Marvel has found the actress who will play Captain America's love interest in Joe Johnston's big screen adaptation!

Hayley Atwell Confirmed as Peggy Carter in Marvel Studios’
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Marvel Studios announced today that Hayley Atwell has been cast to star as Peggy Carter in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans. In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America while they fought together in the war effort. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Atwell will next be seen in PILLARS OF THE EARTH, the 8-part miniseries premiering July 23 on Starz and the TV series THE PRISONER. Her film credits include THE DUCHESS, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED and CASSANDRA’S DREAM.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Atwell is represented by CAA and United Agents.

Seriously though, I'm not familiar with her past work (although I plan on watching The Prisoner when it starts here in the UK next week!) but I wish her all the best!

Will she play Sharon Carter in the next Cap movies set in the present though? It's possible as they both look identical in the comic books!

I guess I am familiar with her being I watched The Prisoner. She is more the "girl next door" look than the "hottie" look, which is okay for playing in a WWII fighting role. Seems to be a solid actress from what I remember.

joe johnston is a liar he said he would cast an unknown for cap and surround that person with know actors.

-he casted a semi known actor for cap
-he casted a nobody for bucky (a few apperances in GG and Kings)
-he casted a nobody for peggy carter
-he casted a semi known actor for Red Skull

this is a horrible cast, I hate unknows. I would have prefered at least semi know actors.

She plays Kiera Knightly's best friend/successor in THE DUTCHESS. She's great in it, so this is good news. She worked quite well in that period piece - she should have no problem bringing her talent to this one.

@Wolvie09 I did a little online research on her when I found out she was on the running. She'll do great. Shes been in a lot of period films.

I hope she isn't the only female in the film, cause I really wanted a known actress, to match with Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman.

Somebody from the film did say the cast would be surrounded with knowns, but that was said when it was said to be an unknown for the cap role.

DOGS: Have no fear, I'll be doing my best to see this movie being filmed! I have a feeling they'll be heading to Wales to film a lot of The First Avenger..! It's cheap, lol, and has a lot of locations that could easily pass for a WWII setting! I know they recently filmed a lot of the new Robin Hood movie here anyway!

@MarvelFreshman: I have no problem with the actors in this film.I mean look at Evans all bulked up for the role and Stan will be a good Bucky.My only problem is Johnston...I just don't think he is the right guy to direct this...But I hope I am wrong...

@Wolvie09 I think Johnston's capability of making period pieces got him the job. But Marvel has been with him since last year, so I'm sure they know they can trust him to deliver, cause they would usually get rid of a director if he wasn't bringing it, like they did with Thor.

josh@ lol me to man and ah kick ass well i really liked it tho a lot of people i know who loved the comic disliked it for different reasons, which made next to no sense to me????

and the avengers news, well im happy, i mean i liked angel, firefly and serenity and yes he's only directed 1 movie but with faverau and co behind him i think he could do it justice but he wouldn't of been my 1st pick as director tho.
