BOX OFFICE: RIO 2 Set To Steal Top Spot From CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

After having the highest April opening of all-time, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will drop down to #2 this weekend due to the release of animated movie, Rio 2. However, it's still going to be a VERY good weekend for the Marvel Studios sequel! Read on for details...

After a record-breaking debut last weekend, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to drop down to second place due to the release of animated movie Rio 2. In 2011, the first movie opened to $39.2 million and went on to gross $484.6 million worldwide, so a strong start for the follow-up isn't really a surprise. The Marvel Studios sequel won't suffer too much though, as it's still expected to earn between $35 - 40 million. Rio 2 meanwhile is set for $40 - 42 million, so there's a very slim chance that Captain America: The Winter Soldier could still beat it to the top spot. Basically, go and see it another dozen times this weekend! We'll be sure to keep you updated.

That means $39.9 million for Captain America TWS.

P.S.

However, Cap has gotten great WOM as opposed to both IM3 and TDW.

If it can get at least $43-$44 million, it would make for some great legs!

its not disney's captain America... there is no Disney Logo in there film... Also this is easily the beset CBM sense the Avengers(if not better than the avengers)

When I saw Winter Soldier, I sat behind a 10-year-old and his mid-30's father. The kid was actually pretty well-behaved, but it was obvious that he got bored. At one point he whispered to his dad: "This is a really long movie, isn't it?"

Kids don't like political thrillers, no matter how good and no matter how colorful you make the costumes.

best* also, rio 2 looks really bad.... I didn't see the first but still, it looks like it has no storyline. But how would I know? Doesn't matter though its a family movie and will make tons.

Like I said, the kid was well-behaved. In my opinion, there was no harm in it (if you don't have a problem with your kid seeing like a million people get shot).

@dorsk, I had a quite different experience, there was a little kid in front of me, with his mom and some other lady, he cept talking during the movie about bucky. Trying to explain the movie to his mom (who obviously had no clue who the characters were past captain america) ended up getting very annoyed of the kid actually. But its just a different kind of movie. Kids who love superheroes will love the movie, kids who don't care about superheros won't care about the movie.

@dork yeah no I don't see any harm. But I just say I wouoldn't let my kids see a movie with tons of swearing(ok not to much) and people getting shot left and right. not to mention there were a couple other scenes that were pretty graphic, like sitwell getting thrown into a semi

i had an inkling that rio 2 might take the box office,i would have loved cap to take the box office for the entire month of april until spidey came out,i thought that transcendence was caps only big competition this month but guess not

@AlexanderLykins Whenever someone says "I would never let my kids.." , they are full of it and never had kids.

All I'm saying is during the time where our generation was watching Lion King, and Toy Story, we were also watching crap like Batman & Robin, along with Flubber starring Robin Williams.
