Blue Beetle entered development long before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of the newly implemented DC Studios, but all signs point to Jaime Reyes' first big-screen adventure being viewed as more than just a "leftover" from the previous era of DC-based content.
The fact that the project was originally going to debut on HBO Max before receiving a theatrical release would seem to indicate that the studio has at least some confidence that it will perform well at the box office, and if it is a success, star Xolo Maridueña believes that sequels and/or crossovers are a definite possibility.
“If we get one movie or a trilogy and f*cking fold this into the Justice League sh*t, we’re ready for the whole nine,” he tells Empire. “For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.”

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."
"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."
The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
