Christian Bale Says The Dark Knight Rises Is "The End Of That Batman Era"

Both Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan have previously claimed that The Dark Knight Rises will be their last Batman movie, but the former has once again spoken out about hanging up the cape and cowl for the last time.

Ace Showbiz point out a recent interview by the Philippine Daily Inquirer in which Christian Bale shared his thoughts on saying goodbye to the role of Batman for the final time now that filming on The Dark Knight Rises has concluded. Both the star and director Christopher Nolan have stated on numerous occasions in the past that this will be their final movie starring the Caped Crusader. However, with anticipation at an all time high after the release of a new batch of photos and details in Empire magazine, the desire to see them both return for more installments in the franchise is sure to continue growing.

Here's what the British actor had to say on the end of his time as the iconic DC superhero.

"I wrapped [up The Dark Knight Rises] a few days ago so that will be the last time I'm taking that cowl off. I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done. Everything's finished. It's me and [director] Chris Nolan - that will be the end of that Batman era."

Sounds very final indeed. However, with The Dark Knight having taken over £1 billion at the worldwide box office, will a similar performance in 2012 result in Warner Bros. attempting to lure both Nolan and Bale back for a fourth movie? With so much talk of this being the last, is that even a possibility? Sound off with your thoughts below.

STARRING:

Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman
Michael Caine as Alfred
Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Tom Hardy as Bane
Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake
Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate
Josh Pence as Ra's Al Ghul

RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2012

Unless Batman's killed off at the end (which I hope to God doesn't happen), I'd love to see more Nolan/Bale films.

its the end for them but its not the end of Batman. WB going to make more Batman movies not matter what since the character makes them money.

Ra's Al Ghul*Scarecrow*Falcone*Joker*Two-face*Maroni*Bane*Catwoman*Talia(maybe)

... that's a solid list of villains for 3 films

leave the rest for the next director/new Batman and move on. NO MORE ORIGINS again, just move on like Batman already existed.

Riddler, Freeze, Penguin, Ivy, Mad Hatter, Ventriloquist, Clayface, Killer Croc, Firefly, etc there are plenty more to choose from

Nolan and Bale are done but there will most likely be more Bat-films.

I'd rather they not reboot Batman until 2017/2018 at the earliest, WB needs to focus on other characters for the next few years.
Unless they want to do Batman Beyond or Dark Knight Returns. Both need to be made into live action films.

This will be the end of the Nolan envisioned Batman. Time for someone to reimagine Batman and leave this What If alone.

Money talks so who knows...but even if they are done I hope they come back years from now and do another movie with an Old Batman, retired and forced to come back one last time. I hate it cuz it feels like this is such a chore for them. I assume Nolan will continue to direct and Bale will continue to act so why close the book forever?

I content that Batman IS NOT the sum total of the villains in his life.

If his villains are the focal point in Bat-films, they'll end up degenerating like the first four.

The focus of ANY Bat-film needs to be Bruce Wayne-centric
or the film will fray apart.

The question to ask is: What needs to happen in Bruce's life to mature him to the next level of character and social worth?

The story of Batman is a story of self-discovery ultimately.

WB can go the Superman Returns/Incredible Hulk route,a kinda/sorta sequel of a previously established franchise but not really

Awesome Batman trilogy that covered a lot of was Bruce Wayne is all about.

They could do Batman Beyond, Dick Grayson as Batman, Batgirl, Nightwing so it's by no means the end.

I agree on leaving it be for a few years, let these movies retain their dignity and place. They raised the bar by making comic book movies serious, (I still enjoyed Iron Man a little more just from an excitement POV) but Nolan's Bat-universe really did something special for the genre. Let DC inject the same care into their other franchises. That can be DC's thing over marvel. Quality over quantity.

However since it does seem that there is going to be some kind of physical disaster in this new batflick, I work over by the queensburough bridge (59th street bridge) and i saw some of the filming over there i think 2 weeks ago, that it looks like maybe some kind of earthquake or something devastated gotham. It would be cool to see at like the end of the movie Wayne Enterprises approaching the city officials and offering whatever he can to help rebuild Gotham only for them to say contracts for the reconstruction of the city have already been awarded to Lex Luthor Incorporated of Metropolis.... Id probably cream in my pants.

The Nolan/Bale Batman was the best so far. It seems to be ending on a positive note. The next time I see Batman on the Silver Screen, I want to see him standing next to Superman.

Thank you Nolan, now I hope we're set for the next ten years with the Man of Steel trilogy. Please WB/DC, you [frick]ed up on Green Lantern but made a masterpiece with Batman. High hopes :)

Coming from a Marvel fanboy :)

They better give Batman at least a fifeteen year break if they are not going to continue with Nolan's continuity and if TDKR is good. If TDKR ends up being bad (I highly doubt that) then I would be more willing to watch a rebbot. I do not support reboots that come to early. I'm not a fan of the Batman Beyond idea either. I might rent the Batman Beyond film if I here it is good otherwise I will wait for it to air on tv. Same if it is rebooted to early.

batman won't die, crime needs batman.
everyone says Batman Beyond, 1 of 3 things will happen.

bane will mess up batman so bad that he can't fight anymore.

batman and catwoman get married and quit, the end.

we never saw Ra's al Ghul die in BB. we saw a train crash. batman uses Lazarus pit and stays young and healthy. (nolan just done with batman)

BUT if this makes enough money they'll make another.

@Superman9859: Yeah, I don't like my Batman realistic either. I would prefer a Batman that combats against fear gas, microwave emitters, and earthquake machines while using gadgets that allow him to do things like turn an ordinary phone into a sonar device without physically touching it, stiffen his cape so he can glide on it, and hold the wait of several armed men on a single cable. Oh wait!
golden123
golden123 - 11/26/2011, 1:59 PM
@dmm5: WB/DC needs to wait to see how this Superman lawsuit ends up before they can begin to think of a trilogy. One step at a time.
