This week saw James Gunn confirm that he's writing a new Superman movie...minus Henry Cavill. The actor's time as the Man of Steel is at an end, no great surprise with DC Studios expected to usher in a new era of storytelling with the "DCU."
The DCEU is no more, and if Cavill is being replaced, we have to believe no one is safe. After all, it wouldn't make much sense to swap the Man of Tomorrow and not characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie has made the latter her own, but like Cavill, hasn't had the easiest ride on screen thus far.
Suicide Squad was a critical flop, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey underperformed despite mostly positive reviews, and The Suicide Squad - which was a hit with critics - struggled to find an audience due to the brand being tarnished. Robbie's future may be uncertain, but Lady Gaga will play a new Harley in Joker: Folie à Deux.
In the video below, the Barbie star responds to the singer taking over the role in the Joker franchise, sharing her support for Gaga.
"I think she's going to do an amazing job. I'm so excited, it's all I could've ever hoped for Harley was that she would become one of those characters, kinda like Batman or Hamlet, that's gets handed from actor to actor, everyone gets a go at playing them."
"So, I think it's just credit to her as a character that people want to see her in multiple iterations," Robbie concluded. I'm excited."
The interviewer didn't ask Robbie about her own future as Harley, though we do wonder if the actress views Joker: Folie à Deux as a passing of the torch. That movie won't be part of the DCU as it's set to remain standalone in nature, but how will fans feel if Cavill is sent packing and The Suicide Squad star isn't?
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024.
