Ryan Coogler might just outdo the Russo Brothers and The Winter Soldier with these action sequences

I did not want to watch this but holy shit, the Wakandans are the new badasses of the MCU

The very specific fight choreography for the Dora Milaje is so damn impressive, it's honestly more beautiful to look at than T'Challa's style. And Coogler is definitely living up to his promise of the fight sequences being a mix of Kingsman and CREED. That spear throw is Kingsman but so much more authentic than whatever the hell was going on with The Golden circle.

@ScarletWarlock - I always liked that the fight scenes in the first Kingsman were a bit ridiculous but I think The Golden Circle took it a bit to far.

But more on topic, I love what Ryan Coogler has done so far with these action sequences and the fighting styles and abilities of each character. T'Challa being a superhuman and all can do crazy shit like jump several feet, run alongside walls, and send enemies flying with kicks, and his fighting style is acrobatic and martial arts heavy with a cat like and animalistic flair. Okoye and her Dora Milaje move as a single unit and they're masters of the spear, using it to disarm, distract and strike in all sorts of ways. Nakia being a Wakandan spy and a bit more of wildcard has so far a very aggressive fighting style that seems to use a bit of Krav Maga. M'Baku is probably stronger than everybody else since he can lift a grown man with one arm and he must rely on his brute strength a lot. Killmonger looks like and seems like a mix between Western styles and Wakandan/African styles, since he uses guns, grenades (as former black ops) as well as the sword/machete and short spear combo. Shuri being the least traditional and a scientist, has her tech weapons.

@BlindWedjat - Yes! Even the fight sequences feel character driven almost. The shot of the Dora Milaje assembling is so beautiful to look at. I'm not sure who came up with that idea(probably Coogler collaborating with the stunt coordinator or fight choreographer), but it really gives us something we haven't seen in superhero cinema in terms of visuals. We've never seen a fighting unit like this with so many different fighting styles in one flick before. And Coogler is utilizing the mix of practical and CGI so well. I know that most people were considering this a win already, but I think it's going to more of a win than what people are already expecting. I mean, legit, possible Masterpiece level of film-making in terms of reception. Maybe I'm calling it too soon, but I have a feeling.

@ScarletWarlock - Completely agree about the fight scenes feeling character driven. One of the reasons The Winter Soldier is so good in my opinion is that the action sequences are very character driven. The first one on the ship is a stealth mission, so Cap and Widow are clearly very well prepared and take enemies out as quickly and silently as possible (except for Cap vs Baltroc, as Cap is trying to prove a point and is therefore showing off a bit). Compare that with the fight scene at the bridge vs The Winter Soldier and you can see Cap is desperate, throwing desperate punches and kicks and is stumbling a bit because he's still shocked by the Winter Soldier's abilities. Both him and Widow slowly start adapting to the situation.

Ryan Coogler seems to have followed this pattern as well. The fight scene in the forest looks like T'Challa in his element: A big cat in the shadowy forest. While the casino fight looks hectic because the Wakandans must be out of the element. And that car chase scene clearly shows some desperation and each of the adapting to the situation.

The big difference between these two movies so far is that the fight scenes in Black Panther are gorgeous to look at. No slight to the Russo brothers as I love their work in the MCU, but them being inspired by The Raid and the Bourne films while Coogler being inspired by the James Bond films and Afrofuturism (and with his own skill and his cinematographer being as talented as she is) is the clear difference. All of these shots are breathtaking, and combining that with stellar fight choreography and practical effects and CGI gives a very unique product. Something of a heightened reality that still feels very real and grounded in a real culture.

And yes, I don't know about Black Panther being the best MCU film by I certainly think it will be the most well made MCU film to date.

@BlindWedjat - The James Bond influence is a good place to get inspiration for Panther: The gadgets and kind of ladies man, rich diva aesthetic really works for T'Challa and the whole sci-fi element, because, even though Wakanda, I think, in every adaptation is unique and cool, it could potentially come off as boring in the wrong hands and within a cinematic universe full of cool stuff. Like, it could be dark and edgy, whereas Coogler wasn't afraid to get weird, colorful and pulpy with the visuals. Even in the darkly lit sequences, there's a color palette to the fights that are excellently chosen that allows it to be, in its own way, as colorful as Guardians or Ragnarok--and just as unique, if not more.
