BOX OFFICE: BATMAN v SUPERMAN Shatters Records As It Tops THE DARK KNIGHT RISES' Opening Weekend

Batman v Superman is exceeding expectations, breaking several box office records and becoming Warner Bros. biggest opening weekend of all-time. Regardless of the critics, the movie is a hit...

The critics may have enjoyed savaging Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but that hasn't had too much of an impact on its opening weekend in North America! Variety reveals that its debuted with a massive $170.1 million, giving it the best March opening of all-time and the sixth biggest domestic opening weekend in history. Moviegoers have been much kinder to the movie than critics anyway, because as well as shelling out their hard earned cash to see it, they've given it a B CinemaScore grade.

Perhaps most impressive is the fact that Batman v Superman has beaten Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, a franchise Warner Bros. relied on for years rather than adapting their DC Comics properties. It's also beaten The Dark Knight Rises' opening, making Dawn of Justice the biggest Batman opener ever. We'll have updated international numbers for you later, but it has been revealed today that the Zack Snyder helmed release has already earned $43 million in China in just two days. Like it or not, the DC Films Universe is here to stay. How many times have you seen Batman v Superman

Whether you liked BvS or not, what matters is will we get future entertaining movies based on DC characters, especially acting together within a consistent universe and the question of whether or not this movie makes that a more or less likely possibility.

Given the response of critics, the declining audience score on RT, and the massive budget, it's fair to say that Zach Snyder has done DC and comic geek fans a disservice by jeopardizing that dream. But WB shares equal blame for 1) allowing him to direct after MOS, 2) not making a coordinated and well planned effort to create a coherent universe, 3) rushing a movie because it wanted it's own Avengers.

Has Snyder put a stake in that dream? Certainly not...but, the $170 million made was based on the popularity of the characters, the popularity of comic book movies (thank you Deadpool & Marvel), and the marketing campaign. After this weekend, advance prerelease tickets sold will no longer be a factor and reviews and word of mouth will play an increasing role and marketing's influence will drop. Given the budget of BvS and the potential budgets of future DC movies, WB must consider how much more money the movie could have earned had Snyder made a movie more popular with both critics and the general audience.

@AnglesofAttack

Got a feeling that Snyder will still Direct JL1 only...and then move up as a producer..

@AnglesofAttack - If BvS being one of the worst films of all time equals more DC Films then I don't want them.

@AnglesofAttack - There seemed to be a lot more Snyderisms in BvS than MoS, I think WB let him have more freedom on this one. But they'll be watching his ass while he's making JL since it's too late to halt production.

@LEVITIKUZ - I understand what you mean, but I think the head honchos will take Snyder's blank slate away from him and start to insist on more "fun".

@TheFamousJMC - Yeah, there is definitely a sense of "we've dodged a bullet this time" emanating from all of this. The marketing and actor interviews helped dampen the effect of bad reviews. I wouldn't be surprised if Affleck's reaction in one of those interviews is shared by WB execs.

@AnglesofAttack - can't say I agree with point number 3 since the film took 3 years and was even pushed back a year at one point. Which makes it all the more baffling that it was so awful.

@Brainiac13 - What's up man! The comic book geek in me absolutely loved it . I'm gonna write an article up, I just haven't had a chance yet, and I feel like waiting a little longer to post it because I don't want to spoil anything.

All in all, I can understand the criticisms from the movie critics, especially by the book and close minded critics, but I love that WB/DC pushed the limits with B v S.

Every time I watch Batman v Superman: DOJ it gets better man, the movie is so rewatchable, I keep finding new things to geek out about, haha
