THE BATMAN: HBO Max's Penguin Spinoff Started As The Movie's Sequel; Will Matt Reeves Direct The Show?

The Batman director Mat Reeves has shared an update on plans for a HBO Max show revolving around The Penguin, explaining that it was originally a big part of his idea for the upcoming movie's sequel.

The Batman introduces Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobbelpot, but his transformation into The Penguin will be covered in an untitled spinoff series coming to HBO Max. In a lengthy interview with Variety, filmmaker Matt Reeves confirmed that the show about this iconic Batman villain is actually much closer to shooting than the one about the Gotham City Police Department and Arkham Asylum.

However, the idea to explore Oz's transformation into Gotham's crimelord was one Reeves initially suggested to Warner Bros. as the premise of his planned sequel to The Batman

"And they were like, ‘Oh, we want to do that as a show," the director told the trade.

Reeves is creatively involved with this spinoff, but Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) is penning the series. As for whether he could step behind the camera before shooting the Caped Crusader's next solo adventure, he reportedly told the trade that he currently has no idea if he'll helm The Penguin's spinoff or even The Batman 2 (we're guessing the latter is definitely going to happen).

Instead, after spending the past five years developing the World's Greatest Detective's return to the big screen, Reeves looks set to take some well-deserved time off. Selfishly, we can't wait for the next instalment of the franchise, and you can find out why by checking out our spoiler-free review.

We can't blame Reeves for wanting to take a break, especially as news recently broke that the filmmaker has contracted COVID. Needless to say, we send our best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Both he and Robert have teased the idea of a trilogy fin the past and if that happens I do hope that Matt directs them. The Batman is quite simply a beautiful movie.

@bcom - I liked the movie but the pacing is way off! Some tighter editing could definitely help this movie out!

@bcom - He is directing the trilogy of movies.

@JonAwesome - disagree. But I was paying close attention to dialogue and was so invested so maybe that's partially why. Third act just straight up felt like the natural progression of the villain and his motives, but most importantly was necessary to Batman's transition into Gotham's hero, only to be feared by CRIMINALS. a beacon of hope for the oppressed.

@JonAwesome - I must admit, I did feel it lagged ever so slightly for maybe the first 40 or so minutes, but then it really ramped up for me. I think it may depend on expectations when going in. This is a very slow burn murder mystery type of movie. Watching this movie gave me the same feeling as reading The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. I'm seeing it again this weekend so I'm intrigued as to how a second viewing goes down.

@McMurdo - I loved that part. Batman realised he needed to be more to save his city and he stepped up to become a hero that the good people of Gotham can trust rather than fear.

The more I think on it, Mad Hatter wouldn’t be a bad idea for a villain, taking him down a dark route of kidnapping women in Gotham and having to have Bruce figure out the pattern and where they’re being held.

Maybe a bit Villain of the Week, but a different villain than what we’ve had

I'm curious about the Arkham spinoff and who they'll cast as Dr Hugo Strange, they should approach actors like Ralph Feinnes or Christoph Waltz,
and go full One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, cast interesting character actors for all the inmates. They've cast well so far with Farrell leading the Penguin and Jeffrey Wright leading the Gotham PD shows, it'll be fascinating to see how they integrate Batman.

Welcome to the club Matt. We got a whole earth of IMMUNIZED folk here copping that shit whilst Phizer, Moderna, and our corrupt congressmen pocket pocket pocket. Oh how timely this film is!

He should probably stick to doing the sequel.

Having watched the movie I understand why Penguin has a shot to become the fearsome crimelord by the end, but tbh I didn't think he "stole the show" in the film. He was good in his role but that's it.
