Clayface BTS Photos Reveal Gnarly Practical "Melting" Matt Hagen As DCU Movie Crosses $90M Worldwide

Some horrifying new behind-the-scenes photos reveal how Clayface brought Matt Hagen's gruesome melting scene to life, as the DCU horror movie passes $90 million at the worldwide box office.

Some new behind-the-scenes photos from Clayface have been revealed, courtesy of Tom Rhys Harries' stunt double, Dale White. In them, we see how the final confrontation between Matt Hagen and Dr. Caitlin Corr was created, including a practical Clayface...puddle?

After being tased by the scientist, Matt started falling apart, only to seemingly be finished off for good when Corr deactivated the nanobots in his bloodstream. Of course, the movie later reveals he survived their run-in, though his true face had become that of a hideous monster.

While Matt's melting scene appeared to be largely CGI, we see here that a practical stand-in was created; given that White shared the photo, it's possible he was inside the "suit."

On the box office front, Clayface has now passed $90.6 million at the worldwide box office. The R-rated body horror has benefited from a solid day-to-day hold, despite its relatively modest first and second weekends in theaters.

Exhibitor Relations Co. is still arguing that Clayface is performing poorly, though, writing that the movie "isn't long for this box office world" after it suffered a -44% drop on Tuesday compared to the week before. In comparison, "no other film in the top five dropped more than -33%."

While arguments continue about whether Clayface should be judged as a comic book or horror movie, its $90 million haul places it well above Kraven the Hunter ($62 million), but below Madame Web ($100 million), Supergirl ($126 million), and Morbius ($167 million). It was, however, considerably cheaper to produce than all of them.

It's worth noting that Clayface has beaten The Substance ($77 million), though its production budget was significantly lower ($18 million vs. $44 million).

Check out these new behind-the-scenes photos from the DCU movie in the Instagram gallery below.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

This movie will flop at worst or barely break even at best and people will still shill for Gunn and the DCU. What spell does this man have on people?

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@vectorsigma - you're dreaming if you believe Paramount will continue his DOWNWARD SPIRAL with Gunn. Safran is already trying to get hired at Netflix, Millie Alcock & David Corenswet contracts are UP! They ONLY signed for 3 films, Diaperman 2025, Supergirl & MOT. The reason why she DELETED everything Supergirl from her social media😂😂😂 Either you live under a rock or just "HOPING" but non of that matters. Gunn/Safran contracts set to EXPIRE April 2027...meaning in Hollywood terms..YOU'RE FIRE!!!!!😂🤣🤣🤣
Now let COPE-A-MANIA BEGIN!😂😂😂😂😂

Even if this HAD been a critical and commercial success, I don't think DC/Warners possess the business acumen to jump on it.

You know, fast-track a sequel that included other villains or (some version of) Batman or DC hero.

They'd have just left it there to gather dust while they had committee meetings, or whatever it is they do behind closed doors.

@bobevanz - Which 'Batman' could they have build on it's success with?

Batman A, whose already delayed till February 18, 2028?

Batman B, who doesn't exist, but might exist, might have a script-outline, might be an aspect of Gunn's fevered imagination? But definitely won't be competing with current Batman A any time soon?

"While arguments continue about whether Clayface should be judged as a comic book or horror movie" - herein lies the problem, a comic book universe makes movies that people do not know that they are comic book movies. Stop making movies about B characters or movies about comic book villains that have nothing to do with the super hero they are known for.

@tluciotti74 -
I believe that behind-the-scenes they probably have a contract or something that accidentally gave Matt Reeves live-action movie exclusivity regarding Batman back when The Batman Part II was scheduled for release in October 2025.

I expect that until The Batman Part II releases they are not going to have Batman included in anything. They may have Thomas Wayne or potentially a character they'll label as 'Bruce' or 'Mr Wayne' in a post-credit of Superman: Man of Tomorrow though.

Good to see Clayface doing relatively well at the box office by holding day to day essentially…

I do however expect a somewhat big drop this weekend given we have big blockbusters like Ramayana Part 1 & Godzilla Minus Zero coming out , smaller fare like I Play Rocky & Wild Horse Nine aswell as animation in The Cat in The Hat but if it can survive that then i think it should be on stable consistent ground to an extent.

The movie has been performing like a usual horror film if not a bit better which is how it was marketed thus it makes sense imo.

Anyway , i still need to check it out and will likely do so at home at this point!!.

Gunns DCU(Dead Cinematic Universe) is coming to an END APRIL 2027...😂🤣🤣
His 3 DCU Films made a total of $740 Million Dollars.
His Diaperman & Supergirl looks RIDICULOUS next to MOS, BvS, on HBO MAX. This GOOFY, Wacky DCU era is coming to an ABRUPT END!
Let COPE-A-MANIA BEGIN!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

This will never not be a stupid [frick]ing thing to release in the middle rolling out the limp dick universe that is the DCU.

Even if it made $500M it wouldn't move the needle one bit towards a DC COMICS UNIVERSE on screen.

NO BATMAN
NO WONDER WOMAN
SUPERMID SUPERMAN
ANCILLARY DOGSHIT

Great job, James Gunn at this rate you'll break a billion at the box office in 2043

DC released two movies this year that, combined with last years Superman, still couldn’t outgross Spider-Man’s opening weekend. That’s how far down in the gutter we are

Why is Josh treating Jeff as the sole authority consensus regarding the box office performance of Clayface? Is Jeff’s take reflective of the majority consensus? Otherwise it’s odd to continually single out one box office analyst alone unless you are trying to push a narrative
