EDIT. Which DC/ MARVEL Character Has The Best Rogue's Gallery.

Behind every good hero there is an even better villain. But out of the heroes from the two powerhouse comic book publisher, DC and Marvel, which hero has the best rouges gallery?

10. GREEN LANTERN.

The Green Lantern Corp. has faced countless intergalactic threats but their biggest enemy is often themselves. The numerous incarnations of the Green Lantern have often walked the thin line between hero and villain, yet none of them can compare to Hal Jordan’s primary antagonist. Sinestro was said to be the best of all the Green Lantern’s making his transformation into an enemy even more daunting. Unlike the traditional hero and villain complex, where the black and white is clear, the Lanterns have faced multiple threats due to their own establishment. These shades of grey arise from the Lantern institution which many of the ring bearer’s see to be unfit. The multiple Lantern Corp’s. often engage in battle, distracting the Green Lantern’s from protecting their sectors. The parasite known as Parallax could possibly be titled the greatest of all enemies as it is born out of fear and has inhabited the likes of Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner.

9. IRON MAN.

Having the smug, playboy personality of Tony Stark is bound to ruffle a few feathers. Whether they are after his wealth or his technology, Iron Man has accumulated a fair few foes in the past decades. One thing that does set Tony Stark’s enemies apart is their internationality. We have the Russian Anton Vanko (Whiplash) and The Mandarin, Iron Man’s primary adversary. Stark’s villains are truly interesting characters; the majority of them have their roots in politics, international affairs or multinational business, something unique to Iron Man.

8. THOR.

It must not be easy being Thor! Not only has he earth to protect, home of his beloved Jane Foster, he also must contend with the numerous threats that lurk within the Nine Realms. Thor has faced foes on Midgard, Asgard and even Hell, but who are his deadliest adversaries? Enchantress has proven to be a thorn in the side on multiple occasions with her command of magic; yet, it is her seductive nature that makes the character compelling to Thor, Loki and many other Asgardians. Sutur the fire demons exceptional power would make you think that he is Thor’s greatest enemy but that title belongs to his brother Loki. The God of Mischief is undoubtedly Thor’s primary villain having faced him countless times but their brotherly relationship means that the conflict is hindered by this bond.

7. CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Captain America may be the product of World War Two propaganda but the character is timeless. That means most of his villains must be too. Red Skull, the personification of Nazi German, the arch typical villain was resented by generations. Many of Captain America’s villains represent pure evil, whether it is Baron Zemo or MODOK. Despite this, one antagonist presents Cap with an inner emotional battle. Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier: one time, comrade, foe, ally and friend, Captain America often struggles with defeating Bucky, who serves as a constant reminder of Cap’s past life and of his failures.

6. SUPERMAN.

Superman is sometimes criticised for being slightly bland, lacking the compelling emotional drama that drives human superheroes. His array of villains is the assuredly quite the opposite. Superman’s status as Justice League godfather and cultural icon attracts the weird and wonderful offerings from the DC Universe. With the likes of Toyman, Mister Mxyzptlk and Prankster on his case, Supes sure has some colourful characters to contend with. Superman is also literally his own worst enemy at times; well that is Bizzaro of course. Despite being ‘The Last Son of Kyrpton,’ his birth planet sure comes to haunt him quite a lot. Zod and Doomsday have proven to be deadly, even killing Superman in the acclaimed story detailing exactly that! One villain synonymous with Superman and rightly so is Lex Luthor. The scheming CEO does not radiate Kryptonite, nor is he an advanced alien form from Colu, he simply has a cunningness and a wit unique to his bald head. Lex has navigated the worlds of politics, the military, science and business to destroy Superman yet his futile attempts prevent him from rarely harming the Man of Steel.

5. X-MEN.

The merry band of mutant misfits known as the X-men has encountered a foray of foes. The problem with having the X gene is that not everyone is going to agree with the wise, wheelchair warrior, Charles Xavier’s dream of humanity and mutants holding hands in matrimony. This division of interest has spawned some of Cyclops and friends most lethal adversaries, notably Magneto and The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Would it have been unfair to count the likes of Wolverine and Gambit as singular characters? Probably not as each member of the colourfully costumed X-Men have villains that stretch beyond the reach of Jean Grey’s telepathy. Wolverine regularly tussles with Sabretooth and Stryker, as well as figures from his adventures in the war, Japan and even in his mysterious past. Jean Grey and Cyclops are the object of attraction of Mister Sinister and Storm has to deal with the Shadow King and… Claustrophobia! Yet combined, the X-Men have a wide range of enemies that pose an apocalyptic (pun intended) threat.
4. THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

The Fantastic Four, the awkward cousin of the Marvel Universe that have stuck around since their formation in the sixties, representing a good ol’ family bond. Marvel’s ‘First Family’ may be getting the cold shoulder from the very publishing house where they have spent the last fifty years fighting Doom Bots and reciting catchphrases like an old fashioned radio host, but that has not stopped them from facing some truly amazing villains. The Fantastic Four have defeated every who’s who of the Marvel villain’s club at one point or another. I am talking Kang the Conqueror, Namor, Puppet Master, Mole Man, Annihilus and who could not be impressed with the almighty Galactus featuring as a main staple in their repertoire of rogues. One name notably absent from that line up is Doctor Doom, the Marvel equivalent of The Joker? Doom has an army of robots, a Nobel Prize worthy knowledge of science, international immunity and his own country, certainly a uniqueness that diversifies him from other mainstream villains. Doom has proven countlessly to be a powerful foe, not just for the Fantastic Four, but the Marvel Universe at large.

3. THE FLASH.

It is not often that The Flash does not win a race but in this instance he will have to contend with third prize. The Flash or Flashes (?) have a rogue gallery that puts other heroes to shame. The rogue gallery creatively called ‘The Rogues’ has given membership cards to Captain Cold, Heat wave, Mirror Master, The Pied Piper, Captain Boomerang and The Trickster. Apart from an affinity for alliteration, each member of The Rogues present a challenge that speed alone cannot solve, leaving The Flash to come up with invent ways to stop them. Perhaps the strangest of all is Gorilla Grodd, with an intellect almost as big as him; Grodd is a villain that can only exist within the realms of The Flash. Although The Flash has a number of comic book camp foes, he also has more serious contenders to deal with. Despite the hooky name, Professor Zoom/Reverse Flash has abilities that match The Flash, making his defeat a perilous task. The speedster is not be reckoned with has caused damage that other another heroes nemesis may struggle to surpass, which is of course destabilising the entire DC Universe!

2. SPIDER-MAN.

Flying the flag for the Marvel Universe is Spider-Man and all the evil beings that have tried to squash him like a bug. Lizard, Rhino and Vulture make it seem like Spider-Man is after the characters of the Jungle Book, but those three are amongst a long list of Spidey haters. Kraven the Hunter, Electro, Shocker, Scorpion, Sand Man, Hobgoblin and Hydro Man feature prominently in Spider-Man’s weekly adventures. The Venom symbiote is not the new black as far as Peter Parker is concerned as the suit has engulfed and changed various people in Spider-man’s life, including him, turning them into the worst versions of themselves. Doctor Octopus with his mechanical tentacles was once regarded as Spider-Man’s primary adversary. To top it off, he is also the leader of the Spider-Man fan club known as The Sinister Six. If there is ever one comic book villain to get one up on his enemy it is The Green Goblin. Forget your Jason Todd, Green Goblin is a trendsetter for killing loved ones having been responsible for the death of Peter Parker’s high school sweetheart and first love, Gwen Stacey. This was a real turning point for Spider-Man, no longer was he fighting in just the name of Uncle Ben, he now had two legacies to protect, quite a task for the web crawling hero.

1. BATMAN.

Was their ever any doubt? Ever since the death of his parents, Batman has been battling an evil inside him that has cumulated in his desire to tackle the crime spree that runs through the veins of Gotham city. Batman has faced an overwhelming variety of characters, from a coin tossing politician, a cat like jewel thief, a steroid fuelled back breaker, a shooter with a dead certain shot, a pyromaniac bug, the deadliest assassin alive, a psychiatrist turned crazy sidekick, a loving husband with a cold touch and the best umbrella wielding character since Mary Poppins. Batman has that many villains that he displays them in a gallery, known as Arkham Asylum. Yet, amongst all the strange goings on in Arkham, one prisoner prevails as the epitome of lunacy. The Joker, the polar opposite of Batman’s straight lace, no nonsense regime is perhaps the greatest comic book villain. His twisted psyche and ruthless criminal activity, accompanied by his showmanship, cement him as Batman’s hardest to overthrow adversary. The killing of former Robin protégée Jason Todd is one of many schemes that result in The Joker being the most insane and brilliant of Batman’s rogues… sorry Batmite.

With the DC and Marvel universe's being so vast, many fan favourite characters missed out on the list. Would you have picked with The Hulk for Abomination and The Absorbing Man? Or Aquaman for Black Mantra and Ocean Master? Or maybe even Daredevil for enemies Bullseye and Kingpin? Let me know your ideal list below.

I knew the top pick would be between Bats, Spidey, and Flash. They have the greatest rogue galleries in all of comics... In my opinion at least.

you got number 1 and 2 right straight up. but i wont say one is better than the other. they both have so many. batman and spiderman are the top of the game.

xmen should probably be number 3.

i dont think ironman should even be on the top 10 though. hulk should probably be on the list before him.

Pre-Flashpoint and Injustice Sinestro would have been a better villain but nowadays he's become a generic antihero.

Spidey and Batman as top two, right on -- but Iron Man has doodly-squat for villains. Even I know that.
His arch enemy is a racial caricature for crying out loud.
DEVLIN712
DEVLIN712 - 3/15/2015, 1:26 PM
Then again, who is still a villain?
Lex, Captain Cold, Sinestro, Red Hood, Doc Ock, Magneto, Taskmaster, Harley Quinn, the Red Lanterns, Deadshot, Black Adam, all of the Suicide Squad. All antiheroes/good guys.

Glad Superman is on this list though. Brainiac, Darkseid, Luthor, Metallo, Bizarro ... his villains are great

Did try to add pictures but you know how this site can be sometimes! As for the Iron Man debate, I think his villains erarn a spot on the list for their uniqueness, only Tony Stark could battle CEOS and high flying business men and politicians.

Fantastic 4 above Superman and X-Men? Umm.....no. Several of the villains you listed for them are also villains for other heroes, so I don't think those should count. Galactus, imo, is just stupid, one of those campy comic villains that I personally can't take seriously. Dr. Doom is their only serious foe, and that shouldn't get them in the top five. Maybe not even top ten. Superman has Lex Luthor, Zod, Doomsday, Brainiac, Metallo, Darkseid. And when you add his more campy foes like Bizarro and Mr. Mztlplk (my spelling is probably wrong), he definitely should at least be #4, and personally I would put him above Flash at #3. X-Men foes don't impress me that much, but they should be above F4.

I will say that unfortunately, despite being one of the most iconic heroes of all and one of my favorites and a part of the Trinity, Wonder Woman has an unusually weak rogues gallery. A better lineup of foes would do so much for that character.

I say this as a staunch DC fan, who hates Marvel:

Dr Doom is the best villain in the history of comics. And that's along side the greats like Luthor and Joker and Ra's Al Ghul.

Part of being a great villain (or character overall), is recognizability. DC knows that, and has worked hard to make their villains as iconic as their heroes.

Marvel, on the other hand, aside from Doom, and admitted exceptions such as Spidey's villains, King Pin, and a few others, are basically no-shows. And the Almighty Marvel Cinematic Universe has done very little to improve that.

In a decade, and 10 movies, we've gotten only one recognizable villain, in the form of Loki.

This article above mentions Iron Man on the list. What a joke; ask the casual movie-goer who any of the villains from the IM movies were, and 99% of them won't be able to tell you.

Here you have Avengers all over everything, and as individual characters, most of them don't have recognizable villains. Who are Black Widow's villains? Or Hawkeye's? Or Hulk's?

For all the love that GOTG got, nobody remembers Ronan the Accuser. He was a stupid character, that in the end was easily subdued by a group of idiots. They've only been teasing Thanos for the past few years. There's nothing about him that feels like a true threat at this point.

All Marvel has shown us is a bunch of mid-carders thus far. Ultron is the only true threat they will have faced thus far.

Marvel is about to release Black Panther (whom I actually like), but who are his villains? They're releasing Captain Marvel, but who are her villains?

The X-Men are not much better. True, they do have some interesting villains, but they've spent the past decade and a half on Magneto and Mystique. After 15 years, they are just getting around to Apocalypse and Deadpool. Sinister is MIA, and characters like Juggernaut, Blob, Shaw, etc--all characters that historically proved to be major problems for the X-Men, were poorly used and/or underrepresented.

Hopefully that will change with the upcoming Apocalypse movie, but as I said, that's more than a decade in the making.

It's only characters like Spidey that have showcased his top villains, in practically every film. Major villains that truly give Spidey a run for his money. That's why I for one, was excited at the prospect of a Sinister 6 movie.

In the meantime, DC has given us major villains with practically every outing. They are even giving us an entire movie dedicated to villains.

Diane, Iron Man has absolutely no business being on this list, but with that said I have little problem with the the other 9 selections. Batman and Spiderman sure do have some damn fine villains!

I think for Marvel, Iron Man, Thor and Spiderman have the best villains. And for DC, Bats, Flash and GL have the best villains. But that's just my opinion.

Nice article! Gotta agree with Batman and Spider-man as the top 2. Don't have a strong opinion after that.

Batman and Spider-Man are interchangeable in the top spot. It all depends on who's writing with those galleries. I would put the X-Men ahead of Flash, as Mister Sinister, Apocalypse, Magneto, Juggernaut, Black Tom Cassidy, Stryker, and various others make them better than the Rogues.

Iron Man...I'm not sure if I'd include him on this list, as most of his villains are pretty terrible, and GL should definitely be ahead of him, if for no more reason than Sinestro, who's arguably one of DC's top 5 villains overall.

Now, just for fun...my favourite villains:

1. Kingpin
2. The Joker
3. Magneto
4. Dr. Doom
5. Carnage Symbiote
6. Lex Luthor
7. The Leader
8. Sinestro
9. Galactus
10. Thanos

What I find most interesting about Batman, Spider-Man and the X-Men's Rogues Galleries is they not only have quality, they have quantity. And for that reason I think it makes the most sense for these characters to have live-action TV series, especially Spider-Man and X-Men.

I feel like one of the biggest problems/challenges with Spider-Man and X-Men movies is finding a good balance of character development and story inclusion with such large rosters of characters. It's difficult to give each & every character their due, fair scene/story time and still advance & tell a good story in a single movie. With X-Men movies, Wolverine had two solo movies, but was still the main character in the X-Men movies, except for First Class. With Spider-Man movies, Spider-Man 3 and tASM2's biggest problem was trying to include too many villains and was a disservice to both the villains and the story.

A live-action TV series for Spider-Man and/or the X-Men would alleviate this issue because there would be considerably more time for more characters and more stories. It makes so much more sense than not, it's mindbottling neither has happened. Think about it, a 10-24 episode season is 10-24 hours, that's plenty of time to give more characters, more development and more story-arcs. Even one 10-episode season is more time for more characters than a movie trilogy.
Sure, movies have more potential to make big money, but if you invest good money to make a good quality X-Men or Spider-Man live-action TV series on Fox or ABC, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't be profitable. I'd be willing to bet if you give someone like Joss Whedon an HBO-size budget for a 10-16 episode Astonishing X-Men live-action TV series on FOX or FX, it'd have good-great ratings and make good-great money.

I'm late to the party, but I love lists such as this. Fun, fun!

My list (with some cheating involved):

1. Batman, Spider-Man (I can't conceivably choose between the two they are both that good)
2. Superman (Lex Luthor in my mind goes a long way. Add in others such as Brainiac, Darkseid, and Doomsday amongst many underrated gems like Livewire and you get a solid 2nd place finish)
3. X-Men (Magneto! Apocalypse! Sinister!)
4. Fantastic Four (Dr. Doom enough said.)
5. The Flash (The Rogues, Reverse Flash, Weather Wizard *who's underrated as well*, great villains)
6. Daredevil (Not a big rogues gallery but quality always makes up for quantity. Kingpin and Bullseye are both incredible.)
7. Green Lantern (Sinestro, Star Sapphire *I'm hoping they eventually tell her story in film* Are you listening Warnerbros/DC?)
8. Captain America (Red Skull alone puts him in the top 10. Add in Sin, Crossbones and the Barons and you have a rogues gallery not to be trifled with.)
9. Thor (It actually pains me to place Thor at nine. That's how good these others are. Loki, the Enchantress *When's she gonna appear Marvel?*)

Very strange picks regarding the three per hero.

Thor's best rogues are Loki, Surtur, Hela, Midgard Serpent, Malekith.
