Full List Of BAFTA 2020 Winners Revealed; Joaquin Phoenix Wins For JOKER But Blasts Lack Of Diversity

The winners of this year's BAFTAs have been revealed, and while it was once again a good night for Joker, star Joaquin Phoenix took the opportunity to criticize the awards for a lack of diversity...

Last night, the BAFTAs took place in London, England, and with the Academy Awards just one week away, all eyes were on this ceremony just to see what bearing it might have for the Oscars. Time will tell on that front, but Sam Mendes' 1917 once again dominated proceedings (you can read our review of the World War I movie by clicking here).

However, Joker still got plenty of attention and the DC Comics adaptation ended up walking away with another "Best Actor" award for the Clown Prince of Crime himself, Joaquin Phoenix.

Unexpectedly, Phoenix used his acceptance speech as a chance to criticise the BAFTAs for not better representing diverse actors and filmmakers, something they've often come under fire for.

"I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here," he says in the video above. "I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry, and in ways that we benefit from."

I really dont see the issue here. Granted, ive seen this with the year of straight outta compton and creed where the former was almost completely missing from awards and the latter was represented by the only white guy, i just dont see what couldve changed here. Giving something to parasite maybe but even then thats more about issues with foreign language rather than race.

@Origame - Yeah you argue this all the time even when it's explained to you. Try harder.

@Tonic24k - dude this isnt even a representation issue. I already pointed out a time of actual problematic issues that have happened with minorities concerning awards. Are you gonna point out a film about minorities that should have won? Because unless you do you have no leg to stand on here, and i addressed parasite already fyi.

Also, all you've argued previously is that we should bend over backwards to include diversity. You clearly dont care about movies and just see them as social political messages, so excuse me if i have no interest in listening to what you have to say.

@Origame - Diversity, representation, inclusion...it all goes hand in hand. But keep trying to tell me what it's not. That just goes to show even more how you're not getting it.

@TheJustinHammer - A hooter birthday party.

@Origame - Let’s see - This year we had “The Farewell”, “Parasite”, “Just Mercy”, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco”, “Dolemite is My Name”, JLo in Hustlers. Multiple women directors who WAY outperformed Tarantino. (Hereof, Wang, Heller) Those are all just off the top of my head.

@TheJustinHammer - well you're right that no one listens to me. Otherwise they'd know how to argue against my response instead of giving petty insults.

@Tonic24k - yes. I dont get why we should be just giving out awards purely based on skin color. Too bad you can't explain that.

@SerKurtWagner - thank you. I dont get why its so hard for everyone to just explain their points with actual evidence.

Now as for your points, I'll give you just mercy and tlbmisf. I never heard of the latter but it does look good. And the former was great. The others though seem to have more to do with other factors other than race. Dolemite is a netflix exclusive (irishman only got it because scorcese) and parasite is foreign language.

@TheJustinHammer - ...as dumb as a Hooter birthday party.

@SerKurtWagner - Of all those movies, only Parasite is really good, Dolemite is good and the rest are average or plain bad.

@Origame - "I don't get why we should be just giving out awards purely based on skin color."

You're proving more and more just how much you don't get it. If that's what you're taking away from this then that is precisely why you continue to have these utterly unproductive arguments. And see, I'm not here to explain anything to you. I've already tried that in the past. As a matter of fact, my original comment here was to point that out exactly. Whether it's me, Joaquin, anyone else...you're just not even trying to understand. Further explanation is just futile. So stop asking for explanations just to dismiss them and fire back with nonsensical points like what I just quoted from you.

At this point, unless your self awareness factor has descended into pure delusion, you have to look around and realize how many people aren't agreeing with you. Then maybe you'll be able to have an honest conversation with yourself and say, "damn, maybe I'm looking at this all wrong." Until then, I suppose you'll just continue to ignore what you don't want to hear in favor of what you want to think.
