BLACK ADAM Trailer Shows DC's New Anti-Hero Kicking The Justice Society's Ass; Viola Davis Joins Cast

Warner Bros.' Comic-Con panel just wrapped up, but Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has shared a new minute-long trailer for Black Adam that shows his electrifying anti-hero battling the Justice Society...

Well, if Comic-Con proved anything, it's that you can always rely on Warner Bros. to disappoint DC fans.

While we certainly can't complain about that action-packed Shazam! Fury of the Gods teaser or this fun Black Adam sneak peek, the studio made zero announcements, shared no surprises, and definitely didn't bring Henry Cavill out on stage to announce his return as Superman.

Dwayne Johnson was asked who would win in a fight between Black Adam and the Man of Steel, and acknowledged that "pound for pound they’re close." However, he'd then add "that depends on who is playing Superman." We're not sure how to take those comments, but one noteworthy casting addition was made to this movie in the form of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller.

We don't know what The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker villain will be getting up to just yet. However, something tells us she'll have a vested interest in Black Adam.

During a panel that saw Johnson enter Hall H in costume as Black Adam, he also revealed that, "My goal is to usher in a new era in the DC universe."

You can get a glimpse at what that might look like in the new Black Adam trailer below:

From New Line Cinema, Dwayne Johnson stars in the action-adventure Black Adam under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise). Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods - and imprisoned just as quickly - Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Johnson stars alongside Aldis Hodge (One Night in Miami) as Hawkman, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi (Sex/Life) as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) as Ishmael, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets) as Cyclone, Bodhi Sabongui (A Million Little Things) as Amon, and Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) as Dr. Fate.

Black Adam will electrify audiences in theaters when it's released on October 21, later this year!

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I just wanna know how this all ties together within the DCEU aka how these films fit in Justice League?

Shazam FOTG just confirmed Justice League is canon... so...

Where were the JSA during the events of Justice League?

JSA was a no show when Steppenwolf invades earth, but they show up when Black Adam is awaken.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - DC has my favorite superheroes... this is so [frick]ing depressing.

Watching WB absolutely BUTCHER this universe over and over again makes Being a DC fan feel like watching your abusive father slap around your angel of a mom who you love. I feel so [frick]ing angry and helpless. There is nothing I can do to stop it... even if I run away because I can't take it anymore, I know WB will still be abusive long after I'm gone.

😭😭😭😭😭

@UGLYsonic - how is it that WB animated properties (Man of Tomorrow, Beware my power, etc) are more cohesive than their live action? And they’ve had blue print for years with BTAS, STAS, JL, and JLU.

This sucked! The only reason I tuned in was for Henry Cavill and all I get is more stupid slapstick nonsence. I look forward to WB being sold again!

@Forthas - first shazam was better than anything cavil did

also yeah shazam is a goofy franchise the movies should be goofy

now if this was superman or batman or constantine, id see what you mean

Forthas - 7/23/2022, 2:43 PM
@dracula - 1) Unlike Man of Steel, I have not heard about any fan campaigns asking for a Shazam 2. 2) Man of Steel made a crap load more money at the box offcie and in DVD sales than Shazam will ever dream of doing 3) Shazam is a great film - for a 13 year old. The majority of people living in any community are older than 13 years old so this Shazam does not appeal to most of the movie going audience thus the poor box office.

Origame
Origame - 7/23/2022, 2:48 PM
@Forthas - 1) no one was asking for it because we knew it was coming.

2) you do realize Shazam and Shazam 2 are significantly lower budget right? Like only a fourth of the budget and made more than half of the box office of man of steel. Shazam is undeniably more successful than man of steel.

3) well, that's like you're opinion man.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/23/2022, 2:49 PM
@roboticJohnson - WB had the opportunity to impress (Cavill or not ) and they did not. It is the same nonsence we have been seeing for the past 3 years (Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad).
dracula
dracula - 7/23/2022, 2:53 PM
@Forthas -

Guessing you mean the cult filled with bots.

Shazam 2 didnt need a campaign because there was talk of it ever since the first film came out, recieving better critical response and with a smaller budget.

Man Of Steel barely broke even with its budget and may have lost money if you include the marketing. Man of steel did nothing but split the fanbase, beginning the downward spiral DC was on for close to a decade with few things worth the watch

Good film for people who actually like the Shazam character. Plenty of room for serious stuff like The Batman and Joker 2 and goofy stuff like Shazam and Black Adam

Also Aquaman was probably goofier than the shazam movie and made more than any other dceu film

@Origame -

1) They knew it was coming and there is still almost no buzz about it. Even after releasing the teaser months ago, i still often for get the film is coming out.

2) People do not go to the movies based on budgets. They just go, so if shazam were a beter film as you claim then it should have still made as much if not more than Man of Steel

3) My opinion supported by facts!

dracula - 7/23/2022, 3:06 PM
@marvel72 - Which one got an actual sequel and which one had to throw batman into the next movie?

Shazam, wonder woma, aquaman, joker, the batman all managed to get proper sequels

man of steel is the only one that felt the need to add audience bait for the next film
dracula
dracula - 7/23/2022, 3:10 PM
@Forthas - audiences dont see movies based on budget but sequels get made on success and the amount of money a movie needs to make to be successsful depends on the budget

For most movies 1 billion dollars is a sucess but if a movie cost 500 million, then even a billion dollars would be considered a failure

shazam cost less so it took less to be worth continuing. by comparison man of steel broke even and bvs lost most of its audience in one weekend

showing its not worth the investment and a lack of interest outside of the premise (people love batman and superman but they want good supeman and batman movies)
roboticJohnson
roboticJohnson - 7/23/2022, 3:15 PM
@Forthas - I mean, I was impressed. Both of the trailers we got were good, but if you don't like them there's nothing to do about it, it's subjective after all. What do you think they should have done different?
Forthas
Forthas - 7/23/2022, 3:23 PM
@dracula -

Maybe WB should listen to those bots instead of placing themselves in a position to be sold every few years

Yes there was talk of Shazam for years and there is STILL no significant buzz about it.

Man of Steel brought in about $300 million dollars IN PROFIT (not sure where you are getting the misinformation from)

At the end of the day, making these films is a BUSINESS!!! You should be appealing to the broadest audience you can. Sure there is room for goofy films...but limit it to streaming or its own sperate universe, not blockbuster cinema venues. Why are they wasting money and advertising dollars on films that will not garner the same return as the more serious films. The most serious CBM films (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, Logan, Joker, and the Batman) ALL are films that NEVER lost money for their studio. The films you seem to enjoy do not have the same critical or commercial success of those films.

Aquaman is an outlier, and quite frankly better balanced the drama and action which is what James Wan is known for (even if over the top) with the comedy. ALSO almost 1/3 of its box office came from China for reasons I don't know. So it is dependent on China to be that profitable. The OTHER DC films that made over a billion dollars (Joker, Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises) were not then and are not now dependent on the Chinese box office!
Forthas
Forthas - 7/23/2022, 3:27 PM
@roboticJohnson - They should abandon every DC film that has not start shooting and with the ones that have close out the DC Universe as it is now. They should then ignore everything that happened after Man of Steel and pair it with the Dark Knight Trilogy. Those four films should form the foundation of the new shared DC universe and they should restart it with those films serving as the blue print.

@dracula - Still doesn't mean Shazam is better than Man Of Steel.
dracula
dracula - 7/23/2022, 3:41 PM
@Forthas - Man of steel cost around 300 million and made 600 million, thats not pofit, movies need to double their budget before making a profit, everything before that goes to recouping investments with interest and paying fees.

in comparison The Batman cost less and made more, that is success. doing more than tiple its budget and thats after covid cost caused the budget to almost double. That made enough to pay for the sequel with a budget increase. man Of steel didnt even come half way to paying for bvs.

yeah serious films make money, although man of steel didn't. Also wouldn't call it goofy but its nothing like the films you listed, by modern standards. the original christopher reeve superman made a movie with inflation and had a budget on par with man of steel.

Also what didnt loose money? the guardians of the galaxy, Thor ragnarok (the first two serious films being on the lower end of their phases) What did fail was Eternals.

Whether it comes from china or not who cares?

@Forthas - You can find budget and box office information online, man of steel cost 300 million and made 600 million

bvs's box office drop in the second weekend was well recorded

MAN OF STEEL WAS NOT PROFITABLE
FALSE - Before Man of Steel’s theatrical release, it attracted a record (at the time) $160 million in advertising dollars offsetting its reported $225 million production budget. Man of Steel went on to generate $667 million worldwide banking an estimated $300 million in profit according to SNL Kagan analyst Wade Holden becoming the highest grossing solo Superman film of all time and most profitable.
https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/batman-v-superman-set-to-be-less-profitable-than-man-of-steel-a6978411.html - Couple that with Man of Steel’s performance post box office currently ranking 23rd on the all time US Blu-ray sales chart (selling more than Black Panther, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Captain America: Civil War, and Aquaman)

@Forthas - you can find this info on any movie site, hell even wikipedia, all it take is some very simple math to figure out the numbers

now as for superman the movie having a comparable budget and a higher box office with inflation, just go to a site like this

https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

and put in the numbers it will do the math for you
