COMICS: Artist Jeff Lemire Describes Writing For Certain Marvel Titles As “Kind Of A Nightmare"

Comic book artist Jeff Lemire, who’s currently writing for Image and Dark Horse, was asked about his previous collaboration with Marvel Comics and he definitely didn't seem to joy the overall experience...

Jeff Lemire is a comic book artist and writer who had a chance to work on a plenty of projects, including DC’s Flashpoint, Justice League Dark and Marvel’s All-New Hawkeye and Moon Knight. In an interview with Italian website Fumettologica he was asked about his achievements, current work for Image Comics (Descender, Royal City) and Dark Horse (Black Hammer), but also his memories from the time of being a Marvel Comics employee.

Certain books like Moon Knight total freedom, they never gave me any notes and you can kinda see it in the work, it’s the best thing I did,” the artist said. It’s hard disagree, as Lemire did a great job continuing Warren Ellis’  legendary run. As always, a coin has two sides and Marvel is not an exception from that rule. House of Ideas has interfered in the artist’s vision which is clearly reflected in the rather mixed Extraordinary X-Men reception.

The X-Men stuff was… Kind of a nightmare, to the honest. Really difficult. I came into [it] and they already had storylines in place I had to use that I probably wouldn’t come up with myself, and I felt editorial was very restricting in what they wanted. And too many notes. And then you start second-guessing yourself. It’s just not a good situation. That wasn’t a great experience, but on the flip side, doing Moon Knight was really fun,” Lemire added.

The artist also commented on the chances of seeing his own work on the big screen: “how many movies are made every year and how many of them are actually good? Not many, right? First of all, the chances of getting made are very small and then the chances that it gets made and it’s actually good… It’s almost impossible,” the artist concluded.

Looking at Marvel Studios’ track record, a Moon Knight series seems like a great idea, but as Lemire said, it’s better to not get our hopes up. You can read the full interview HERE.
