Director Nicolas Winding Refn Has Moved On From WONDER WOMAN To BATGIRL

Acclaimed Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn was very serious about a Christina Hendricks-led Wonder Woman movie a few years back, but these days it sounds like he's more interested in Batgirl.

Before Gal Gadot cemented herself in the role of Wonder Woman, WB was reportedly open to several different interpretations of the character.

Drive and Neon Demon helmer Nicolas Winding Refn was one of the many to openly discuss his ideas for the character, and would later admit that he met with WB about directing the project after his earlier comments about wanting to see Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks in the role. However, he ended talks after the studio informed him that they would never allow Hendricks to be cast.

These days, Refn is currently promoting Too Old to Die Young, his stylish Amazon Prime miniseries starring Miles Teller. While promoting the project in an interview with Collider, Refn revealed that it's another DC heroine that has his attention these days.

"Regarding everything else, no I mean, projects that have come to me or been approached about, I’ve always decided not to do them in the end.

I love Hollywood. I love glamour and glitz. I love camp. I love vanity, I love egos, I indulge in all that, but the bigger kind of approaches or the offers that have come my way or the interest, in the end, I’ve always just felt that I wasn’t the right person in the end for it. Doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. I mean I would love to do one of those comic book (movies), I mean, me and Batgirl it’s like… we coexist.

It’s just like a lot of people are obsessed with the idea of this is it or this is it. If it comes and it’s the right… and I can do my version of it or I can be part of a contribution to that, great. But if it’s not I’ll just go make something else.
"

And similar to Wonder Woman, Refn teased that if he does get the chance to direct Batgirl, he already has an actress in mind. However, it seems time has casued Refn to play his cards closer to the chest as he refrained from actually revealing his choice this time around.

Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson is currently working on a new script for a Batgirl film after Joss Whedon dropped out of the project in 2017. Over the years, Refn has been attached to Logan's Run, Barbarella, James Bond and Button Man before departing those projects.

I saw Drive again last night. It's such an incredible, personal piece of film-making from a singular & distinct voice. Gosling gives a great subdued performance, the soundtrack's iconic and it looks incredible. A masterpiece.

That said, Only God Forgives was a trash fire and I couldn't even make it through the first episode of Too Old To Die Young. He meanders way too much with his story-telling now; Drive & Bronson both had strong narrative momentum - his new stuff feels like an exercise in tedium.
Also, he's the last guy to ever play by the studio system, so I don't think he'd ever be able to play ball with DC.

Also, Gosling is one of our finest working actors but I feel like people always brush over him. What a decade he's had: Blue Valentine, Drive, The Ides of March, The Place Beyond The Pines, The Big Short, The Nice Guys, La La Land, Blade Runner 2049 & First Man. Most actors would kill to have one of those in such a short span of time, Gosling's had all of them.

Elle Fanning is probably the actress he had in mind I think.

@BlackBeltJones - lmao, Miles Teller's in so much stuff again between this, Top Gun 2 and being on the short-list for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis film (along with Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort and Aaron Taylor Johnson)

@tmp3 - he sort of fell off after Fant4stic. Before that he was everywhere.

@BlackBeltJones - I loved him in Whiplash. Fant4stic sucked, but I still think he's a strong actor; I can see why he's making a resurgence. I remember when he got fired from La La Land and replaced by Gosling lmao

@tmp3 - apparently Teller is a dick lowkey. So I’ve heard. Emma Watson lost out on it too

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah, I've heard that too. Also, good think Watson got replaced by Stone - especially after seeing her in Beauty & The Beast.

Apparently, WB has their eye on Daisy Ridley for the Batgirl role.
Still don't know what Refn was thinking insisting on Hendricks as Wonder Woman (besides the obvious) 🖐🖐

@thomashilfiger - Shouldn't the right person be chosen for the job, regardless of gender? Not saying here that he is the right person.

I love this idea, I think it would fit perfectly in the noir driven world of Reeve's Batman movie.

Nah, he won't get Batgirl.

I don't think he fits DC/WB's style, so-to-speak. Although he would be a good choice, IMO.
