STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Actor Mark Hamill Weighs In On Jared Leto's Take On The Joker

Mark Hamill is considered the definitive Joker by many fans after voicing the Clown Prince of Crime for decades but what does he make of Jared Leto's divisive take on the iconic DC Comics villain?

Jared Leto's take on The Joker was met with a mixed response after he played the Clown Prince of Crime in last year's Suicide Squad and that mostly revolved around his appearance. Performance wise, what the Oscar-winning actor delivered was definitely interesting but it may still surprise you to learn that Mark Hamill - who is widely considered the best Joker - has nothing but respect for Leto's version.

Hamill has voiced The Joker in everything from Batman: The Animated Series to the Arkham video games and last year's The Killing Joke adaptation. Leto, meanwhile, is set to reprise the role in that Harley Quinn/Joker movie and Suicide Squad 2 but he won't appear in that standalone origin story.

Do you agree that Leto did the right thing by making the part his own or should he have stuck a little closer to the source material? We'll have to wait and see if he'll change his portrayal after all that backlash but be sure to let us know your thoughts on this news in the comments section down below.

I figured out why I wasn't a fan of letos joker the other day. He reminds me or Marylyn Manson.

Mark wasn't going to come out and say "he was a shit Joker" or anything like that. Mark's got too much class and wouldn't disrespect another actor.

@LEVITIKUZ - Right but youd think he would just say nothing, hes also not really afraid to be rude or opinionated

@Ha1frican - He's not afraid to be opinionated depending on the situation.

I want to give an example of when he's been opinionated but I am not 100% sure ComicBookMovie.com is the place to talk about politics.

But I doubt you'd ever see Mark come out and criticize an actor's performance.

@LEVITIKUZ - Right yeah but knowing hes as opinionated as he is on other things i feel that he wouldnt go out of his way to say something positive, he would just keep his mouth shut rather than give somoeone false praise or tear them down

@Ha1frican - True but considering he and Leto are connect by both actors playing the Joker, it makes things a bit more personal so to say.

It's not like he was asked "what did you think of Leto in Dallas Buyers Club". He was asked how he feels a fellow Joker was which is why he responded.

@LEVITIKUZ - thats fair, and he didnt really go into detail about what he liked so it could just be a smokescreen

Personally I enjoy Letos Joker. I like the predatory nature he had and the overall visual look (besides the forehead tattoo; there is no rlonger demotion in that).
I don't think there was anyway he could have "won". If he attempted to copy Ledger or Nicholson, then he would have still be condemned.

I think that we didnt get enough to properly judge letos joker, it seems like alot of it was cut, but from what we did see, Letos is basically a younger, hipster version of nicolson's joker who has consoldiated power as a gangster, which tbh, sounds really cool. I feel like while thwre are aspects to him that seem distant from other portrayals of joker, a lot is familiar, he is the Joker, he is insane, he kills people for fun, he embrace order in chaos.

I like Leto's Joker personally, but also feel like I cant make a real decision on it based on what we got in SS. Until I see more screentime and ultimately him interacting with Batman the jury is still out for me but im leaning towards positive. I REALLY hated the look when i first saw it and really all the way up to the release of SS but I found him at the very least extremely captivating and interesting. He needs a better wardrobe (the tats and teeth have grown on me) but otherwise im interested to see more

@Ha1frican -

I think he did okay with the role. I just think the antics beforehand overshadowed the role and movie to some degree.

I think the main way that they could have differed this iteration from previous lauded versions was his relationship with Harley.
Had they kept in the abuse and the domestic violence, and shown that the Joker doesn't care about anyone else but himself, it would have cemented his evilness and Harley's eventual redemption.

@SimplyAz - I think a lot more of that was there but hit the cutting room floor, even the Extended cut hes a bit more manipulative and its a little more ambiguous as to what he wants from her

@Ha1frican -

That's where the Studio Interference was really clear, and it worked for them to some degree, as I've read on Twitter where some people write they want a relationship like Harley and the Joker.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 9/25/2017, 11:50 AM
@SimplyAz - I think there should be a relationship and love there but it should only come from Harley or Joker when he is in need of something like in the original Mad Love story. If Joker has what he wants Harley should always be just something that is around if not an annoyance not a source of obsession or infatuation

As for Jared Leto's Joker, I can see why people don't like it.

@Highflyer - I can see it but think its a bit much the way some have made a definitive stance on its merits based on like 5 mins of total footage thats heavily edited

I thought Leto's Joker had potential, he was just underwritten and underutilized. There wasn't actually anything wrong with his performance.
