BLUE BEETLE Star Xolo Maridueña Is Hopeful For DCU Sequels & Crossovers; New Image Released

Blue Beetle entered development long before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of the newly implemented DC Studios, but all signs point to Jaime Reyes' first big-screen adventure being viewed as more than just a "leftover" from the previous era of DC-based content.

The fact that the project was originally going to debut on HBO Max before receiving a theatrical release would seem to indicate that the studio has at least some confidence that it will perform well at the box office, and if it is a success, star Xolo Maridueña believes that sequels and/or crossovers are a definite possibility.

“If we get one movie or a trilogy and f*cking fold this into the Justice League sh*t, we’re ready for the whole nine,” he tells Empire. “For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.”

Check out a new image of Reyes in his Scarab armor below.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

It's good to be optimistic, but dude's getting a little ahead of himself here.
This movie will be lucky to take in $300 million worldwide.

@TheWalkingCuban - Yeah.
I can't see it making much more than Shazam 2 did and with a $180 million dollar budget, that's a flop no matter how they try to spin it.

@Feralwookiee -

so ... if the movies has a $120 million budget
how much does it have to make at the BO to be considered a box office hit ?

@Equivocal - Some estimates have the budget at $120 million, others go up to $180 million.
Generally the formula is budget x 2.5 before you turn a profit.

$120 mil x 2.5 = $300 million
$180 mil x 2.5 = $450 million.

I don't see this cracking $300 million worldwide.

@IcePyke - Kinda ironic, since I've heard the arguement that the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, was Ditko's direct continuation of Peter Parker's story after he left Amazing Spider-Man over creative differences with Lee.

This looks like a fun movie along the lines of Shazam, but better

I for one at really looking forward to it, it’s the perfect casting

I hope it does well enough that he sticks with the character, wouldn’t mind a trilogy if the storyline is good enough.

I’m more excited for this than DCs other current projects TheyFlash and Aquadude.
I found it funny some people complained about Blue Beetle looking like a woke film in the trailer but they’re ready for a Flash movie with a pedo psycho in the lead.

Just don't shove so much "Connectivity" Easter Eggs in there, and tell a good story! Once that's set and done, and we have got know the character, then fold him into the "Connectivity" shit! There was just too much of that in the Snyderverse, but no one knew those characters enough to care! Superman dying in the second movie? From a Lord of the Rings monster they named Doomsday? [frick]ing Stupid! Gawwww...

I'm looking ahead to Peacemaker season 2

Peacemaker: Season 2

Der Fledermaus recruits like-minded villains to overthrow the US government. Peacemaker, once again partnering with Eagly and Vigilante, gathers the only people, known criminals, he has access to without the connections of Amanda Waller. He does so with the aid of Marlene the lunch lady, who acts as his messenger and assists in their breakouts. Waller, for her efforts, tails Peacemaker while he goes after Fledermaus.

Peacemaker's team is backed by Waller's former staff from season 1

Vigilante- The self-appointed second-in-command

Eagly- the one Peacemaker appoints as number 2

Thorn- *if CW insisted on doing more DC properties, I'd suggest an Alan Scott/Sentinel show where Thorn would play an intricate part as a love interest of sorts, a parliament of the green, a daughter to Rupert Thorne, a descendant of Blackbriar Thorn(e), and a character with whom we empathize greatly. Here, in Peacemaker, she's just nuts. Of course, this show will laugh and cry with these characters with the same balance of season 1.

Catman- has an obsession to be perfect and fights his eating disorder. A prominent character in the Sentinel show mentioned above where he goes from villain to anti-hero and shocks viewers early on as it's revealed he is the absentee brother to a main character in Sentinel's team, Lady Blackhawk.

Giganta- Her growth (and size reduction) is uncontrollable leading to many gags but also developing a softer side to her as we see her self esteem go from worse to better.

Kite Man- Have kite, is man; hell yeah!

Plastic Man- The most together of the team. He picks on the others and is a constant thief. He's the one we're supposed to love the most if no one else steals the show.

The Cavalier- More Zorro than a large-brimmed hat-wearing "Arrrr yee matey" type. He's oddly charming and the others are confused by how well he wins them over.

Wonder Twins- The absolute outcasts. Just completely dump on them until it's realized at the end that everything we thought was incorrect and they turn out powerful and far less strange.

AKKsis of AmeriKa
After the apparent death of Chris' brother, Keith Smith, a group was formed without the knowledge of the White Dragon because many thought his affection for Keith was a weakness. Members were able to save young Keith in secrecy and raised him without nurture, affection, and bonds.

Der Fledermaus- Only spotted a few times as a youth, having to avoid being recruited, and found out, by White Dragon, he is, in fact, Keith. This is a big reveal late in the season.

Count Vertigo- Vertigo has aligned himself with the take-over because he has been promised that his country, under his thumb, will gain power within this New World Order. (King Snake, who could be used similarly, like several Batman characters, is withheld as I assume they will, or could, be used in with Batman properties)

Lady Vic- The noble nature of Vic is just as important to the premise as Vertigo's. The 2 are snobbish aristocrats who see themselves as better than the others and aren't Nazi sympathizers as much as they are self serving.

Cheshire- Strangely, she has vowed to help Fledermaus. As the only non-white member, she isn't treated well but claims to believe in the cause and wishes to reap the benefits. The late teens-to young adult, in truth, is the bastard child of Keith as a result of the rape and, later, murder, of her mother. She was thought to have been killed as well but her life was mysteriously spared by the assassin. Her mission is to kill her father when the time is right. This also means she is the niece of Peacemaker. She needs that mask; I love that mask.

Clayface- He is the shape-shifting or device that will take the form of the president and usher in the NWO on Fledermaus' orders. I often re-imagine Karlo, as being tied somehow to actor Simon Trent and or the Gray Ghost theatrical persona. For this purpose, the identity is far less important; the ability is what sells his presence. I definitely would avoid the effeminate personality popularized in HQ and just stick to general bad guy until he feels used in order to add depth.

Baron Blitzkrieg- another member on who experiments were performed, only with Baron, it was a physical alteration versus the mental alteration Fledermaus underwent. He's quite happy with his position within the organization and is a dutiful agent. He is, by far, the most underdeveloped character.

Killer Wasp- a one-off villain in my proposed Sentinel show that helps dive deeper into another team member, though, here, as the childhood friend of Fledermaus; he is to Fledermaus what Vigilante is to Smith. He killed his father and several other "boomers" at the behest of Fledermaus if they resisted his leader's bloody takeover.

Double Dare- 2 seductive circus performers who find themselves unwavering in their attraction to Fledermaus. It's the most blatant "wet-dream" of boys because it's so wrong and should lean into uncomfortably aggravating that it airs. The real hate these two conjure should melt into the characters. It's everything wrong with the way women are treated, seen, cast, to the point where their personalities aren't defined at all.

Waller's team
Scandal Savage- Replacing Shiva because Shiva needs to be in the DCGunnU and taken seriously, Savage takes on the Femme Fatale leader role.

The Hook- Replacing David Cain because he should be in any DCGU movie that introduces Shiva and/or Cassandra, Hook is such a cool character that fits the serious side of the very fun Peacemaker show and receives the proper introduction here.

Arsenal- As much as I love the first 2 or 3 seasons of Young Justice, the absolute 3 best things to come from it was Cheshire, Roy Harper, and Sportsmaster. If there's no room for a movie starring Arsenal (I want that as much as I wasn't an Icon movie and more than I was another Superman or Batman), then he deserves some love. He's definitely the one we love on this team. Also, if I'm going to have Cheshire, I think Arsenal is going to add something even more to that story and prove he's one of the best (anti) heroes on the show

Red X- Having never watched Teen Titans, I found out about Red X much later and did some digging on who I thought it was. I determined it was most likely Shrike while discrediting several others. Using the character here, I tied it to Peacemaker season 1. Stay with me, Jimmy Leong, alias Stuff, the Chinatown Kid, made his first appearance (in the comics) as a sidekick to (the original) Vigilante (in 1942). We know that the Peacemaker Judomaster is very different from the comics so (and this is a big), what if Jimmy, sidekick to the original Vigilante, killed the original Judomaster and took on said lineage after he wrongly believed the original Judomaster killed the original Vigilante? Now, with Jimmy (our season 1 Judomaster) missing, either captured, dead, or on the run, his brother, Victor Leong (who, in the comics, became the second Chinatown Kid), takes the Red X moniker and works voluntarily for Waller in order to kill Peacemaker and Vigilante.

Lock-up- A fun character to oppose and conflict with everyone and taking on that enforcer role Katanna and Peacemaker took.

Bolt- I'm surprised he wasn't already a part of the DCEU Suicide Squad. That being said, he was lumped in, along with PM , in the 2021 comics and that's even more of a reason to have him. He's a deadly character that's not well known, but should be soon. He seems to lay low in the hierarchy of the team but gets down and dirty when the action begins.

Copperhead- The slithery contortionist is the black sheep of the group, creeping the others out at every turn.

Black Spider- He's an elite assassin with incredible hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship skills with only one small problem; he's an unabashed Peacemaker fanboy.

Sportsmaster- I'm not going to give up on shoehorning him into any DC property I can imagine until I see what YJ gave us. In my *yawn~here we go again* CW Sentinel pitch he understandably plays a large part (as an original enemy to Scott) even taking on a version of the Made of Wood Killer after putting an end to a copycat Sportsmaster. Ah yes, this is Crusher; the only Sportsmaster, imo. He's the guy that thinks he should run the team and he's the guy that thinks he has Peacemaker's number even though others on this show are trained like (something straight out of a comic book). Ironically, he is a perfect match for Smith, who is more akin to John McClane than Bruce Wayne.

Cannon- Years ago, Henry Cannon was quickly beaten by Peacemaker and Vigalante and apprehended thereafter. While imprisoned, he dedicated himself to perfecting his prowess (Cape Fear) so that he can one day kill the duo. By Waller, he has been given that chance. He has a one-track mind until we learn that, also imprisoned, is his soulmate to whom he intends to return after his goal is completed, adding another layer to the assassin.

Pre-emptively feeling bad for Cobra Kai Kid - this is going to gut his career.

At least he can have two different tables at the Boise ComiCon in 2048 and a twofer with Cobra Beetle pics to sign.
