Michael Caine: "There is no Johnny Depp in this Batman"

Micael Caine has revealed that production on the next Batman film is not that far along, but Depp won't be playing the Riddler.

"There is nobody, there's no script, there's nothing," Caine, who played Alfred in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, told MTV News of the status of the next Batman movie. "It can't possibly be made before 2011 because Inception is such a big picture."

"They won't tell me anything because I said this before," laughed Caine of the no-tell policy surrounding him after last year's Depp/Hoffman story. However, he did drop this little bit of information regarding the rumour that Johnny Depp would star in the sequel to 2008's 'The Dark Knight'.

"Johnny Depp is great in anything, but there is no Johnny Depp in this Batman. They tell me in no uncertain terms."

I hope Caine is right, I don't want Depp as Riddler.

Get David Tennant or Michael C. Hall, Nolan!

I think Michael C. Hall would be the best for the riddler, i never was really a fan of Depp for it.

@InTylerWeTrust82: I agree, even though I think Johnny Depp would do a pretty good job because, he's today's "weird" actor like Jim Carey was the 90's "weird", it's better to cast someone you would never expect. Everyone gave many opinions on who should play the Joker for The Dark Knight, then when Chis Nolan anounced Heath everyone was like: "No way, this guy can't pull it off". But he did, he did better than anyone would have hoped he could. Conclusion: Cris should cast an unexpected for Riddler(which he probably will)

airbeyonder: Yeah, I do think Depp would be good as Riddler. I just don't think "Perfect" with him as much as I do for Tennant or Hall.

Hopefully that means there will be no [frick]ing Riddler and we will be spared either A) A poor man's Joker like he is in the comics. Or B) A "Nolanized" serial killing, clue giving Riddler like we have all seen in the Saw movies and countless others before them. Because no matter what version or reinvention Nolan uses, there is no getting away from the fact that the Riddler SUCKS.

Next villain needs to be Catwoman and/or Deadshot.

Ledger was an unknown in terms of playing the joker, but still a pretty well known actor in films in general. I think Hall would be a good fit, but if they do a riddler story, I'd be surprised if he was cast as he isn't well known enough. They are more likely to cast a well known actor you wouldn't expect, rather than a lesser known actor who we think would fit well. Batman is a huge franchise, and so will demand big names.

riddler sucks. he shouldn't be in the next one. i'd be happy with just about any other villain that isn't the riddler or the penguin. those are two of the dumbest villains batman has.

what do you mean EVERYONE wants riddler?? most people just think its the next logical villain to put in.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 9/21/2009, 6:53 PM
Amen CDB. Anyone that has ever read a Batman comic knows that the Riddler is [frick]ing useless. Even the Riddler thinks The Riddler is useless! In Hush the only way he can get to Bats is by playing on the fact that nobody thinks hes a threat to anyone!

If they use the classic Riddler we will have clues left which Bats must solve and use his detective skills to track down the evil mastermind! YAAAAAAWN. I don't want to watch a [frick]ing game of sodoku for 2 hrs thank you very much.

Or, they could reinvent him as a much more dangerous serial killer who leaves clues which Bats must use his detective skills to follow. YAAAAWWWWWWN. Seen it in Saw, seen it in 7, seen it in Zodiac..its been done to death.

Ror@ I agree aboutte riddler but I do want to see more detective stuff. He's not called theworlds greatest detective for nohting. Yet in the Nolan movies he doesn't do any detecting. Maybe not the riddler but somebody who can challenge him not just physically but mentally as well. And the joker didn't challenge him mentally, philosophically but not mentally. Look at all the detective shit in the arkham asylum video game. Let's adopt some of that shit.

As great as films like Zodiac and Se7en are, im not all that keen on seeing The Riddler in the next Batman film...i woul much prefer a villain that we can see Batman go toe to toe with in a full on fight - Killer Croc or Bane (even though the character was handled dreadfully in Batman and Robin) are two villains that with Nolan's take on them could end up being pretty amazing!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 9/21/2009, 7:48 PM
Well, he did that one bit with the fingerprints on the bullet in TDK!

Catwoman is the best choice. She can go toe to toe, mess with his head too while she seduces him. She has some great storylines in the comics. They should make her a prostitute that is sick of being beaten up and turns vigilante. We would probably need a truly evil second villain though so Deadshot or Black Mask could work.
GUNSMITH
GUNSMITH - 9/21/2009, 7:52 PM
I AGREE SUPERDOG-BUT LOOK AT IT IN THIS WAY...ITS A JOURNEY, TRUE BATCAVE HASNT BEEN SEEN YET, HE'S NOT CALLING IT THE BATMOBILE YET, ITS AN ESCALLATION TO THE BATMAN WE SEE IN THE COMICS, A JOURNEY...DETECTIVE STUFF, MAYBE THE RIDDLER MAKES HIM THAT DETECTIVE...
superdog
superdog - 9/21/2009, 8:05 PM
Gunsmith@ Could be. But there's never any mention in begins of him developing detective skills. Mostly fighting skills and learning the ways of the crimnal. But nothing to suggest that the guy has a genius mind worthy of being the worlds greatest detective.

Ror@ true, but that wasn't much. It's just not somethig Nolan has any interest in developing. He's more concerned with the social reasons for the batman and the societal impact of him and the villians. Which is ok by me. And i prefer the traditional catburglar catwoman. But that's probably not "dark" enough for Nolan.

I think they should have Rupert Thorne fill the void as Gotham's new crime boss. Vicki Vale as the new love interest. Hugo Strange the new criminal pyschologist at Arkham with much more sinister plans. He finds out Batman's identity and sells it to the highest bidder, Rupert Thorne. Thorne hires Deadshot to take out Bats. Great storyline from the 80s, very adaptable to Nolan's Universe.

I agree with both superdog and GUNSMITH I think they should do something like Long Halloween and use some of the detective aspects from Arkham Asylum. And also I think Michael C. Hall would make a good Riddler too.

I think they should bring in Black Mask as the new mob boss. With Bats as a fugitive, he has risen greatly in profits and is top dog in Gotham.

Meanwhile, on the Cops side, the police department brings in, against Gordon's wishes (since he doesn't want Bats to be captured), Edward Nigma, an "expert" in his field, who they believe has the brainpower and skills necessary to capture the Bat. He is shown as already having a fascination/obsession with the Batman, and it only grows deeper as he studies him and tries to actually take him on.

Back on the mob side, Bats is up to his old ways again, causing a hefty amount of trouble for Black Mask and his profits begin declining. Desperate, B. Mask hires an assassin/mercenary named Deadshot to take Bats out, and Gordon as well. Bats fights Deadshot before he can take out Gordon, and he is sent to prison.

Out of all the super villians in Batman's universe, its incredible that noone has a definite solution to who the main villian should be. I mean I've heard of a few choices such as Catwoman, Bane, Deadshot etc. but none of them would work by themselve as a true threat to Bats. Catwoman would be great but Im afraid there would be a conflict of intrest on Bats part and besides he cant beat her up like he would The Joker. Bane, would also be an interesting character but which Bane would they use. The really dumb, henchman type or the developer of the venom toxin which would suggest he has some brain cells. Deadshot would have to be a hired gun because, well thats what he is. Im thinking maybe an ensemble of villians would make for a more engaging story. But then again that would require alot for even Batman to deal with. Either way I dont think a new Bat film will be coming around the corner anytime soon. Seeing how the first 2 films were shrouded in the realm of reality, it will be difficult to introduce a villian with enough character to hold his own against Batman at the same time be intresting enough that we arent, as Rorschach01 has said, be bored out of our minds watching Bats solve clues and put puzzles together. Im sure Nolan and his team of writers will come up with something dazzling, I just dont expect it anytime soon.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
angry Pictures, Images and Photos Well Meh, It could still happen so...

I still think BB is better than TDK! Sorry...

Dead Shot and Black Mask would be a horrible addition @Tyler!!!!

InTylerWeTrust - 9/21/2009, 8:45 PM
Exactly why would they be horrible?

One is a bad ass, cunning, and extremely dangerous assassin.

The other is an intimidating, intelligent crime boss.

What is horrible about them?

What's horrible about them is a majority of the nation doesn't know nothing about them ;)(I could be wrong cause I don't know that much about Batman, but I do know him too an extent!!)

They do sound like some stunning additions, but I would prefer the horror in the K.Croc, or Bane, or Mad H., or yes....The Two-Face!! >:D
