Captain America: TFA Scribes Reassure the Sequel Occurs "Primarily" in Present-day!

Further promoting the DVD and Blu-ray release of Captain America: The First Avenger, screenwriters Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely open up a bit on the sequel! Check it out!

Learning yesterday from the screenwriters that an outline for the sequel to Marvel's Joe Johnston-directed Captain America: The First Avenger movie has been submitted, and that the villain was gonna be "crazy," according to 'Dum Dum Dugan' actor Neal Mcdonough, the following news should come as no surprise. Anyhow, chatting with TheHDRoom, scribes Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely ressured the sequel takes place in modern times, primarily.

SM - "I think it's safe for us to say that it's primarily set in the modern day. That seems to have been the biggest question people have been wondering about regarding the sequel. Most people know the story of Captain America as the story of this man out of time, and because The Avengers is such a big movie, and because [Avengers director] Joss Whedon has so many moving pieces, we've been left with room to explore Cap entering the modern day wondering, "What is all this? What's happened to the world" and so on."

CM - "We made a movie where the world was in context for Steve Rogers. It was a movie where it was a more pure time, where there were clearly black-and-white, right-and-wrong, good-and-evil scenarios. And Cap is a guy who symbolizes that. Now he's in the now, and there is nothing black-and-white. So what do you do with that guy? How does he react to a much more uncertain time? So you're given this huge new palate to work with, but you can keep him the same."

From what we know about The Avengers so far, I think it's safe to say the Captain America sequel could explore the fact that everyone he knows from the WW2 era aren't exactly dead; like Steve Rogers thinks in The Avengers. Whether those people are the Howling Commandos, or the more likely elderly Peggy Carter, and Bucky as the Winter Soldier. What do you think?

Captain America: The First Avenger focuses on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving, the film hits shelves on Dvd and blu-ray October 25, 2011.

Dumb. It would be much more interesting imo, if they set half of the movie in modern times, half during those 'montage' years of WWII, in a storyline that connects even after 70+ years. Cap's demons coming back to haunt him!

Besides, it's pretty f'ing obvious that they're going the Winter Soldier route - being that Bucky's character experienced the classic 'he died, but we didn't actually see him die, so he's not actually dead' scenarios.

I think it would be cool to also introduce Falcon into the story.

It only makes common sense to set the sequel in modern times. Prequels are a waste of time as it should've been part 1 in the first place. Good news good news.

Painted themselves into a corner, so it's the only way they can do it without a ridiculous time-travel plot. Caps golden age of adventures is the casualty.

One cool thing comes out of this though; a cinematic world similar to the MARVEL comics universe. No where near as big, but hundreds of characters exist somewhere on earth or on another planet now they have brought these characters together.

Black Panther or go home.

I would love to see Cap's sequel in modern times but flash back to WWII periodically. A lot happened in that 3 year "montage" and that would be cool to see. A sequel in all of either would be dumb. All modern day, I would be wondering "What else did Cap do in WWII?" and all 40's wouldn't have any suspense because in the end of it all you know he ends up frozen.

@gost, Falcon would be cool too. Need sum black superheroes (BLACK PANTHER MOVIE, U HEARD ME MARVEL!) I also wanna see AIM and Baron Zemo. I think MODOK would be too goofy looking unless they changed his appearance radically.

This is great from a storytelling perspective...apart from whatever villain there is, there's a HUGE palette regarding Steve in a world where his generation's old-school morals and values are at odds with the present world. Maybe by the time this comes out, Marvel might have some other allies for Steve to team-up with like the Falcon. As far as modern day enemies, I wouldn't mind seeing the Red Skull return as a neo-nazi who's expanded his role as a covert world terrorist with AIM as his version of Al-Queida. STeve's been asleep thru the Kennedy Assassination, The 60's, Watergate, 9/11, and most of all, The ALF TV series. He's got a lot on his plate to deal with, and I hope Cap2 explores that.

If Hugo Weaving still doesn't mind a second go, Red Skull in modern age.

If not, someone else as Baron Zemo. Might I suggest Mark Strong as Zemo.

I like the idea of parallel flashbacks, LOST-style. Cap fighting the same villain in both eras, and one outcome in the past story explaining / affecting something in the present. It would be interesting to compare and contrast Cap's actions across time.

And come on, any sequel with too little Hayley Atwell would just be a shame.

It would have been cool to have flash backs of his past that leads to a problem that he has to resolve in the present, but it's all good.
