Julie Newmar Weighs In On Today's Batman and Catwoman

Julie Newmar shares her thoughts on the differences between the Catwoman of today and the version she made famous.

People tend to get so caught up with the current Chris Nolan version of Batman and the fact that Anne Hathaway is taking over as Catwoman that some forget plenty of actors have previously portrayed the character on film. Before Michelle Pfeiffer donned the cowl, before Halle Berry put on the spiked heels, Julie Newmar had young men drooling all over themselves with her portrayal of the infamous Catwoman in the 1960's Batman series starring Adam West.

Speaking with HERO COMPLEX recently about Bluewater Productions upcoming comic "Secret Lives of Julie Newmar," Newmar also offered her opinion on the Batman and Catwoman as we see them on film today.

“This is what I get from people when they talk to me about the original Catwoman and compare it to the latter ones,” Newmar said. “I think people prefer the more humorous one, the lighter one. People seem to complain that the recent ones are too dark in spirit. But that’s what reflects what’s going on. That’s what film and acting and everything is. … I don’t envy someone that has to play Batman or Catwoman today. It was a heck of a lot more fun when Adam West and I did it.”

According to Newmar, "Secret Lives of Julie Newmar" should be availible this December.

Julie Newmar's Catwoman > Anne Hathaway's Catwoman.

Julie Newmar's Selina Kyle < Anne Hathaway's Selina Kyle.

My opinion so far...

She gets that cuz it´s from people who know her from the show and grew up with it and probably only knew Batman from the show, which it´s fine. But it´s not the people who grew up with the darker and grittier comics. Nobody questions why something like Alien or Silence Of The Lambs is dark instead of "fun", cuz that´s what it´s meant to be, but what they don´t know is Batman was meant to be that too.

teabag is absolutely correct. Love or hate the "Adam West Batman" but the book was on it's way to being history until the show aired. No Adam West Batman = no Nolan Batman.

@teabag
Thank you. I was just going to say that.
No matter how much you hate that show, it was the biggest f*cking thing in this country in '66. Batmania swept the nation and many characters actually spawned because of the show.
Batman was an amazing tv series for its day and I'll be damned if it wasn't one of the purest adaptations of a comic book. The late 50's-mid 60's Batman comics were just as campy as the show.
Of course the character isn't all campy now, times have changed. But things were different back then.

adam west batman was a joke it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, tim burton batman was dark & how the modern batman was after the classic comic the dark knight returns.schumacher was abit of both campy, dark & fluorescent paint without these take's on batman no nolan.

I honestly think that she's the sexiest ((or at least she WAS)) Catwoman. Michelle Pfiefer is a close second.

The most Cat-like Catwoman, however, was Eartha Kitt. That woman was amazingly graceful, and had a voice that could purrr. I got to see her live in a play once, and she was amazing to watch "glide" instead of walk. She was tiny, however -- She was no more than 4'10" tall.

Lee Meriwether was the prettiest Catwoman . . . she was a former Miss America.

But Julie Newmar was the sexiest.

I understand some of those "campy" TV episodes were adapted straight from actual issues of Batman and Detective Comics. Whaddaya know? Stuff actually happened in comics BEFORE Batmnan Begins! Whoddathunk it?

What Newmar is saying is; she got to play Catwoman during a more positive time when it came to the fun and campy show. She doesn't envy Hathaway because she's doing Catwoman during the time of the internet troll, douche fanboys and anonymous hate spewers. I agree with her and I used to be glued to the TV when that bat signal started spinning. Right before Gillagan's Island came on.

Sorry, but thats retarded. I will never favor a light-hearted 'humorous' version of a world that is supposed to be dark and bleak. Its a necessary part of the human spirit and obviously im not alone... considering the major flops of Batman Forever / Batman & Robin... people want the real darkness that comes with loss, crime, vengeance, death, and unachievable triumph.
