JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX Cinematographer Labels The Sequel "Surprising" And "Risky"

It seems you can count Joker: Folie à Deux cinematographer Lawrence Sher among the many who view the decision to make the Joker sequel a musical a risky proposition.

What do you do when you have a surprise $60 million film go on to earn over a billion dollars at the box office? If you're Warner Bros. you give the director of the film the keys to the kingdom.

And that's exactly what the studio did with its sequel to its 2019, psychological comic book thriller, Joker. However, the studio probably didn't expect Todd Phillips to develop a musical for his follow-up.  When details on the sequel were revealed in June 2022, it certainly elicited a polarizing reaction in our comment section!

Titled Joker: Folie à Deux, filming on the project recently wrapped up in April, and rumors speculate that the musical nature of the film is due to the audience's viewpoint shifting away from Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, with the sequel being told from the perspective of Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn. Apparently, this version of Harley views the world as one big musical.

Recently, cinematographer Lawrence Cher was back in the news, in an interview with Definition Magazine (via ComicBook). Apparently, the Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated cinematographer also views the musical nature of the sequel as somewhat of a risky proposition.

"Next year we're releasing the new Joker movie, and we're currently in the final stages of post-production," Sher told the magazine. "It's a pretty risky movie and it's going to be surprising for people. I'm so excited for everyone to see it."

Sher's comments come on the heels of his somewhat recent interview, where he disclosed that he initially had trouble working with Lady Gaga on set until he found the trick to communicating with the talented musician-turned-actress.

It seems there was weird tension between the two until another crew member gave Sher an inside tip.

"Oh you know, Stef would like if you just called her Lee on set.’ And I was like, oh, 100 percent, and I literally said, the next thing I said, was something ‘Lee,’ and it was like everything changed. From that point on, it was like she was… our whole connection changed. I was like, alright, cool."

Gaga is a much-publicized method actor and likes to stay in character during her various film production. For her Best Actress Academy Award nominated turn in A Star Is Born, Lady Gaga reportedly stayed in character for over a year.

Do you think Phillips, Phoenix and Gaga will recapture the magic of the 2019 film when Folie à Deux hits theaters on October 4, 2024? Warner Bros. is certainly hoping so, as the sequel has a substantially larger production budget.

@bobevanz - I guess the frequent contributors (i.e. Josh) only watch X and don't watch Star Trek. Would explain why it isn't covered.

But Like I mentioned to many people many times before, nobody is stopping you from writing the articles you wanna read.

Fairly sure she's going to kill him as the 'big climax' to her musical number - kinda the only way they can go to really expand on the subtheme of a failure to accommodate for those with mental health issues.

I'm open to seeing what they do. I am Kinda sad that this Joker isn't going to ever meet a "Batman." I still think they could have done the Aronofsky Batman Year One as a spin-off to Joker.

@BobGarlen - that's a crazy (good?) ifea. I never really liked that script, but I could actually see it work in the world of Joker. Only thing different would be Little Al'.

I'd rather they did this - and took risks/brought original ideas to the table than suffer another minute of the brain-numbing garbage of "BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN)" that squandered its screen time and a boat-load of legacy characters.

@Baf - If it worked for you - I'm glad. It was like an episode of a poor TV series to me; no scale, weak focus, paper-thin characters. For example: The Huntress. Without names I would never have guessed who she was supposed to be. That character, done properly, could carry a film.

@Baf - Yeah, the 'crossbow killer'. Could have been SO much more than that. I think you'll find most people here have 'pre-conceived investment', certainly more than the people writing the scripts. Popcorn away!

I don't think he'll get another Oscar, but switching to a musical was brilliant. It guarantees a best picture nom, and I bunch of others. There always has to be one musical for awards season, this is it. Call the first one "taxi driver and kings of comedy" but everything you watch has inspiration from something else, especially when it comes to superhero movies lol

the past tense of “cast” is “cast”. same as the word, “read”. “casted” is not a word.

I'm hyped to see her turn as Harley, but I didn't expect this movie to be told from her point of view. Kinda makes me wonder how much Joker will be in this Joker movie. The musical aspect certainly piques my interest, this movie is shaping up to be a peculiar one.

I liked Joker but it was clear to me that Todd Phillips used the characters brand to sell the film to the public then went about making a film that has little to do with the actual character. This musical idea is stupid and of course Warner Brothers gives their blessing to it instead of building on the success of the first film. Another reminder of why this studio is such a failure.
