BLUE BEETLE: Warner Bros. Claims Storm Hilary Had "Significant" Impact On Domestic Box Office

Blue Beetle did not have a strong opening weekend (to put it mildly), and Warner Bros. is now claiming that Storm Hilary had a "significant" impact on audience turnout...

As Blue Beetle attempts to weather a metaphorical storm after a disappointing opening weekend at the box office, a literal natural disaster is being blamed for low audience turnout.

In a statement to Exhibitor Relations, Warner Bros. Discovery claimed that Tropical Storm Hilary had a "significant" impact on the DC Comics movie's domestic debut, "particularly in Southern California where the film is over‐indexing."

While some are bound to roll their eyes at this, the storm is likely to have been at least partially responsible for potential cinemagoers staying indoors. Hilary is said to have broken "virtually all rainfall daily records" in LA, resulting in the No. 1 market for Blue Beetle being hit by rain, flooding, mudslides, and rock slides just as the movie made its way into theaters.

Ol' Hilary can't take all of the blame, of course, and it'll be interesting to see if Blue Beetle can rebound from a $25 million bow (including $3.3M from Thursday previews) as it heads towards its second weekend in theaters.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

I don’t think that excuse is going to fly with their production insurance.

I’m sure it did to some degree, but considering that it wasn’t a factor on Friday or Saturday the box office tale was already told by the time it did. But I’ll grant the actual gross came in about $400,000 under the estimated gross, so that could have been the storm.

Is there some sort of tax credit they are trying to get by suggesting that climate change is impacting profits.

They’re basically saying that SoCal is full of Hispanics/Latino people that would’ve gone to see this. Part of that is accurate.

I guess it's got nothing to do with James Gunn announcing a reboot and the fact this looks like a Nickelodeon film? Of course it was the storm.

Well they are not wrong. They are talking about a mammoth movie market with many, many, many Mexican Americans living there. Not to say it would have turned a flop into a hit but it’s easy to believe that it cost them a couple million opening weekend. We’ve seen other real world things affect box office before.

I saw this movie yesterday and thought it was great. The only thing holding it back was the lack of Ted Kord/Blue Beetle in some scenes and a very lackluster antagonist in Victoria Kord (who probably could have been fleshed out with like 1 or 2 new scenes)

All the pieces for an amazing movie are there though. James Gunn should have just moved the release date to properly put it in the new DCU

Also "Chaingun Granny" was pretty humorous and a great character in the film, but WB definitely needed to leave her out of the trailer...

it was groan-inducing when I first saw her in marketing material for the movie and it hugely turned me off of the film, but given the context of the movie, the family stuff actually works really well.

Can't wait for the excuses for Gunns Superman movie underperforming! WB needs to give up on DC.
