In this new chat with Access Hollywood, The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan once again praises Tom Hardy's performance as the villainous Bane, mostly discussing his inspirations and scenes shared with Christian Bale:

“When we chose Bane as the antagonist and I thought about asking a great actor to cover his face up for the whole [movie] — you could just see his eyes and just hear his voice — I knew immediately that Tom would be up for that,” the director told Access Hollywood at the press junket for The Dark Knight Rises.”

”[He’s] something you’ve never seen before. It’s a little bit of Darth Vader, a little bit of this, little bit of that… It’s very unique and that’s what you get with great actors like Tom Hardy, he’s not just going to go through the motions, he’s going to try and craft a character that really makes sense for him. He has really gone in through the roots of the character and approached the evil,” the director explained.

“He had to make himself huge for the role. He learned how to do all of this fighting with Christian Bale, both of them wearing these crazy outfits where they could barely breathe. In Tom’s case, with this mask over his face, very tough to breathe, very hot, working in some very challenging environments,” Nolan told Access. “There was a lot of preparation that went into it, and it really shows on screen.”

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Alf is right. Also, Tom Hardy is no James Earl Jones. He can't be that intimidating with just his voice.

Okay i pretty sure most dont know Tom hardys acting ability ever since I seen Bronson I was a fan I mean this guy can act. Now Inception you didn't really see much of his acting ability but trust this guy can play a villian. Alot people dont know who Tom Hardy is cause he not a commerical actor with alot of great films under his belt such as christan bale. After this movie comes out he will be well known and trust he will steal the show. I suggest before you see TDKR check out Broson, The Take a mini series, and the warrior. His performances in the movies are unbelieveable. You will then understand why Nolan chose as Bane.

How dare he. NOBODY should get the Vader comparison. That's like announcers saying "Jordan-esque."

I just had another thought all of a sudden. I said before that I thought Bane's mask looked goofy. Now that Nolan revealed it was inspired by Vader, I just had an idea of what I think would make the mask look awesome. If the mask covered the top of head like a helmet and the only part of his face you could see were his eyes, I think that would look totally badass.

Actually, they should have made his mask more like Scorpion.

So funny Nolan mentions Darth Vader since Vader was actually produced by having two actors fill in the role - exactly the same as I proposed Nolan should have used for a cinematic Bane.

that's because his bane is a ripoff of vader.

If you watch the interview, the interviewer asks him if he thought Bane compared to Darth Vader, which when you look at Nolan's face it looks like he's like "Uh.. what?" Nolan then proceeds to answer the question basically saying "Sure there's a bit of classic villain in there" He most certainly did NOT say anything implying that it was his thought. This, my friends, is sensational journalism.

I don't think people are having enough perspective:

@Alf you sound like a stereotypical fanboy who is ignorant. If you were not ignorant, then you would have seen Bronson and Warrior, in which you haven't. He's a great actor.

Secondly, you keep calling him a midget which throws your argument away, coming off as trollish.
bonesmcgee
bonesmcgee - 7/12/2012, 4:02 PM
Also, I don't see how Bane's look here isn't any sillier than his awful costume from the comics. I like Bane as a character but he smells of early 90's.

@intruder You precedes to say Bane looks bad here...only wanting..a Mexican wrestler instead. Is there any irony here, in your statement? Not very smart.

Ok u mindless idiots!
Nolan isn't saying BANE is Vader!
He's saying he's in that league & OTHER kinds as well.
A mixture of several types!

Vader thing is only mentioned cuz of MASK & maybe Voice as well.

& on the SIZE!

Go & Fvcking read the press release of January 2011 when Tom Hardy was announces as BANE!
They clearly said; "It's a NEW interpretation of BANE" & if it's successful COMICS will follow this!! Cuz really Only major thing BANE did in comics was finding Batman's identity & Breaking his Back! Since then He's done nothing to even talk. Maybe cuz u can't top that!!
So u loser hater can cry all u want!
TOM & his Size & VOICE & TDKR are all AWESOME!
Feel Free to hate all u can!

It's time for Batman & Nolan fans to be Happy!
We GOT the First SuperHero Trilogy we Deserved & Needed!
BatmanBegins-TheDarkKnight-TheDarkKnightRISES - A Trilogy to cherish our whole lives!
These films will be remembered EVER!!
