JOKER Is Officially Certified Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes, But It Might Be Temporary

Joker has officially been "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, but with more reviews set to hit the site over the weekend, that might not last as the score continues to slip. Read on for details...

Despite overwhelmingly positive reviews from the Venice Film Festival following its world premiere, the buzz surrounding Joker has grown increasingly negative in recent weeks, mostly due to its portrayal of violence and concerns that it could inspire disturbed individuals to rally around this version of the Clown Prince of Crime.

Last night, Joker was officially "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 73%. However, with more reviews expected to arrive over the weekend, there's a chance the DC Comics adaptation could dip to 70% or below and lose its "Fresh" certification in the process.

According to the Critics Consensus, "Joker gives its infamous central character a chillingly plausible origin story that serves as a brilliant showcase for its star -- and a dark evolution for comics-inspired cinema."

There's still a lot of Oscar buzz surrounding Joaquin Phoenix's performance, and if there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that he definitely delivers as the iconic villain.

I'll be posting my Joker review both here and to Rotten Tomatoes tomorrow, so be sure to check back then to see how I rate Todd Phillips' origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime.

Watched it tonight. Just got back.

Even if you don't like DC, don't like comics, or for some reason don't like the movie .. there is no denying .. this is possibly the absolute single best performance by an actor .. possibly ever

Phoenix is memorizing.

As for the movie, I was blown away. I had high expectations and it surpassed them all. Twists I didn't expect. It was captivating from start to finish.

It's one of very few movies that I wanted to walk right back into and watch again.

Watched it last night. Great performance by Phoenix. Amazing camera work. It's kinda got that Taxi Driver vibe to it.

Gotta say though, it was kinda concerning seeing the audience cheer during the more.. *violent* parts of the movie.

Some of the Easter eggs and references were truly awesome. Like there's this one shot towards the end and CB boys will go oh my god this is THAT moment.

@MadKingCipher - I'm neither confirming nor denying the presence of a surfboard in this movie.

Thats the problem, the whole point of seeing a solo movie about Joker is seeing him doing horrific insane stuff. This is further supported when the characters he is doing it too are unlikable and he achieves a level of a goal throughout the film (along with actual change)

I love that... they hesitated for so long, then certify it when it actually does fall below the threshold. (Certified Fresh films are supposedly ones with a 75% or higher rating, although once they give that score they only take it away if it later falls below 70%)

Seems really fishy to me.

@Chewtoy - It was certified at a 79% with 161 reviews, and it never dipped below 75% until now. Rotten Tomatoes purposefully waited until it hit twice the required 80 review threshold, I don't know what they were supposed to do at that point

@tmp3 - I think WB has something to do with this... I guess they wanted the news to come closer to the film's release?

@tmp3 - From their explanation of what “Certified Fresh” means:

“A movie or TV show that reaches the requirements for Certified Fresh doesn't immediately receive the designation. Instead, it is automatically flagged for our staff's consideration. Once the team can determine that it's unlikely the score will drop below the minimum requirements, they will mark it Certified Fresh.”

Joker has been steadily going down and likely still had at least 100+ more reviews to come at that point. How they decided then that it was “unlikely” to drop below 75% is hard to figure.

@WakandanQueen - RT decides when to hand out the Certified Fresh stamp
@Chewtoy - Any movie over 75% fresh with 80 reviews can get a certified fresh, they waited until 160 reviews with Joker to see if it would dip below and it didn't

@Chewtoy - no calling it a conspiracy but them marvel movies are certified fresh way before they hit 150 reviews. I've always wondered what went into freshly certifying movies.

@FarFromClunge - I can't recall another time when RT actually waited this long. If anything, this may have been Warner Bros' request for whatever reason (flashback to Justice League's Tomatometer reveal).
