THE MARVELS Last-Minute Cameo Sets Up Formation Of A New Superhero Team - SPOILERS

The Marvels features one pretty big cameo that was spoiled in the trailers (Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie), but another character drops by for a last-minute surprise appearance right before the credits roll, and their involvement seems to be setting up the eventual formation of a brand-new superhero team in the MCU.

Major spoilers ahead.

When the three heroes defeat Dar-Benn and save the day, Monica is left trapped in an alternate universe (more on that later), while Carol uses her powers to recharge the Kree homeworld, and Kamala seemingly sets her sights on forming her own squad of heroes.

In a callback to Nick Fury's early recruitment days, we see Kate Bishop, aka the new Hawkeye (Hailee Steinfeld), walk through her door to find Ms. Marvel waiting in the shadows. She asks Kate if she thought she was "the only teenage superhero" around, to which Clint Barton's protégé replies, "I'm 23."

Khan then says she's putting a team together, and wants Kate on it... "please!"

This would obviously seem to confirm that the Young Avengers will assemble in the MCU at some point (though they may go by another name). In addition to Khan and Bishop, the line-up is rumored to include America Chavez, Billy Kaplan/Wiccan, Cassie Lang/Stature, and Riri Williams/Ironheart.

We're not sure if Ms. Marvel will continue to recruit the other members or this was simply to give her a fun Nick Fury moment, but the older, (slightly) more experienced Hawkeye would arguably make for a better leader.

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

I'd like to remind you we as of yet still don't know who the main avengers are for the multiverse saga. And they're setting up the f@#$ing young avengers now.

SonOfAGif - 11/10/2023, 4:46 PM
@Origame - The Avengers as a unit/team are no more. This has been established in every post Endgame entry. The Sokovia Accords have also been abolished. While the term "Avenger" is still used. They're basically Firefighters scattered across the United States with no Fire Station or Chief to report to.

@SonOfAGif - Yeah, but there will 100% be another team of Avengers.
Origame
Origame - 11/10/2023, 5:22 PM
@SonOfAGif - ...so those two avengers movies are just gonna be about a bunch of random people scattered across the country with nothing leading them?

Besides, the concept of main avengers has always been short hand for the main characters of the series. We knew the infinity saga specifically focused on the 6 avengers, particularly iron man, captain america, and Thor.

We don't have that yet. Closest is maybe loki, but his overall role in the story is still up in the air. Is he a main character? A supporting one? A villain?

@Origame - We still haven't seen result of Thanos attack on Nova planet after infinity war. Then we have tiamut emergence, pip and starfox, blade, black knight and many more we still haven't seen back yet.

Even if they go with this, this is going to take at least 7-10 years.

@Origame - I think that's what the premise of Kang Dynasty will be about. Scattered Avengers being picked off one by one because they no longer operate as a team. And Loki witnesses the universes falling to the Kang variants and begins to search for the prime version of various heroes to build a team of Multiversal Avengers to battle in the war. But he realizes that He Who Remains was right and a Multiversal War leads to the destruction and deaths of trillions. So he merges the Multiverse into one Singular Universe and forces the Kang Variants to battle the hero variants in Battleworld.

@SonOfAGif - "no longer operate as a team"

But that's the problem. There is no team. By your own admission. And again, there's no sense of any main character of the multiverse saga.

@Origame - who was the main character of the Infinity Stones saga?
Origame
Origame - 11/11/2023, 7:14 AM
@Slotherin - ...the avengers. Particularly iron man, captain america, and Thor. We know this through the team ups that served as the focal point of each phase and is where the conflict both came together and resolved
Slotherin
Slotherin - 11/11/2023, 7:36 AM
@Origame - touché. I interpreted that in a singular character way as initially stated.

Yeah, this current slate definitely appears to lack that though I'd guess this is one way to attempt to remedy that.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 11/11/2023, 9:09 AM
@Origame - How is that a problem? The entire premise of The Avengers was the characters being forced to work as a team because Nick Fury put them together. The same will most likely apply in The Kang Dynasty when Loki puts the next team together.
Origame
Origame - 11/11/2023, 9:29 AM
@SonOfAGif -...you don't see a problem when we don't even know who those main avengers are for what's now longer than the entire infinity saga?

They made it clear the main players in the FIRST PHASE of the infinity saga. And we still don't know who for the multiverse saga.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 11/11/2023, 1:35 PM
@Origame - They made it clear that Nick Fury was monitoring those heroes specifically. You have Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and more that are being monitored by Loki.
Origame
Origame - 11/11/2023, 1:56 PM
@SonOfAGif - yeah, where are you getting that he's specifically monitoring them?

And considering it took a phase and a half to reveal those were supposedly the main characters, why do you think that's gonna stick?
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 11/11/2023, 1:59 PM
@Origame - He's watching the Multiverse branches and has the TVA hunting down Kang Variants. Who do you think he is going to call when the war begins? Mobius? B-15? No he's going to call the ones who gave Thanos the smoke.
Origame
Origame - 11/11/2023, 2:10 PM
@SonOfAGif - yeah, that doesn't point to Dr strange and spiderman specifically. There were kind of a lot of superheroes there that are still out there. And if the rumors of Deadpool 3 are true then loki and the tva are looking across the multiverse for the team, including characters like Hugh Jackman wolverine who hasn't even appeared in the mcu in general, let alone the multiverse saga yet.

Look, it's fine if you like it. But the concept of an interconnected universe telling a long flowing narrative has fallen apart post endgame.

@Doomsday8888 - While I think both the musical planet and the baby flerkin excavation scenes all should have been cut from the script to allow for better character writing, only the musical planet scenes were so terrible it made me embarrassed for the movie. It wasn't even good music or singing. The entire group of scenes on that planet were a consecutive joke that never lands.

I saw almost all of that shit on bootleg;you know what got me? Right after, RIGHT AFTER they escaped off of that planet, right after those Skrulls were killed - this is right after now - Kamala is making jokes, cracking jokes, with the black girl and Ms Marvel, Carol Danvers. They did this same shit at the end of Ragnarok, the movie the majority of y'all mistakenly call good.

A bunch of people die and someone cracks a joke afterwards, someone who was in the [frick]ing final moments of those people's' lives no less. I mean they don't even address the loss of lives and Carol's decision to abandon them afterwards. It's just all glossed over. And I noticed a lot of people aren't talking about when they talk about the millions of things wrong with this movie.

I read this leak back in the summer. Maybe June or July. Sounded cool. But I'll say after just walking out the theater, the scene played out much better in live action than the way it read on a reddit leak

It's the charisma of these newer young actors. Ms marvel was the highlight of the whole film. And Hailee is easily my favorite of the new heroes. Them together (add the new black widow) will be a delight to see. I know everyone wants the A team characters (f4, xmen, OG6 6) . I do too. But they did a wonderful job CASTING the next generation heroes. They are really good actors!

@Vigor - While Ive been lukewarm on the projects from Phases 4/5 and am unsure of how successful a Young Avengers project could be, I’d have to agree for the most part.

Ms Marvel, Hawkeye 2.0, and Yelena are all great. Ironheart didn’t impress much, but we haven’t gotten much from her. Cassie was a bit annoying and America was more Maguffin than character. But they have 3 very charismatic actors to lead the bunch. Just please, if they include Hulkling, change his look!

@MyCoolYoung - So many bad parts of that movie that it’s tough to choose a worst one. But yeah she was insufferable. Easily the least likable of the Young Avengers introduced so far (but Hulkling’s look makes him towards the bottom too).
