things in a small capacity but he's right, we need some other powerful villains AKA Ultron.

I agree, While Loki was brilliant and had somewhat of a Hannibal Lecter on-screen presence I think there needs to be the introduction of some new villains. Thanos is obviously going to be there but do we have to settle at just Thanos... I like @marvel72's mention of Ultron :) How that would happen I don't know but I like the idea

I've had about enough of Loki and am ready for something new. He was great and maybe throw him in another movie in the future but let's move on!

It'll depend on what happens with Loki in Thor 2.
I like the idea of Zemo and The Masters of Evil.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Red Skull show up since at the end of Captain America, the tesseract transports him away. Chances are he either ended up on Asgard or wherever Thanos is. Obviously if Red Skull does show up, it won't be Hugo Weaving.

I THINK THANOS WAS MORE OF A SET UP FOR GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY..YOU HONESTLY DON'T WANT TO BE REPETITIVE WITH VILLAINS..AVENGERS 1=VILLAINS FROM SPACE..AVENGERS 2= VILLAINS FROM SPACE AGAIN?? DANGER CAN COME FROM OUR WORLD TOO. ANT MAN MOVIE MEANS HANK PYM, HANK PYM CREATES ULTRON..THERE YA GO....

not trolling, but hear me out! obviously i'm a dc guy, so i haven't read a lot of avengers stuff. but i have to admit as much as i liked hiddleston's performance, i was surprised at his characterization of loki. i mean, am i the only one that thinks of the god of mischief as being a bit more manic? when i used to read the stories i always pictured him as an impish, cackling nutjob, not a slick, cool megalomaniac. more green goblin than lex luthor.

speaking of megalomania... in the early comics, was he ever actually... mischievous? he's evil, sure, but his role in the real stories was to mess up other people's lives, not so much to have plans of his own and not to try to take over the world all the time. that's not really mischief to me. maybe i'm just forgetting, or maybe in the MU he evolved over the decades to take on a new role, but was he ever that way?

avengers villains are lame so its not like they have much to choose from. all they have left of note is Ultron, a transformers villain. and Kang, whos pretty cool and could make for a cool villain.

I don't think Loki will be back because of

A) too much Loki getting tiring ( although Loki is one of my favorite villains and Tom Hiddleston is awesome

B) need new villains to come (only Magneto, Lex Luthor, Scarecrow & Mystique have appeared at least 3 or more times)

C) the teaser artwork below:

@ LEEE To say nothing else came close is foolish. I can understand why you think The Avengers was the best movie but with movies like TDKR, Skyfall, The Hobbit, Argo, Lincoln and others, you have to admit that some of these are "close" to The Avengers. IMO TDKR or Skyfall FTW!!

In terms of continuity and a new term that I'm making up right this minute, "trilogy-cinematic-sense", it would be cool to see Loki again.

But honestly, yeah, he's got the right idea. Loki has been the bad guy twice in a row. Even bad guys become the good guys once in a while. Venom, Magneto, Sabretooth just to name a few.

Someone new please. Let's not make the Avengers like Superman and just keep using Lex Luthor. There are alot of other villains to use. I loved the Avengers and I see some still argue over TDKR... I liked the Avenegers better and personally... Although TDKR was great I still like Batman Begins the best of the 3. You could actually understand him when he talked. LOL!

@AlternateNo4 -

You raise fine points about Loki's characterization. I think earlier Silver Age/Stan Lee-Jack Kirby interpretations of the character depicted him as the mischievous and unhinged trickster driven to evil by his jealousy of Thor.

But Hiddleston's interpretation is more in line with recent characterizations of Loki as a more grounded and tragic figure driven to darkness by deep seated insecurities dealing with his role as an outsider and a need to prove himself. See Robert Lodi's Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers for an example.

Either way, I wouldn't quite equate Hiddleston's Loki to Lex Luthor in terms of characterization. Yes its true that Luthor is secretly jealous of Superman the way Loki is jealous of Thor. But Luthor, especially in his more modern incarnations, is driven by his innate sense of superiority. There's an assuredness and a confidence to the character that is antithetical to Loki's overwhelming inferiority complex.

I think the avengers should take on darkseid, so they could kick his butt up and down the street just to show what up puss he really is.

Then they can take on a real challenge… Such as Ultron :-)

I want to see The Avengers take on Thanos in the sequel, but I wouldn't mind seeing Loki appear at all.

As long as Tom Hiddleston is in the role, he's always welcome to return.

@Jollem LMAO! All those were great, but the top one killed me!
