BLACK WIDOW: Kevin Feige Reveals Change To Marvel's Multi-Picture Deals; Check Out A New Featurette And Poster

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explains how they've moved away from the traditional multi-picture deals, while a new featurette and poster for Black Widow have also found their way online today...

Black Widow is now playing in theaters across the globe, while it arrives in the U.S. tomorrow evening before becoming available on Disney+'s Premier Access everywhere starting Friday morning.

Talking about the movie during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke about the multi-picture deals actors were frequently signed up to in the past. Remember, Samuel L. Jackson once famously agreed to nine movies in 2009, while Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth committed to six-picture pacts. Now, things have changed.

"That got a lot of attention way back when, with I think Scarlett, and (Chris) Hemsworth and Evans and Sam Jackson. It varies now," Feige explained. "It varies, project to project, cast to cast. Really, what we want are people that come in, are excited to be in the universe, are excited at the opportunity to do more things, as opposed to being locked into contractual obligations."

In other news, Marvel Studios has shared more new content to hype Black Widow, including a new featurette exploring how the movie ties into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We also have another poster putting the spotlight squarely on Natasha Romanoff as she leaps into action.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Black Widow is Bourne meets Bond meets Terminator...with two outstanding, badass female leads. Action-packed, funny, and at times surprisingly gut-wrenching, Cate Shortland's vision for the MCU is bold, empowering, and utterly unmissable."

In the movie, Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige; Black Widow - the first big screen story in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - arrives on July 9th both in theaters and on Disney+.

@Vanillain - I only get excited when its Pixar, Disney Animation is hit/miss to me. Sadly, I probably won't be able to watch Pixar films in theater anymore because Disney prefers it to be on D+ now.

@mastakilla39 - I love Pixar too and am glad they started doing more original films again. I'm just a sucker for musicals so I'm excited for Encanto.

Isn't it illegal to sign actors for more than 3 films?

I think Disney/Marvel got away with 5+ films because any film beyond the agreed 3 were only cameos and not "full" films. Harry Potter's cast had to re-negotiate before finishing the final 3 films.

@mastakilla39 - If it wasn't, with the huge success of Marvel movies, I wouldn't be surprised if actors' agents would want to negotiate depending on the success of the character and/or movie, so they wouldn't want to commit for more movies at once.

@colonel179 - I read it was illegal to sign actors for more than 3 films because it was considered a "slave contract". Back in the golden age of hollywood actors had to sign exclusive and multi-picture deals with movie studios or else they can't work. Then if you piss off a rich studio head, your career is essentially over because they can shelf you for 10 years due to the exclusive contract.

I'm assuming Disney must've found some loophole around the 3 picture deal because the actors guild hasn't sued them yet. Maybe actors and their agents are allowed to re-negotiate their clauses every 3 films now...

@mastakilla39 - it might not have been illegal, but a SAG rule which pretty much leads to the same result.

Thats one of the better posters honestly.

As for those contracts, it makes sense with them probably only have basic ideas of where to take the story and the characters.

@bkmeijer - Agreed. I don't think their contractual needs are the same anymore. Plus there are probably a LOT more actors now that are more than willing to stick it out long term, so long-term legal commitments are less needed.

I think Marvel really screwed up by not releasing/making this in place of Captain Marvel in 2019. I think the timing of Capt Marvel was all wrong. Marvel was at the finish line of a huge climax to their epic saga and decide to do a prequel movie to set up phase 4 right (before releasing their massive finale) for a new character that didn’t even need to be in that film (plot wise).

I think

2018 - Infinity War
2018 - Antman 2
2019 - Black Widow
2019 - Endgame

Would have made so much more sense, especially knowing BW’s sacrifice in Endgame. It would have also been nice to see a tiny bit of what Cap, Falcon, BW, etc were doing before they show up in IW.

@HulkisHorny - Kinda hard to see any decision that leads to a new character making a billion dollars their first time out as a "screw up". Besides, people were way more hyped to see Captain Marvel than they were ever going to be to see any Black Widow movie released at any time

If anything, Ant Man 2 could've been replaced by Black Widow but then you screw up the story for Endgame. The best time to release Black Widow and stay within the '3 a year' schedule they were on back then was to release it in 2016, but they only wrestled control of Marvel from Ike in mid 2015, so the wheels on Black Widow were pretty much never going to turn in time for a movie to come out within their existing windows.

@OmegaDaGrodd -

Anybody who thinks that CM made a billion because of its own merits and not because its part of the MCU and RIGHT BEFORE ENDGAME is delusional. But that goes for all marvel films as well.
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 7/7/2021, 2:32 PM
@HulkisHorny - Captain Marvel was absolutely boosted by being close to Endgame just like Black Widow is being boosted by coming off of the heels of like 7 different Marvel movies BW has appeared in. That doesn't explain why Captain Marvel continued making tons of money after the opening weekend where people found out it had little to no set up for Endgame

The point is that if you replace Captain Marvel with Black Widow in 2019 the studio likely makes considerably less money, and people online complain about us getting a movie that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of the Infinity Saga (and they'd be mostly right).

It's not Captain Marvel's fault that her franchise was always going to be bigger than a Black Widow franchise strictly by virtue of her character being a much bigger and more marketable character with way more exciting powers. That's just the way things work

@HulkisHorny -

But money isn’t the point I was making. STORY WISE, it would have made more sense to make BW before her sacrifice in Endgame.

That’s a complete assumption. And you know what happens when you assume...

Considering one of Marvels most beloved films is Winter Soldier...I seriously doubt BW would have made less than a billion considering how similar it is and also if it was placed where CM was in 2019.

@HulkisHorny -

"That’s a complete assumption. And you know what happens when you assume.."

Now I'm confused, just moments ago you said this:

"Anybody who thinks that CM made a billion because of its own merits and not because its part of the MCU and RIGHT BEFORE ENDGAME is delusional"

....but the idea that Captain Marvel didn't make a billion of it's own merits is.....a complete assumption, and it's just as much an assumption as it is to say that Black Widow would've made a billion dollars in 2019 based on the fact it was compared to The Winter Soldier, a movie that came out in 2014 and didn't even sniff a billion dollars.

Of course, these are all assumptions, it's just that some of them are far more realistic than others. If you take it as near fact that Captain Marvel made a billion largely because people cared about what her character would resolve the biggest cliffhanger of all time in Endgame, you're acknowledging that far less people would be interested in a Black Widow movie released at the same time, because everyone already saw what Black Widow would do in Infinity War, which was virtually nothing

Again, the idea that people fresh off of Infinity War would be more interested in Black Widow's Russian family than they were the origin of the Super powered lady that was going to save the universe is kinda delusional

I will say though that Black Widow should've come out before Infinity War because it chronologically happens before it, but bumping Captain Marvel makes no sense because she saves the Avengers asses like 3 times in Endgame, so BW's best place was to come out in 2016, as I noted

@HulkisHorny - most fans didn't want a BW movie prior to her sacrifice in Endgame... There were plans for a BW movie a long time ago that went no where due to just that. It simply didn't have the audience initially... and it can be said a little depth to her character in CATWS and CW is what drove her demand... by then the other pins were already lined up (IW, EG) and they didn't have immediate room for her story.

Saw this today. Incredibly underwhelming and suffers from all the issues of an ‘interquel’ you’d expect. A weak start to phase 4, weaker after thirteen months of delays.

Way to popular for me to be interested in it. I'll wait for the next DC movie. I prefer to watch movies nobody wants to see.
