BLUE BEETLE Movie Synopsis Teases Jaime Reyes' Transformation Into DC's Newest Superhero

Warner Bros. has released the first plot synopsis for the upcoming Blue Beetle movie, shedding new light on Jaime Reyes becoming the DC Universe's latest superhero. Find more details after the jump...

Blue Beetle was originally going to be one of the lower-budgeted DC movies developed exclusively for HBO Max, joining Batgirl and planned features for characters like Black Canary and Zatanna. Warner Bros. being acquired by Discovery changed everything, though, and it's now going to receive a theatrical release.

Whether Jaime will be among the characters who make the leap into the new DCU is hard to say, though DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn did Tweet out the first poster on his social media channels.

Xolo Mariduena and Susan Sarandon lead the Blue Beetle cast, and we now have a synopsis. Shared by Warner Bros. in its 2023 slate preview, there's a lot here for comic book fans to be excited about. Alas, there's no mention of the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord!

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," it begins.

"As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers," the description concludes, "forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

We're excited about this one, and hope the first trailer will at least be released in time for Shazam! Fury of the Gods' arrival in theaters next March (if not sooner). Set photos showcasing Blue Beetle's costume have been well-received by fans but it's bound to look even better on screen.

Joining Maridueña, Sarandon, and Guillén in the movie are Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

I don't know why I assumed he was playing a teenager.

College grad? Really wish they at least started with him as a high school senior.

I'm torn on this. I really like Xolo Mariduena. He's one of the best parts on Cobra Kai, a show jam packed full of "best parts" and talent.

But I'll always have a real soft spot for Ted Kord. He was the Blue Beetle I grew up with and really know. I never liked this more technological version of Blue Beetle.

@CorndogBurglar - he’s one the best characters in that show. And I’ll say it, he’s the best student combatant in Cobra Kai. Sorry Robbie

With the state of DC, my mind immediately finished the title after ''BLUE BEETLE Movie...'' with cancelled. Glad that isn't the case.

Anyway, I'm glad he's of college grad age. Don't really like it when they get people in their 20s playing teenagers. At one point it just becomes too obvious.

I'm really looking forward to this film. Xolo is a great actor and he's definitely gonna do Jamie Reyes justice. But I really hope the possible success of this film could lead into a stoner buddy cop comedy in the style of Bill and Ted featuring Ted Kord's BB and Booster Gold just f-ing up the timeline and being total bros who only have a little bit of sexual tension between them.

Honestly my casting for Ted and Michael have to be Elliot Page and David Castañeda, you could throw in other characters as cameos or supporting characters like Fire and Ice, Jonah Hex, ect.

@FilmGuy7878 - I can get with Castañeda but not Page give me Alan Ritchson

@FilmGuy7878 - Cause I casted Page as Ted and Castañeda as Booster idk if I made that clear or not lol.

@FilmGuy7878 - As Booster, Castañeda would be a good Ted

Not knowing the character well, he looks and sounds like half-Iron Man, half-Venom.

I know it's Blue Beetles backstory... but with no context, this just sounds like the 1997 movie, Star Kid... And boy was that a bad movie!
