Lately I've been thinking a lot about that failed Birds of Prey show from a few years back, and realized some things about just how good it could've been if somebody making it actually gave a crap. Check it out:

It started off well, but degenerated into silliness. Too bad, it seriously had some potential. Kind of like another show I know of.

I thought the show wasn't too bad. I actually enjoyed most of it. Most tv shows especially back then had bad effects though so I am not really agreeing with that, but all of your other points were right on.
Nice vid.

I agree with earzmundo though
they could have gotten a season 2

IMO it was a good show. The only reason it got canceled from what've heard was WB were doing a reboot Batman movie which was Batman Begins and I guess WB didn't want anything live action connect to Batman put out because of they were afraid of viewers would be confuse. So the show was canceled and Smallville replace it.

Actually Birds of Prey got higher ratings then Smallville was getting.

No one really knows why it got cancelled. It wasn't because of the current Batman franchise. That was already in development. That is why they Smallvile TV Series and not a Gotham TV Series staring Batman/Bruce Wayne and why in the pilot they got rid of Batman.

I think you were too distracted by the lack of masks. I would say this: being mask-less just shows how anonymous one can be in a hugely populated city.

I see the other problems as this: the title. Who are the birds? There isn't a Black Canary. Huntress could be construed as a bird in title, but not this version. And Dinah is what again?

Then there is Dinah. An annoying neophyte telepath with a speech impediment. It just didn't make sense.
The Catwoman-Batman daughter scenario is a good idea, just not well developed.

Harley Quinn as the villain and overall subplot was great. It is what truly tied them to the Batman, aside from Oracle.

Last point: Dina Meyer is what held the show together and made it watchable. She was terrific and is so underrated.

I mostly agree with you. With the success of "Smallville" and the X-Men movies, I'm sure the WB/CW saw no need to mask their heroes or villains.

I think the show was created to fill a void left by Dark Angel. Which I believe Ashley, Dina and Rachel were apart of. Along with some of the sets and maybe stories that were originally meant for Dark Angel or Smallville. Since they had a lot of invested in both shows they were hoping to get more out of their investment and many actors were under contract and possibly paid by WB. So they came up with this show to get their money and some profits out all they invested in. It was easy for WB to do, since they owned all DC characters and it was probably an idea that was relit, again to fill a void left by Dark Angel.
