Cinematographer Wally Pfister Not Afraid To Fail With THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Besides the The Dark Knight Rises being Nolan's last Batman film, it will also be the last time that Wally Pfister will be Nolan's cinematographer. Pfister has worked with Nolan since Momento, and has decided to spread his wings and become a director as well. He'll be helming a thriller, which might begin filming in the fall or winter of this year. Nolan will be on board as a producer.

When Pfister was asked if he'll pull double duties as both a cinematographer and director for his own film, he responded: “Hell no. All I care about right now is screenplay and performance. … The look is not my focus. I don’t want to be micromanaging how someone lights the film. I’m looking for a cinematographer whose style I like and understand. And they’ve got to be fast. I’m going to do to that cinematographer what [Christopher] Nolan has done to me for the last 13 years.”

While collaborating with Nolan for the past thirteen years Pfister won an Oscar for Inception, but his biggest contribution might be his suggestion that Christian Bale was a good choice for Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Pfister recalled that during post-production on Insomnia, he mentioned to Nolan that Bale was “wonderful” in Laurel Canyon, and suggested that the director and actor meet. “They did, clearly,” Pfister said. - THR

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

Stay away from Marvel films pfister. That's the best advice you can get. They don't need more fuel to their egos and the hardcore marvelite fanbase.

Pfister is amazing. Sounds like a pretty smart dude who knows his shit too. And I agree @Intruder, it would be great for him to work on a Marvel film as well.

TDKR review embargo is supposed to be lifted this Friday....

Early tweets that have quickly been taken down say "it is a masterpiece."

July 20 is way too far away.

It's funny to hear all you people say you want Wally to direct a Marvel movie. I remember him stating in an interview that he doesn't like superhero movies and was happy to do Inception in between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The only reason he is involved with those movies is because of Nolan and he likes his vision of Batman. There's no way in hell he's going to be touching a Marvel movie once he's directing. Not even with a ten foot pole.

Who cares if Pfister is more responsible for the art direction than Nolan. Who cares if Goyer is more responsible for the writing than Nolan and who cares if Heath's performance is responsible for the massive success of TDK. Great teams result in great movies. If all you care about is taking Nolan down a peg, I'm sure he would be the first to admit that he surrounds himself with great talent to make his work that much better.

I find it funny that one second all you marvelites hate Nolan but then everyone wants his ceinomatographer to direct a marvel film? So you hate Nolan so much but want his long-time partner to direct a marvel film? hmm seems like you really want Nolan. Also You guys are aware that he had nothing to do with the script right?

lol If you really think Pfister is gonna direct an action comedy, a marvel studio film, then you are sadly mistaken.

Hopefully other studios get the rights to some characters before Marvel Studios gets them.

I can defintely see Pfister making a kick *ss, mind bender, split personality (Fight Night/Memento) Moon Knight film. Or even a sci-fi heavy Fantastic Four film.

The Dark Knight Rises is not going to be miserable, it's actually Nolan we're talking about here, a creative filmmaker who has already given us two successful Batman movies and soon the third in addition to Inception.
