Captain America: The First Avenger Unlikely To Hit The #1 Spot At The US Box Office?

Recent estimates now have Captain America: The First Avenger on course to make as much as THOR and X-Men: First Class, but it's still unlikely to topple Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2...

Tomorrow, and over the weekend, Captain America: The First Avenger will face off against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in an effort to reach the top of the US box office. However, recent reports and speculation seem to indicate that the latest movie from Marvel Studios won't be able to knock the boy wizard from the #1 position.

According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, Captain America is likely to draw in anything between $57 and $70 million, an undoubtedly fantastic result easily up there with THOR and X-Men: First Class. On any other weekend, the super soldier would surely storm right to the top, but here's the bad news. Even with a 50% - 60% drop in ticket sales, Harry Potter would still make up to $84 million more in the US alone, meaning it will have no trouble holding on to the #1 spot.

Of course, not being at the top against such a huge movie doesn't spell certain doom for Captain America's box office chances! As I've said above, the estimates for the movie are VERY good, and it won't open internationally until next weekend. (while it doesn't hit some countries until as last as October!)

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Sebastian Stan as Bucky
Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter
Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt/Red Skull
Toby Jones as Arnim Zola
Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine
Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips
Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark
Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan
JJ Field as Union Jack
Derek Luke as Gabe Jones
Kenneth Choi as Jim Morita

RELEASE DATE: July 22nd, 2011. (US) July 29th, 2011. (UK)

Of course it was, Potter will probably end up being the highest grossing film of all time, Cap one week later was a TERRIBLE idea. Least us nerds will put it at #2

This is no surprise at all. Potter is great, but I'm still hoping for Cap to be at #1. We'll see.

Someone on here had some concrete facts as to how well Potters Films do the Following Week and it was pretty good. If it goes the way he explained then Cap will be #1.

If you take into consideration the Child Fan base and the reluctant to return Parents, you may have a solid weekend for Cap....

We'll see. I'm assuming Potter Holds but I'm Rooting For Cap!

Potter is going to dip because the fans saw it on opening day and this week it will fall. Word of mouth will help this out

would of been better to release the film on july 4th.

but any film released within the first two weekes of harry potter release would find it hard to compete with potter.

Who cares if they are both good movies. Yeah, I like it when something I like is number 1, but that is far more important to me in football (American, just to be clear) than it is in movies. (Although I do like it when Gryfindor beats Slytherin).

If Harry Potter came out a couple weeks ago, then yeah maybe, but since HP is only a week old I highly doubt it.

I predict that this is what will happen to Spiderman...
It'll get squished by the Avengers and TDKR.
It's nevee good to be sandwhiched between two summer juggernauts
Remember 2008? Yeah Iron Man and TDK squished the incredible hulk

I never pay attention to box office projections. Just like many here offer up opinions on movies before they've been released -- hell, most of the time before they've even been made -- it's all guess work and conjecture.

No one will ever know how much CA:TFA will make, until it's made it. But I can guarantee you it'll make at least seven dollars and fifty cents tomorrow, because that's how much my ticket's going to cost.

I think at least for this week and the next Harry Potter will continue to reign supreme. Though I think Captain America won't have much problem settling into position number two until most of everyone that wants to see Harry Potter one or twice has done so. I just saw Harry Potter a couple of days ago and I got to say that it definitely deserves to be number one for however long it does. I'm sure Cap will be good, but my goodness was Harry Potter a great movie and bookend to a franchise.

Gonna go see Cap tonight, hope it's good.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's not number 1 at the B.O. though. It's the last Harry Potter film. People will be seeing it more than once.

Yea, why didn't they release it July 4th? It would have been a nice little tie in. Yea, Harry is going to knock Avatar off the top, or at least Titanic.

Marvel's got to be so pissed off at themselves for not releasing Cap on Thor's release date instead.
