James Gunn Explains How Clayface Fits Into the DCU After Body Horror Trailer Reveal

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has explained how a movie like Clayface fits into the wider DCU, pointing to the comics as proof that this franchise can tell all manner of unique stories.

The first trailer for Clayface was released earlier this week, and it's clearly a very different kind of comic book movie. Set in Gotham City before the events of Superman, we're getting a full-blown body-horror explanation for how this member of Batman's rogues' gallery came to be.

Alternatively, the movie may explain how Matt Hagen's apparent successor, the monstrous Clayface, last seen dying at Frankenstein's hands in Creature Commandos, was created after the scarred actor presumably served as a guinea pig.

We'll see, but DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has now taken to Instagram to share some insights into Clayface's place in the wider DCU. He also elaborates on the comics that have inspired his decision to greenlight projects like this one.

"Since the release of the Clayface trailer people have asked me, 'How is that going to work? One universe, different feels and genres?'" Gunn wrote. "My answer is just like in the comics where different creative voices and visions inspire each project."

"Each story has purpose within itself, outside of all others," the Man of Tomorrow helmer continued. "But another part of the fun can be when seemingly disparate strands come together in an elegant way."

Is Gunn hinting at his plans for the DCU with the artwork shared in his post? We wouldn't bank on it. The filmmaker is using them to illustrate how seemingly disparate genres can come together in the world of comics, whether it's Batman meeting Elmer Fudd or Superman teaming up with Sgt. Rock.

So, while Clayface may seem like an odd fit for a world David Corenswet's Man of Steel and the Justice Gang call home, Gunn is instead taking full advantage of the DC Universe's uniqueness to tell a vast array of stories.

The filmmaker will, however, have to brace himself for fans going into this movie expecting an appearance from Batman or something that sets up The Brave and the Bold

DC Studios' first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain.

Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC. The film is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

Watkins' creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris, visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton, costume designer Keith Madden, and casting director Lucy Bevan.

Clayface opens in theaters in North America on October 23 and internationally beginning on October 21.

Sounds good and exactly what Gunn should be doing imo because as he illustrates , the comics have done different genres & feels in one universe for decades…

Anyway , i am intrigued by Clayface so hope it turns out well!!.

“How is that going to work? One universe, different feels and genres?'"

Were people actually asking this?

@MisterBones - Lol look at the comment section here. People are having a hard time with it not being some action/comedy like 90% of other comic book movies.

The trailer looked terrible I mean cheap I heard it's something like an $80 million budget

It'd be kind of neat if there's a shadowy glimpse of Batman in the distance at some point (the role isn't cast yet, at least publicly, so simply a silhouette would be cool).

So, I'm all for different genres and feels, that's great. But there seems to be a HUGE disconnect between what we saw in Creature Commandos and what we're seeing here.

I'm fine with a clayface being a body horror movie, but you have to do alot of work to explain how he ends up sitting on a couch worried about lesbians.

The explanation shouldn't be a hand wavy "different tone" because you're actively changing what's supposedly the same character.

You can put Peacemaker in a serious movie without without changing who the character is. You can't take a grounded in reality character and make him a cartoon, and I dont mean the medium they are portrayed in.

@SATW42 - true but we don’t have any confirmation that this is even the same Clayface tbh

There are multiple ones in the comics so this Matt Hagen one and the CC one could be different people.

@TheVisionary25 - than don't needlessly complicate it by having the same actor portray both of them.

@SATW42 - he’s not

This Clayface is played by Tom Rhys Harries while the CC one was voiced by Alan Tudyk.

Okay. Gunn is giving us Superman and Supergirl to lead his new DCU. Sounds fantastic.

Next he could have given us the greatness of Batman, Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Flash.

But he gives us Clayface, Rick Flagg Sr, "All about replacement" Lanterns, and sh!ttty Peacemaker season 2.

PLUS he gave us a deep introspective epic video of Krypto whizzing on Superman on a newspaper.

DCFU V2 indeed.

I trust Mike Flanagan. Releasing a body horror DC movie the week before Halloween is absolutely the best move. This has a modest budget which should break even by November. Some people live under a rock or want to pretend things are bad just to stand out. I'll take the big swings from the DCU over current MCU all day.

It only needs 100m to break even BTW. Let the games begin!
