Batman is known for his massive villains library, the likes of The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two Face and Multiple other's come to mind, well it look's like the caped crusader can add another enemy to the long list and whom might it be? well it's Stamps Collectors of course!
At the recent New York Comic Con the debut of the long awaited Batman 75th anniversary collection stamps took place, the comic community was filled with joy but the Batman Stamps caused backlash within the Die hard stamps collectors, the Batman stamps are targeted by collectors whom think Batman and other cultural elements are not worthy of being on a stamp, as Bloomberg BusinessWeek points out that traditional collectors think that the Postal service is doing this crosspomotion as a stunt to geta quick buck from them.
Here's a few quotes from an angry collector:
"They have really ruined the stamp program,” former U.S. Postmaster General Benjamin Bailar told the news site. "They have prostituted it in an effort to make money."
Well, that's not very nice. Anyways collectors like the one above are die hard that think that stamps should only feature important, dates, locations, benchmarks,Icons and other American things that identify us as a nation, but wait a second Batman is an American hero who is 75 years old, In my Opinion that's a big American win right there, While Batman may not be apple pie, he sure is part of American culture as he meets with multiple requirements mentioned by the Bailar above, like Icon, Important date and a benchmark for soceity.
However fear not, these angry die hards that do not recognize the cultural impact of The Dark Knight are among the minority, as the US postal Office told Bloomberg BusinessWeek that the Batman Stamps are selling very well and are attracting multiple collectors.
Here's a quote from USPS:
“You’ve got people who are fans of an icon that collect Batman memorabilia,” USPS spokesman Mark Saunders said. “It’s a great opportunity to reach out to younger audiences, more people, to make stamps more relevant to everyone.”
I hope people can understand that Batman is part and a big one of american culture and an Icon for america and the world.
