Destroyer14's review of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #677

I usually don't put my reviews of The Amazing Spider-Man on the Main page, but I decided to make an exception for this abomination of a comic. Come check out my review of this week's Spidey.

Review Opinion

Spidey and Daredevil have a great history of team-ups. My personal favorite would be their team-up from the 90's show. That was my first ever DVD from that series, and my first glimpse of Daredevil. This comic has been hyped for a bit, Spidey and DD haven't teamed-up in awhile, so this was greatly welcomed. I haven't been too fond of the series lately, but even I was excited at the thought of these two teaming up. So I'm sad to say that this comic was one of the worst issues I've read in years.

I'm not even going to mention the story, about how Spidey thinks Black Cat is not guilty of an incident and goes to Daredevil for help. One thing I hate in comics is when Part One takes place in one series, and then Part Two takes place in another one, forcing the reader to buy an issue from a series he/she might not collect. Dan Slott takes off for this two-part event, in favor of Daredevil writer Mark Waid. My gosh, his portrayal of Spidey is the worst I have ever seen. Annoying and idiotic, it's just sad. When Black Cat shows up, he acts like a desperate fool. What is he, a teenager now? WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?

Daredevil might be the only good thing about this issue. Because everything else is just awful. The art makes Spidey look bad, the eyes on the mask is almost non-existent. This is the worst drawn Spider-Man I have ever seen. Daredevil looks good, I'll give it that. But I cannot get over at how awful Spidey looks. I'll take the cartoony Spider-Island art over this any day. It's just awful, does Marvel want to degrade Spidey? This is just awful. Black Cat is pretty much the same, so no complain there.

Overall, this is not only one of the worst Spidey comics I've ever read, it's one of the worst comics I've bought in years. The story itself is good, but Spidey's portrayal ruins it. I'm almost ashamed to call myself a fan. Like, I go out there and say I'm a huge fan of Spider-Man and that he's a great character, then the person goes into the comic book store, finds this week's issue to see an idiotic guy desperate for love. And no, I will not buy Part Two over at Daredevil. What a bad issue.

2/10.

Well the cover itself is not the best either (where is the perspective? BC could just be lying over DD by the looks of it!! Not a single shadow cast from such a strong light source either.)

Just wondering, I never read the Sinister Six issue. Was that already settled or was it foreshadowing?

I cannot stress enough how much I hate -- hate, hate, hate -- this lame, tired anime/manga-style artwork crap. John Romita Jr on his laziest day is ten times better than this junk.

My favorite Spidey/DD team-up was back in the 80s, during the "Gang War" storyline which ran through a couple of the Spider-Man titles. Come the conclusion Spidey was hot to bring in Kingpin; he found him and started whooping the piss out of him, only for Kingpin to rip off his face, revealing Kingpin to actually be Daredevil in a fat suit, running interference for the police so they could haul Kingpin in before an enraged Spidey could beat him to death. Great story arch, that one and the art, by Ron Frenz and, in the final issue of the arch, by Erik Larsen, was leaps and bounds better than this putrid shit.

I bought an awesome Black Cat print at NYCC. The artist even sent me the digital copy. It 100 times better than this, and I would guarantee that "Tea" would approve it. I just don't know how to post the image.

I didn't hate the issue, I thought it was an interesting read. I found it a bit weird they hammered the whole PETER IS SINGLE AGAIN and BLACK IS THE REBOUND GIRL way too much. I read this issue so I must see how it ends. It will be the only DD comic I will pick up since Shadowland

Destroyer14 I agree, Spidey's series is horrible. Seriously, drop this series. And pick up Captain America, or even Daredevil. I do love DD but I personally prefer Captain America, although get the back issues from 1, it's totally worth it. :) It's kinda like Inception, and it's awesome. Probably the best Marvel title out ATM IMO.

Destoryer14 BTW, I don't think I made that quite clear lol in the above. "although get the back issues from 1, it's totally worth it. :) It's kinda like Inception, and it's awesome. Probably the best Marvel title out ATM IMO." I'm talking about Captain America. Sorry if that wasn't clear... lol.

@otherside....I read a few issues of the new captain america series...its okay....I love the character but to me, I can only read him when he is a part of a team book. I'm on the same boat with Destroyer, I have a loyalty with Spider-man, good or bad, his comics have a charm worth reading. I think this issue could have been better had Slott been attached as writing, he could have balanced the romance aspect of Peter much more better than Waid. We get it, Parker is dumped, he doesn't have to sulk and aim for a rebound, especially with Black Cat, she may have had a thing with him but thats passed. This isn't like Batman and Catwoman who were shown having sex....if they did show Spider-man and Black cat doing that....oh that would bring in the readers.

ComicCritic87 Heh, I understand having loyalty but buying a book with a character is so changed he's not that character anymore isn't loyalty, it's silly. We should get together and boycott Slott comics!

^^^ Well at least Slott SM comics, haven't read any other books of his I don't think.
StuckInPanels
StuckInPanels - 1/13/2012, 6:40 PM
@Otherside....at least Slott seems to be getting tons of freedom to create story telling rather than JMS who got raped every single issue he did by the editors and JQ mandating his wild decree's during that time with the Spider-man comics. Dan Slott has made the Spidey book much more fun and worth reading.

Man, Amazing used to be great, but its gone nowhere. Peter has stopped growing as a character. Everything's a rehash of the old stories. Dan Slott has brought back a vibrancy, but where will Spidey be in a year or two? At least Ultimate has a continuity and has stayed true to the character.

I'm surprised this title still selling at all !!
everything since OMD has gone down the toilet...

@PoPcornDude:

Totally, it's a shame, cuz Amazing is like Marvel's flagship character and title. I honestly wonder where Spider-man will be in the next few years, cuz everything's being recycled. Marvel or Quesada or whoever ran him into the ground with OMD and I don't even connect with the character. Maybe Marvel should reboot like DC and re-esta blish these characters. Hell, a Marvel reboot would probably be bigger and sell more than DC, not to bash DC because I really like their stuff.

@ NoRegrets:
Sorry man, no offense, he has def changed, but overall don't things seem retrograded? I've been collecting Spider-man for years and though he may have a new job, gotten away from his aunt, and is on all these teams, which by the way is a bit over the top, he as a character hasn't grown. All the things you said are true but in the sense of psychological and physical development, he's the same. All these things are happening to him, a whole slew of events are rocking his world and he still hasn't grown. Marvel, with OMD, erased years of continuity in a way and have brought the series backward instead of forward. I will say this though, Slott did do a great job with the death of Jameson's wife and the complications of death in general on Peter. That was definitely character development. But even so, he's kind of the same, right? I mean, he said he wouldn't let anyone die, seemingly changing his attitude toward heroism but hopefully everything's building for this big "ends of the earth" event where he will save the entire planet.
And by the way, I don't think he singlehandedly saved the entire city. If you mean SpiderIsland, didn't Kaine, the Avenegers, Venom and a slew of others help too? And about not having a girlfriend, just remember, he had more than that: he had a wife. The Peter that always got the short end of the stick, the Peter who never fit in, finally got the girl of his dreams and got married. Spider-man's entire continuity has been known for moving the character ahead. From Lee to Stern, writers kept a consistency and Peter finally got married, but they ended that. I think they
re running out of ideas and are trying to keep him young.

Grif: I must take serious issue with you calling this cover art "dogshit". That comparison is a reckless and slanderous assault on the good name of canine defecatory products. An apology is demanded here on behalf of dogs and their physical waste everywhere.

This cover is bad enough to embarrass Liefeld.

Started reading this recently so I don't know all the facts but to me Peter came across as someone on the rebound and found comfort in a familier face. Wether it plays into his character I don't know but it seems natural to try latch onto a hot ex after finishing a relationship.
Overall I'm liking what I'm reading at the moment just hate the almost anime style artwork
