Tomorrow, and over the weekend, Captain America: The First Avenger will face off against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in an effort to reach the top of the US box office. However, recent reports and speculation seem to indicate that the latest movie from Marvel Studios won't be able to knock the boy wizard from the #1 position.
According to
BoxOfficeMojo.com,
Captain America is likely to draw in anything between $57 and $70 million, an undoubtedly fantastic result easily up there with
THOR and
X-Men: First Class. On any other weekend, the super soldier would surely storm right to the top, but here's the bad news. Even with a 50% - 60% drop in ticket sales,
Harry Potter would still make up to $84 million more in the US alone, meaning it will have no trouble holding on to the #1 spot.
Of course, not being at the top against such a huge movie doesn't spell certain doom for
Captain America's box office chances! As I've said above, the estimates for the movie are VERY good, and it won't open internationally until next weekend. (while it doesn't hit some countries until as last as October!)
