Joker director Todd Phillips finally confirmed that he's working on a sequel to his controversial 2019 film last week, and we now have a couple of suitably bonkers updates on the project.
There was speculation that the follow-up might feature Harley Quinn when the title Folie à Deux - an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family - was unveiled, and according to THR, none other than Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born, House of Gucci) is in early talks to play a new incarnation of the character.
Further details on her role are being kept under wraps, but she obviously won't be playing the same version of Harley Margot Robbie portrayed in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad.
Oh, and the movie is reportedly being developed as a musical.
Phillips has been co-writing the script with Scott Silver for quite a while, and is said to have handed it in to Warner Bros. last week. Although the filmmaker's Instagram post included a photo of Joaquin Phoenix reading said script, it seems the Academy Award-winner hasn't officially signed on to reprise the role of Arthur Fleck just yet.
Gaga is an interesting choice for the role of Harley Quinn, but we can't see too many fans having a problem with it. The musical thing... might be a harder sell! Still, Phillips taking chances with the first film certainly paid off, and this idea is nothing if not audacious.
