Russo Brothers Dish On CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Deleted Scenes

Describing one of Scarlett Johansson’s great scenes that she, herself, recommended be cut, the Russo bros discuss Captain America: The Winter Soldier deleted scenes. Also check out behind-the scenes pics!

During Colliders lengthy chat with Joe and Anthony Russo, among things the sibling directors discussed were Captain America: The Winter Soldier scenes left on the cutting room floor. Revealing that there are about 5 of them thatll feature on the DVD/Blu-ray, Joe Russo described one particular scene with high praise. There's a great scene that got cut thats like master class in acting between Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson that took place near the end of the second act,” reveals the co-director. Its when they find Fury in the Bunker. Natasha takes issue with the fact that Fury did not let her in on the fact that he was still alive; she actually believed he was dead. Its a nice reflective moment for her where she goes Oh my God, this is the world I invited myself to? Fury says, I had to keep the circle small. Short scene, but its a great one. Joe Russo went on to explain that it was actually Scarlett Johansson who suggested the scene be taken out:  After she saw the movie, and loved it, she goes: It just seems there was a bit of a drag in that section. This is crazy for me to recommend, but do we really need that scene between me and Sam? Is there really narrative content in that scene? You could still get the arc out of my character without it. So, she actually recommended cutting her own scene.

For the full video interview, where the Russos explain logic behind Nick Furys eye scanner, Arnim Zola, and more, make the jump to Collider. What do you think?

I think more breaks from all out action would have helped.

To me, Robert Redford's character was allowed more actual acting time and development than anyone else's.

@BatManiac She was in 90% of the movie, at the very least. Cutting five or even ten minutes worth of screen time isn't that big of a loss for her in TWS.

I heard like there was only 7 minutes of the movie that got cut out...... Not bad!!!

But yeah I would've like that scene to be in the movie, it would open more doors on black widow and nick fury's relationship

But pretty long action scenes

I was pleased with how much action it had

I too enjoy small character moments (I felt they were lacking that in TWS).

After watching it three times, I'm 90% sure that Danny Pudi had a line that got cut when Cap took over the communications room. Ir was probably something like: "I'm actually a huge fan" or something nerdy/funny/slightly fourth-wall breaking. If so, I'm glad it got cut, but as a Community fan, I'd still like to see it.

i have only seen it once,i do plan on seeing it again this weekend but the pacing worked for me,i was engaged throughout the film,plus having only 5-7 minutes cut from a 2 hr and 16 min film is pretty darn amazing, i do wish this would have been in it,it does give a little more to black widows arc but it works fine without it imo

Now that is a good actress - rather than try to cram in more scenes of herself she actually thinks about the movie and questions the director as to whether the scene fits.

@DrDoom
Depends when it takes place in the film - the scene with Nick Fury for example was the scene where it dragged in the 'middle?' for me - this would have put an extra few minutes onto that. We'll probably see it as a deleted scene any who :3

Nice to know that these actors care about their roles and are listened by directors etc. Maybe Evans will remind Whedon to keep Cap this Bad ass ;)

This movie is so good. Thry really nailed it all the way .... Thanks

@Jwe75

After seeing Winter Soldier, I'm actually very worried about what Whedon will do with Cap. (Based on Avengers) he doesn't seem to really dig the character or respect his skills.

I had similar problems with his writing of X-Men comics. It seems Joss plays favorites with ensembles...

Danny Pudi's cameo made me shriek with excitement in the middle of a crowded theater. It's a shame that only a few people got it though

@dorsk188

Some characters will always draw the short straw in ensembles. As you say, it can be the result of a writer/director playing favourites, but much of it has to do with the story, and letting it be told as naturally as possible.

I hope Cap gets more attention in AoU, and that Joss had plenty of time to ensure that everything about his character (athleticism, attitude, approach to leaership) is carried over from TWS.

The Russo's get Cap to a tee. That was a perfect marriage for his franchise.
