Well, this is a good news, bad news situation.
The good news is that with no real competition, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice will unsurprisingly finish at #1 again as it collected an estimated $52.3 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic sum to approximately $261 million. The Zack Snyder-directed film also brought in another $85 million from international markets, bringing its global sum to approximately $419 million. Its worldwide tally now stands at around $681 million, which is already more than the final worldwide sum for Man Of Steel.
Now, here's the really bad news - On the heels of suffering a record-breaking 81% drop on its second Friday, the critically panned feature has suffered a 68% drop overall for its second weekend, which is the biggest second weekend drop ever for a film that stars either Batman or Superman in history. The news wasn't entirely unexpected, but it's still surely a huge disappointment for Warner Bros.' as they attempt to launch their DC Extended Universe and have once again seemingly failed to deliver. It should also be noted that Fandango reported that a majority of people buying tickets this past weekend were repeat viewers.
Rabid fans have tried to maintain that critics don't matter when it comes to this film (and somewhat oddly, that it's a film only for the highly intelligent), but the numbers don't lie. Also, with fan reception on sites such as CinemaScore, IMDb, RottenTomatoes, and more starting to line-up with the critical reception, it may be time for WB to go back to the drawing board before they kick off production on Justice League - Part One on April 11.
Fortunately, there isn't much major competition for Batman v Superman until Walt Disney Pictures' The Jungle Book, which is receiving a lot of early positive buzz, hits theaters April 15, so there's still a fairly decent chance it'll reach that milestone $1 billion mark in a few weeks time, albeit a lot slower than initially expected. However, how long its legs will stretch is truely up for debate and with a reported $900-950 million needed at minimum for the film to break-even, things are certainly looking less than ideal for the beginning of DC's cinematic universe.
So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.
