JOKER 2: Lady Gaga In Talks To Play Harley Quinn In Todd Phillips' MUSICAL Sequel

We probably wouldn't have believed this if it didn't come from the trades, but Lady Gaga is indeed in talks to play Harley Quinn in the recently announced Joker sequel... which is going to be a musical!

Joker director Todd Phillips finally confirmed that he's working on a sequel to his controversial 2019 film last week, and we now have a couple of suitably bonkers updates on the project.

There was speculation that the follow-up might feature Harley Quinn when the title Folie à Deux - an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family - was unveiled, and according to THR, none other than Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born, House of Gucci) is in early talks to play a new incarnation of the character.

Further details on her role are being kept under wraps, but she obviously won't be playing the same version of Harley Margot Robbie portrayed in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad.

Oh, and the movie is reportedly being developed as a musical.

Phillips has been co-writing the script with Scott Silver for quite a while, and is said to have handed it in to Warner Bros. last week. Although the filmmaker's Instagram post included a photo of Joaquin Phoenix reading said script, it seems the Academy Award-winner hasn't officially signed on to reprise the role of Arthur Fleck just yet.

Gaga is an interesting choice for the role of Harley Quinn, but we can't see too many fans having a problem with it. The musical thing... might be a harder sell! Still, Phillips taking chances with the first film certainly paid off, and this idea is nothing if not audacious.

We'll be sure to keep you guys updated, but for now, let us know what you make of this news in the comments section.

I don't even necessarily think she'll do a bad job. But another Harley... In a movie that didn't make sense for a sequel... That's now going to be a musical?

Is this the Joker, or an SNL skit?

If it’s a musical like A Star is Born I wouldn’t mind.

Oy horrible casting imo… but then again I thought the first one was incredibly overrated

@ReverseFlasher - I thought the first movie just wasn't good. I know I'm in the minority, but I just thought it was a bad and boring movie.

LMFAO. The "we live in a society" dudebros are gonna be going through the motions with it being a musical.

That said, it being a musical can be master work if Phillips pulls it off.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - You didn’t learn your lesson? Your opinion is not everyone else’s. You’re making unfounded claims based on emotions because you think what you like is what’s reality. Sorry for ya.

Ragnarok reviewed significantly higher than Joker. Get over it. More people enjoyed it than Joker. I liked the film okay but it’s only worth one watch. Most people aren’t trying to watch depressing psycho drama over and over. Ragnarok on the other hand is multifaceted and has a range of elements that people enjoy experiencing.

So you can cool it with your irrational, contrarian, nihilist nonsense.

@Tonic24k - 1. Shit, then doesnt that lesson apply to the senior above us, who made an unfounded claim about Joker being an art house Venom?

2. Uh, no, it did not. What are we going by here, Rotten Tomatoes? Joker's got 7.3 avarage rating. Ragnarok's got 7.6. That's not "significant". Add to that the fact that Joker made more money and was nominated for multiple Oscar's and have won several.

I'm sorry I had to burst your bubble, where the worst of Thor movies, which character assassinated everyone it could, including the titular character, devoid of any real human emotion or even something as basic as good camera blocking, did worse than an R-rated psychodrama which had an entire media turn against it.

So you can cool with your irrational sparks directed at Joker. Sorry cinema does well.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - Pwahaha. Cherry picking are we? So you pick the review site and Joker still reviews lower than Ragnarok. And yes, other sites it did review significantly better.

Again, your opinion does not equal an objective truth. I don't give a fvck what you think of the film. None of what you think tho is what most others think. You can sit here and be dramatic about it all day long. But it reviewed well, made excellent box office money, and among consensus regarded as the best of the trilogy and beloved in general as an MCU installment. You cannot argue that. And no one wants to hear about your personal nagging opinion on every article.

So yeah, cinema does well and Ragnarok did well. Joker did well, too. So knock it off with your whining. That's not how grown men conduct themselves.

I was hoping the sequel would take cues from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the way the first took from Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. Not that it can’t anymore, just… making it a musical is a choice. That said, I wrote the first off as pointless misery porn before I actually watched and loved it, so I’m willing to give it a chance. Maybe it’ll win Best Original Song.

@comiccow6 - I feel like a One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest type movie could work for Joker. It could take place in Arkham Asylum with Harleen as the secondary main character. Arthur and Harleen could witness the corruption in Arkham Asylum and over the course of the movie, Harleen becomes obsessed with Arthur and becomes Harley Quinn.

Just my thought for it

Seems like everyone’s line of thinking here is going from Taxi Driver to Grease. When the reality will be more along the lines of Arthur and Harley falling for one another as this romantic fantasy clashes with their chaotic and murderous ways. Old school musical vibes, Singing in the Rain, but more like Singing in the Blood Rain. Point being it’s how they view their romance.

@PhoenixBlade - it could be like all that jazz, where it's still fairly cynical. although idk if it'll be as darkly comedic as that one. fosse's best film imo

@MaddAddaM - Maybe I just watched the first one and put two and two together. While everyone else is diverting into a completely different direction that makes no sense because they see musical and think that’s the only genre it can be.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 6/13/2022, 9:00 PM
@PhoenixBlade - So a little like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, perhaps. I liked that movie so if this is like that then I'm in.
PhoenixBlade
PhoenixBlade - 6/13/2022, 9:05 PM
@NinnesMBC - That’s more of a full on musical in which musical rules apply to the world. This will all be in the heads of the two leads. Wouldn’t be surprised if some scenes were shot in the same location. One time it’s a beautiful set, then the next time we see it, it’s a shithole.

A dark musical that’s in their heads as they cause chaos.
It could work .
Maybe.

@PhoenixBlade - With a Natural Born Killers meets Singing in the Rain kind of vibe? I could totally see that working.
